Report: Redskins want Peppers

0205_Julius-Peppers.h2.jpgThe sentiment that defensive end Julius Peppers will be paid more like Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen, and DeMarcus Ware and less like Albert Haynesworth omits the possibility that the same team that gave Haynesworth $40 million guaranteed might decide to take full advantage of the rules of the uncapped year by chasing Peppers, too.

Jason Reid of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins “are expected to pursue” Peppers, which means that he’ll likely be signed by daybreak on Friday.

Similar rumors — though much more rampant — emerged last year regarding Haynesworth and the Redskins.  At one point, our pal Lance Zierlein of KGOW in Houston reported that it would definitely occur.  And occur it did; a $100 million deal was negotiated between midnight and 5:30 a.m. on the first morning of free agency.

If/when the Redskins land Peppers and switch to a 3-4 defense, the eight-year veteran would move to outside linebacker for the first time in his career.  As Reid points out, the key player in all of this will be the aforementioned Haynesworth, who might be expected to man the line-clogging nose tackle position — and thus yield the glory to Peppers.

So on the ten-year anniversary of the greatest collection of highly-paid individual players who couldn’t function as a team, it’s fitting that the man who wrote the checks for the 2000 Redskins could be getting ready to do it all over again.

Could happen, but there aren’t many big name free agents who haven’t linked to the Redskins at some point each off-season. I think at this stage, the media is taking a chance that this is one of the true ones in return for reader interest.
Call them inconsistent but Peppers and Haynesworth on the same team is going to make the Redskins appear even more like the Yankees.

The Redskins want a high priced free agent…
In other news, the sun rose this morning…

  4. JimmySmith says: Mar 1, 2010 11:26 AM

Shocked, not that the Deadskins would blow this much money but rather don’t they already have one overpaid, lazy fat ass on thier d line, why do you need two?

  5. tre_fizzle says: Mar 1, 2010 11:27 AM

Great. Then the two of them can alternate which plays they put effort into.

  6. Laxer37 says: Mar 1, 2010 11:28 AM

The Redskins are interested, they will sign him, and it will end badly for everyone involved.

YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! OH PLEASE REDSKINS!!!!! GET THIS MAN!!!!! I’M NOT PAYING HIM SO I DONT CARE!!!
Haynesworth, Peppers, Fletcher, Orakpo, Carter, Rocky, Landry, Hall with Haslett running it….. that is gonna be one sick Defense!!!!
    HAIL SKINS!!! HAIL!!!
Shut up Florio!!! u damn hater!!! Sydner wants to win! so why not get the best players out there!!!
Its better than being a Browns fan watching every 1st class free agent pass by going to other teams!

  8. KILLER FIN says: Mar 1, 2010 11:30 AM

BETTER OUT BID THE PATSIES, THEY’RE HOT FOR HIM TOO!!!

  9. BDiddy says: Mar 1, 2010 11:30 AM

Well so much for Snyder finally ceding control to his GM and head coach.

  10. RIP__21 says: Mar 1, 2010 11:37 AM

Normally I would be against this, but since this is a uncapped year go for it. Skins FO just needs to structure the contract so he gets the biggest chunk this year.

  11. BLACKQBWHITERB says: Mar 1, 2010 11:39 AM

    Hey Shanahan-
I thought you and Bruce Allen were supposed to put a stop to this nonsense!!!!!!!!!!
Get some offensive linemen, G+_(*&^%$damm you
and stop with the Adam Archuleta, Albert Haynesworth, Deion Sanders Bruce Smith Bull*&^%
If this is something the skins do, nothing has changed…..a bitter reality for skins fans to swallow
The defense will be ok, it has been. Get some linemen first and then a QB if you want to win football games.

  12. Super Kyle says: Mar 1, 2010 11:40 AM

I’ve told this site from the day I first saw a post about peppers wanting to leave Carolina that he has always wanted to play for the Redskins and was talking to the patriots as well. His cousin works for me and I’ve actually seen the text conversations they have.

  13. Florio-is-a-tool says: Mar 1, 2010 11:40 AM

You can give the L’il General a sun tan but you can’t change his spots. Shanahan isn’t going to change that franchise. Sorry guys but the fans deserve better.

  14. scooby says: Mar 1, 2010 11:41 AM

So if the browns talk about peppers it’s tampering.. but when the redskins say they’ll pursue him its ok?

  15. dldove77 says: Mar 1, 2010 11:41 AM

    Caveat emptor, Redskins.

  16. Nevisyakker says: Mar 1, 2010 11:43 AM

“Call them inconsistent but Peppers and Haynesworth on the same team is going to make the Redskins appear even more like the Yankees.”
I hope you are referring to their over-sized payroll comparisons and not productivity leading to championships.
Haynesworth was probably the worst “per-value” free agent signing of last year and Peppers may well earn that title this year.

