Cable: "We'll see" about Javon Walker

Yes, Javon Walker is still on the Raiders.  No, it doesn’t make any sense to carry an expensive player that didn’t have a single catch last season.

I asked Tom Cable Sunday why Walker couldn’t couldn’t get on the field.  Cable spoke about the emergence of Oakland’s young players at wide receiver.

“Will [Walker] be there next year?  We’ll see,” Cable said.

Logic says Walker will finally get dumped, which will be at least a year too late.  Cable’s words appeared to support that notion, we’ve given up applying logic to Oakland’s personnel decisions.

He is waiting on Al Davis to tell him. The only decision Tom Cable gets to make his who he hits.

Walker is guaranteed something like $2.3 million whether the Raiders keep him or not. It was part of the dramatically reduced contract they worked out with him before last season. They kind of had to do it because if they had just cut him they would’ve taken an enormous cap hit.
Still, they could go ahead and cut him to make room for someone else. Plus assuming he gets picked up for around the league minimum, I assume they could save about 25% of that money.

Yes, Oakland has some outstanding young WRs. DHB was able to amass an incredible 9 receptions for 124 yards in the 11 games he started. This smacks of Cable’s support of Al Davis’ stance that Russell is going to be a great QB.

maybe his revolutionary secret surgery he got in Israel with out telling the Raiders didn’t fix his knee, but keep spouting snide remarks about the Raiders personal decisions.

  6. Mooch says: Feb 28, 2010 4:06 PM

NASTY cap hit if he is realeased, no?
Or does that not matter in the uncapped year – essentially making it one big “Allen Houston NBA Rule” scenario?

  7. INVAIDUH says: Feb 28, 2010 4:07 PM

    should’a been dumped last year.
    it’s the “rumormill”..stop acting like you’ve
    ever applied logic.

Logic? You are as far from that as humanly possible when it comes to the Raiders.
Go break out your box of lame stereotypes from 30 years ago, and give us a doozie about the criminal element or something.

Lot of pettiness and back and forth. This crap went on with Jerry Porter, Dominic Rhodes and other players. They wont play someone, but still pay because they dont want the player lighting them up – or havent got anything from their investment. This covers up the fact they cannot draft very well – however, Louis Murphy showed, maybe the tide is turning. They must stop the internal bickering.

Javon Walker will be a good pickup for someone with a good QB.
Jamarcus Russell is also a great example of why the combine doesnt hold any merit with Qb’s. If you want me watch my game film. Russell is such a loser that I honestly cannot describe how bad he is.

I find it shocking that this asswipe is still on a NFL team. It is clear that he was nothing without Favre throwing to him.

yo tatum32 go back to marcus allen not porter for that talk.

  16. Justin says: Feb 28, 2010 6:34 PM

Big Tex, mentioning one guy in the group with a lackluster year who was yanked before JaMarcus was yanked is not really supporting your cause. I bet you couldn’t name the 2 starters that overtook his spot once he got injured which one of them returned from an injury during pre-season. Those 2 guys showed a lot of promise plus the Raiders have one of the better Tight Ends in the league in Zach Miller.
Yuck it up with the DHB pick but there is some potential with the group.

But what the hell would you know about it?

Please billybengal, do watch your “film”, though I don’t “want you” because of it. Regardless of your grammar level though, I love it when people act like they watch “film”. You stud GM’s and Scouts here commenting on the Florio blogs must like to brag to the rest of us here, seeing as we can only see broadcast games and replays. Maybe an occasional DVR or something, but I just don’t have access to game film like you all do. Please enlighten us with some more insight!!

Can Walker “TAKE A PUNCH”??? With the TALENTED DHB on the roster, I guess that makes Walker expendable? Richard Seymour should be that lucky?

    on the money killerklown.

Never understand why Al Davis went so “BIG” by taking Walker, D. Hall, and G. Wilson all in one year.
PERFECT example that you can’t “buy” a winning team through Free Agency…Teams HAVE to draft well (Look at the 49ers of the 80′s, Bills/Cowboys of the 90s, and lately the Steelers and Patriots (boy does that pain me to say that).
As much as Al loves what Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick are all about, he should have learned from them and traded back as much as he can and stockpile draft picks (like getting an #1 draft pick for a soon to be 30 year old DL who wants a ton of money…Ironic isn’t it?).
You could argue that would give Al more chances to be wrong, but at least he would have spent so damn much money on JR, DHB, D-MAC (on top of the recent FA disasters).
Just sad that he didn’t bite the bullet and let Gruden control the roster and sit back and enjoy the show.

  22. Big Tex says: Feb 28, 2010 10:22 PM

The Raiders leading WR finished tied for 121st (that’s right,121st) in the league in receptions. Chaz fell in the draft because of an injury history and was hurt again last year. JLH has given Oakland 3 years and less than 700 yards. Miller’s alright. He finished 9th among TEs in receptions, but had the lowest percentage of 1st downs of any TE in the top 20. Still an awful lot of holes in that receiving corps. The money wasted on Javon just makes matters worse.

  23. patpatriotagain says: Mar 1, 2010 12:51 AM

walker can’t be that bad. he only had 6 fewer catches than the other high paid receiver heyward-bey.
“And with the first pick in the 2011 draft, The new England patriots (from raiders) select…”

Not just about players…You can have the one of the greatest WR in the game (Randy Moss anyone?), but if your offensive scheme sucks and you drafted high risk/high reward guys (JR, D-MAC, DHB) and NONE of them have panned out, then you are going to be HORRIBLE.
Hopefully Hue Jackson can put an offensive togther that can move the ball on a consistent basis…it isn’t like the Ravens (his old team) had a TON of WR talent.

  25. Big Tex says: Mar 1, 2010 8:55 AM

Redleg, you’re correct in that Hue Jackson needs to improve Oakland’s offense. Obviously, Joe Flacco is better than anyone the Raiders have put out there at QB in quite some time and as to WR, Derrick Mason has what, seven or eight seasons of over 1,000 yards. The Raiders are also severely hampered by a multi season tendency to be unable to stop the run, whch hasn’t exact;y been a problem in Baltimore.

Good point…However I think the inablity of the Raiders to sustain drives and consistantly get in the endzone (especially in the first half of games) is a BIG contributing factor to their poor defense…The Raiders offense since 2002 have had TOO many three and outs and CONSTANTLY put the defense in bad situations. Anyone’s defense will look horrible if the offense can’t move the ball and score.
THAT is where I hope Hue Jackson can install a NFL type caliber of offensive…Not crap that the Raiders have tried to execute since Gruden left.
