Jets announce Jones will be cut on Friday

Contrary — sort of — to the report that the Jets will cut running back Thomas Jones on Monday, the Jets have issued on Monday a statement indicating that he’ll be cut on Friday.

Said G.M. Mike Tannenbaum:  “We have informed Thomas Jones and his representatives that we will release him on March 5.  Thomas joined us three years ago and has been a productive, passionate leader both on and off the field who has served as a positive influence for our younger players.  We were fortunate to acquire Thomas and wish him the best.”

Said coach Rex Ryan:  “When I got here Thomas immediately became one of my guys.  He had one of his best years last season — might have been his best.  I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player and a person.  As I said the other day, this is one of the tough decisions we had to make for our organization.”

Jones was due to earn a roster bonus of $2.8 million next week, and even in an uncapped year the Jets weren’t willing to pay it.  Instead, they’ll turn the running game over to Leon Washington and Shonn Greene.

Jones will become an unrestricted free agent on Friday.  Because he has achieved that status via the termination of his contract, he’ll be free to sign with any team, even the final eight teams from the 2009 season.

  1. I hope Detroit trys to get this guy! Though I would prefer them to grab Chester, TJ would be a great addition!

  2. As I stated earlier… Jones will be missed both on and off the field in NY, but unfortunately TJ wouldn’t restructure his contract and you just can’t spend $5mm (roster bonus + salary) on a 32 year old RB for one season (2010), and then also sign him to a 3-4 year contract extension, worth about $3-4mm p/year, which is what he wants!

  3. Why pay an ordinary RB all that money when you can plug in just about any other RB and get very similar results?

  4. Why? Why give away a guy in a contract year? Pay a little extra in an uncapped season and send him on his way at 33. I hate you Jets.
Leon’s got a bionic leg, and Greene looked so good in the playoffs because he only got a handful of carries during the year. He was fresh.
Bad move. I don’t get it.

  5. Shouldn’t the last sentence say he’s free to sign with even the final seven teams? It wouldn’t make much sense for the Jets to release him and then sign him again.
Sounds like somebody has a case of the Mondays.

  6. Thanks for a few great years TJ, you will be missed…
However, despite his great year, the inability to break tackles and become a true great back was shown greatly this year when Shonn Greene came in and displayed his abilities. I am nervous to not have an experienced veteran, especially with the physical contact Greene will experience, but am confident moving forward – I would hate to see him land in Buf, Mia, or NE

  7. The Jets will never be seen or heard from again.
Ryan will be the next Coach of the Hartford Rectums.

  8. Maybe Thomas will join his brother Julius in Seattle.. Or Detroit will pick him up and won’t use him right, kind of like everyone else on the Lions roster.

  9. Since they cut TJ does that mean that we still can’t sign a free agent being one of the last 8 teams in? And if Rhodes is going to get delt I would loooooooooooove for them to make a shot at Rolle if he gets released

Not unless the Jets are giving him a chance to test the open market, as they did with Brandon Moore last year. If he doesn’t find what he’s looking for in terms of $ and/ or a solid team(s), he can always come back to the Jets and work on a decent deal with the team he’s played for over the past (3) years.
    Doubtful… but still a possibility.

  11. He had the yardage but seemed he go with not a lot of yardage on several runs then break one.
Thought Washington should have carried more than Jones in 2008…..then Jones shot his mouth off about Brett playing badly at the end when he didn’t carry his weight as well. So long….big mouth….

  12. What a stupid move by the Jets. I’m done defending Rex Ryan from the ‘fat’ and ‘arrogance’ jokes that pop up everywhere, including this board. How the hell do you cut a guy that is putting up career numbers? Would be great to see Jones catch on in the AFC East and shove it up New York’s ass, but unfortunately, he doesn’t really fit into the picture in that division anywhere but there.
So… hell, bring him to Denver. We’ve always got room for another RB, and Knowshon will probably be a ‘bust’ anyways.

  13. It is very “Patriot”-like to maximize a 30+ Running Back….Corey Dillon, Kevin Faulk….Didn’t they even bring in LaMont Jordan
    too?
Laurence Maroney hasn’t been tearing it up for a first rounder, and Jones would be a huge asset to their offense.
Then again, I would love to see him as a three man rotation with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, but at his price, I doubt it.