  17. BBB82 says: Mar 1, 2010 11:43 AM

OMG!!1! They’re talking about Peppers, that’s tampering!! Get on it Florio!

But the previous NFL New York Yankees were terrible and then folded!

  21. jj jones says: Mar 1, 2010 11:49 AM

Why doesn’t Snyder just go ahead and trade Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps.

  22. J-oh says: Mar 1, 2010 11:49 AM

Oh, Dan Snyder, you are a joke. As for Shanatan, he’s not much better.

  23. ParkerFly says: Mar 1, 2010 11:50 AM

I can’t imagine anyone would be shocked by this.
I can imagine the Redskins being $100 million over the salary cap if it does return after 2010.

  24. Slow Joe says: Mar 1, 2010 11:51 AM

  26. paragon11 says: Mar 1, 2010 11:58 AM

    @footy_29:
I agree with you about the Yankees comparison if they end up with Peppers, but at least the Yankees are in contention year in and year out. Sure, they had a drought of World Series titles, but they are in the playoff picture. Can’t say the same about the laughable Redskins.

  27. DanSnyderSux says: Mar 1, 2010 11:59 AM

Call them inconsistent but Peppers and Haynesworth on the same team is going to make the Redskins appear even more like the Yankees.
    Without the championships, of course.

  28. DoomsDayD75 says: Mar 1, 2010 12:02 PM

Anyone with half a brain assumes the redskins will pursue Peppers. It’s what they do.

  29. Bossman says: Mar 1, 2010 12:03 PM

So, I guess Danny Boy still gets to play Fantasy Football even though Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan were supposed to bring some common sense to that organization.
Snyder is the NFLPA’s best friend.

  33. Bill In DC says: Mar 1, 2010 12:17 PM

LOL, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
This figures, ‘The Danny’ will overpay for a name player whose reputation exceeds his production.

  34. Peoples Champ says: Mar 1, 2010 12:17 PM

Same ol’ Redskins. Throwing money at EVERY big name free agent. You would think, with Shanahan there, things would be different. If Peppers doesn’t want the rest of his career to go into the toilet, he would sign with somebody other than the Deadskins.

  35. Dawgpound2009 says: Mar 1, 2010 12:22 PM

Last time I checked the Yankees were selling ” 2009 World Series Champions ” T-shirts. Are the Redskins selling “Proud Home of the 4th pick in the draft” shirts? Its who you spend the money on that matters not how much you spend. The Yankees must have done something right whereas the ‘Skins seem to pertually throw their millions down a rathole.

  36. isonic1 says: Mar 1, 2010 12:23 PM

This is a very easy rumor to “report”. Any big free agent will be linked to the Redskins. Rolle, Sproles… go ahead and link them to the Redskins. It’s easy reporting! I could probably do this job…
btw – you guys have any openings? I will report every free agent going to the Redskins.

  37. Bob Nelson says: Mar 1, 2010 12:23 PM

Redskin fans are happy to pay for over the hill players.
The tradition goes back to the days of George Allen.
These players are getting their final payday before leaving the NFL. They don’t care if the Redskins fans are paying them.

  38. DC Vikings Fan says: Mar 1, 2010 12:24 PM

If Washington does pursue Peppers, you have to wonder if this is just the same old stuff but with a “New and Improved, Now with Allen and Shanahan” label on the front of the media guide.
This will piss off Haynesworth, who doesn’t want to play the run exclusively. Playing Peppers out of position–didn’t they learn anything from the Jason Taylor experience?

  39. boysroll says: Mar 1, 2010 12:27 PM

thats the problem with this org. oline sucks and samuels just retired. Hey…lets go after a dlineman.
bunch of dopes. I love it though. You have 100 million fat boy haynesworth who i see out partying all the time in the area and possibly another high paid guy who will also be demotivated because they are secure for life.
Great management style there midget weasel boy…..LMAO.
    Go Boys!!!!

  40. kennethnoisewater says: Mar 1, 2010 12:40 PM

Wouldn’t Haynesworth make more sense at the DE position? Like how the Patriots used Seymour, it would be a complete waste of his athleticism to have him occupy blockers.

  41. Howie Handles says: Mar 1, 2010 12:51 PM

Personally, I don’t believe Peppers is as good as his reputation, but whatever.
While everyone bashes Synder for his free spending, I wish my damn Bears were half as free spending.

  42. Akshun says: Mar 1, 2010 1:01 PM

The funny thing is.. you guys make a big deal about him possibly going to the Eagles or Pats because of his actual “list” of desired teams to go to.. i doubt the Redskins are on that so why does this story even matter if you care to make that “list” of his so important in other stories

  43. hizzle1281 says: Mar 1, 2010 1:13 PM

    kennethoiswater—Seymour didnt weigh 350lbs

  44. gurnblanston says: Mar 1, 2010 1:16 PM

Redskins fans are hanging by a thread, hoping that it is only the Redskins’ much deserved reputation that leads agents to link their players to the team. Please, no more of this crap. Draft OLs and find running backs in later rounds or maybe even on the roster. No big signings at all.
I’ve got the Capitals ticket office on speed dial so I can get an early deal on next season if the Redskins win the offseason championship again.
    Danny Boy sucks! Hail!

