McCoy said he wasnt a rep guy and all the idiots at the combine doing the talking said they have no clue what that means.
Its simple when McCoy goes to the weight he does low rep of large weights. So after warming up he might be doing sets of 3 at 375lbs+. The guys that are rep guys do sets of 225 lbs 15-20 times.
I dont know why thats so hard to understand. I mean even if you dont lift weights its not that hard to figure out.
Doing alot of reps of lower wieghts helps endurance and builds your fast twitch muscles. While doing low reps of alot weight builds pure power.
If your high school football team had a weight lifting program you know what Im talking about. You might start out at 8 reps of 135. Then move on to 8 reps 155 then 6 reps of 185 to warm up.
After that you might switch to 5 reps of 225 and then 3 at 250 until your down to 1 rep each time you switch the weight until you meet your max out.
Thats how you build pure power which is what you need when your young and trying to improve your strength.
Power lifters like to adjust their weights often during worksout when rep lifters like to just stay at 1 weight the whole.
Its not hard to understand.

I think it says a lot more than some people want to admit. Let's face it, PRESUMABLY, Suh has been making the rounds on the banquet circuit and yet, he shows up to the Combine in better shape than a lot of guys who didn't. Mayock was talking up McCoy and then he comes in and while he may not have blown his shot at a Top 5 pick, I think he blew a chance at the top pick. Unlike QBs, his pro day will be pretty close to what he did at the Combine and he may disappoint a lot of others like Andre "Biscuit Factory" Smith did last year when he showed up out of shape to the Combine and then didn't impress anyone at his pro day. The Bengals still took a flier on him and after a holdout, he shows up and breaks his foot.

".... So does that mean there is more upside once McCoy goest to s pro team that will start making him put in the work in the weight room?
In other words if McCoy played that great without being a dedicated gym rat workout warrior imagine how good he'll be once he starts."
Yes, that's an excellent point you bring up because as everyone knows, lazy people all of a sudden become 'gym rat workout warriors' once the checks start coming in.
.................................
Perfect example of a fat guy dominating little guys in college. I was intrigued by him until I saw this. You're that big you better put up some fantastic strength numbers because almost everyone in the Pros will be more athletic than what he went against in the NCAA / High School.

I can see this effecting him. Or I don't see it effecting him.
Didn't Chris Williams only put up 22 bench reps at the combine last year? He still went 14th overall.

Hey "Big Stretch"
You know what is REALLY tiresome? People who come to this site, and then complain about the content as if they are expert bloggers.
It's HIS blog
He's been successful doing it
He's a respected NFL source
He can write any dang thing on it he wants
Please, please, PLEASE go away from here and stop trying to talk to the author of the blog as if he listens to you or cares at all what you think.
Just go elsewhere if you don't like it.

Attention dummies and non-weightlifters:
McCoy's pathetic number of reps of 225 (yes, it is pathetic when a guy 100 lbs heavier than me benches 225 for fewer reps than I do it is pathetic) doesn't mean he is not strong, it just means he was not dedicated in the weightroom.
If a player is not dedicated in the weightroom then it is apparent that he has not been doing the little things to get better at his craft. This is a redflag.
For those of you who think that he'll be even better once he dedicates himself, you have to realize that once he starts getting paid, his actualy dedication will likely fade even more. People just don't learn how to be dedicated over night, it is something that has always been a part of you, and if McCOy isn't dedicated now, he won't be once you stick a bunch of money in his face.

These idiot pundits, and their ridiculous obsession with raw numbers, crack me up. The so-called "draft geniuses" are the same guys who let Jerry Rice slide down to the 2nd half of Round 1 because he was "too slow", who let Joe Montana slide to the 3rd round because he was "too small" and didn't have a "big arm", and who vaulted Cryin' Ryan Leaf to #1 overall pick because of his size and arm strength, despite having more red flags than a Chairman Mao parade. Bottom line - these guys might as well use a dart board, since too often they don't pay attention to stuff that counts, like character and how good of a football player the prospects are.

It's hard to judge just from watching the videos but there seem to be huge disparities between how much extension in the arms each player produced per rep.
No one seemed to be making sure that every one locked their arms on each rep. McCoy seemed to use a pretty narrow grip and locked his arm out whilst Jeff Owens used a wide grip and appeared to keep a pretty decent elbow bend. I wouldn't have counted many his 44.
Suh had pretty good form and produced the better performance, but McCoy's primary failing seemed to be to be that it looked more like a work out than an attempt to try and get away with as little lifting as possible so that he could pump out the maximum number of reps.
I was shocked, considering the importance placed on these tests, you would think they would want apply a consistant standard.

I love how you clowns on this site make references to arm length, yet fail to do any legitimate research:
Suh's Arm Length: 33 1/2 in.
McCoy's Arm Length: 33 3/4 in.
So what is your excuse for him benching 225 9 less times than Suh again?

Last I checked football isn't played while laying on a bench and pushing players into the sky for reps. Unless you want your defensive lineman face up on the ground with the opposing team's lineman pancaked on top of them. In which case you rightly deserve to have the 32nd ranked run defense. Further, regular bench press isn't even hitting the correct angle that these players will be in while taking on opponents. If anything, incline bench is a better test exercise. Regardless, strength is only one factor to consider because football is really a game of collisions where large moving masses collide with other large moving masses with the winner being the one who generated the greatest amount of momentum (mass X velocity). Maxing out on a bench press doesn't accurately reflect this. While 23 reps isn't impressive, it is adequate enough to demonstrate that his strength is sufficient for the rigors of NFL football. So what does his film tell us? Prior to this "test" he was the consensus #2 overall prospect behind Suh. This shouldn't change that perception. Besides, McCoy is a penetrating tackle who relies more on his athleticism than strength alone.