  45. Brohamma says: Mar 1, 2010 1:17 PM

As a life-long New England fan, this is GREAT news!!
I just don’t see Peppers being able to make a significant transition into the New England defense. I look at his abilities and see another Adalius Thomas on the horizon.
Both are outstanding football players, no question. The question though is can they adapt to the Patriots system? Thomas couldn’t and I honestly don’t think that Peppers will be able to either.
It’s, potentially, way to much money to risk. Use the cash on Dansby and give Mayo a legit partner in the middle.

  46. danielcp0303 says: Mar 1, 2010 1:26 PM

With Big Albert and Peppers, they might have the laziest dline in the league. This is great news for my Cowboys!

  47. Polo3 says: Mar 1, 2010 1:32 PM

What I’m reading on here is a bunch of whiners who would probably LOVE to have Peppers but more than likely are fans of team who’s owner is a tight wad!! Get over it, if Snyder wants to spend his money then so be it!! If the Skins are going after Sproles and Peppers its more than likely a request from Shanahan and Bruce Allen so stop getting your panties in a wad with the “looks like nothing has changed for the Skins”. Bunch of haters sounding like high school girls!!
    Hail Skins!!!!!

  48. coz says: Mar 1, 2010 1:35 PM

now this is a suprise. NOT
this is why redskins will continue to suck with their owner

  49. Katmanduu says: Mar 1, 2010 1:43 PM

The Deadskins just don’t get it. They just don’t get it. It is pure joy watching that team operate, then fall flat on their faces in the fall. Then….the smug looks on that obnoxious fanbase just takes the cake.

  50. dietrich43 says: Mar 1, 2010 1:54 PM

And the rest of the owners will gladly let Danny Snyder throw money around like a drunk sailor, because they’ll use it to shoot down any collusion charges from DeSmith and the NFLPA.
And this is totally like Shanahan. He threw money at bad DL for years in Denver. Remember when he signed like the entire Browns DL?

  51. smiley says: Mar 1, 2010 1:55 PM

    Hail beatches!!

  52. dlmcc0909 says: Mar 1, 2010 2:11 PM

Shanahan and Snyder are a match made in heaven. Two guys that love throwing ridiculous money at overrated veterans. the Redskins totally suck on offense. How much money do they want to spend on the Defensive side of football when they have a crap QB and terrible receivers. Peppers has a tendency to be even lazier than Haynesworth.
you cant just collect a bunch of names and ignore things like the cost and the fact that there are other more important holes that need to be filled.

  53. AllThat says: Mar 1, 2010 2:22 PM

Peppers needs to go to Chicago so he will be able to play the DE postion. Go Bears!!

  54. Pantherfan10 says: Mar 1, 2010 2:33 PM

Would love to see that happen, would be the highest paid D-line to not make the playoffs

  55. joshington says: Mar 1, 2010 2:43 PM

Please please please don’t let this be true. Please please please.

  56. footy_29 says: Mar 1, 2010 2:58 PM

It seems that many people didn’t see Haynesworth last year because he was pretty beastly. I’m not sure where the lazyness factor kicks in he wasn’t going to start every game and every snap – all teams should have expected that when they pursued him.
Haynesworth as a 5-tech could put his skills to good use.

  57. jsdarkman says: Mar 1, 2010 3:22 PM

This is not about winning football games. This is about Danny having a need – every year – to have the fanciest toy. Hello 5-11.

  58. SixBurgh6 says: Mar 1, 2010 3:48 PM

    Good lord.
Didn’t they empty their coffers enough already last year for Albert Haynesworth?
Does Dan Snyder have bottomless pockets?

  59. HAILSKINS says: Mar 1, 2010 4:27 PM

Yeah because this will protect Jason Campell or who ever is the QB. This would be foolish. I like peppers and a few years back would have loved to have had him. That being said its time to blow this team up and start over. Build a new YOUNG O line and D line. Get some recievers who can get open and are not shorter than 6 feet. Also develop a QB and dump Portis. Any skins fan who thinks this move would make them any closer to beating the GOD DAMN COWBOYS, EAGLES , OR GIANTS ARE CRAZY!!!!! I want to celebrate another Super Bowl win not brag about how awesome of a D line the team has then wonder why they cant get into the playoffs.

  60. GoCaps8 says: Mar 1, 2010 4:32 PM

(to the tune of Speed Racer)

He’s gonna give up the cash!

unless and until (to borrow a florioism) the skins upgrade their offensive line, nothing else will really matter. julius peppers, the king of inconsistency, won’t the team win more games than a solid, stout offensive line will.

  67. Big Tex says: Mar 2, 2010 6:58 AM
