When we received from the UFL the e-mail indicating that the league will be making a “major announcement” on Wednesday, we thought again of the Scouting Combine rumor that the NFL has tried to buy controlling interest in the upstart league.
Given that the press conference will be held in Sacramento and that the attendees will be UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue, Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson, and Dennis Green, coach of the California Redwoods, it’s safe to assume that the major announcement is that the team is, as expected, moving to Sacramento.
It’ll be the second UFL franchise to flee a city that already houses an NFL franchise, a move so smart that the UFL should have done it that way in the first place. The Redwoods previously were headquartered in San Francisco, and the New York Sentinels have moved to Hartford.
Goodell should buy out the UFL make it an international leauge & see how it pans out before running the NFL into the ground!!! but that would be too simple!!! But at least when the NFL has their lock out we still might be ablr to watch football!!! Goodell sucks!!!
are they making any moves regarding some of these guys that may not get drafted the week of April 22 – 24?
Or will they wait for NFL practice squads to be filled before making any moves?
I hope by the start of the 2011 season the UFL has 8 or 10 teams in two divisions. That can give it the needed base to grow and expand as a minor league/developmental league to the NFL, not a competitor.
KILLER FIN-
How did NFL Europa work out?
i think we are now witnessing the beginnings of a true minor league for the NFL
may take a few years, but i really think it will happen
now, all the UFL has to do is ADVERTISE
i can’t tell you how many hardcore/diehard NFL fans i spoke with that had NO CLUE this league was even happening
KILLER FIN: They had that in the NFL Europe league. I actually liked the product but apparently I was in the minority. Now if the NFL would back another off season scheduled league, it would get a huge response.
If they REALLY want a good way to make the UFL fly – I have the perfect idea. Make a deal with the Canadian Football league to play against them some games. When the UFL is the home team, it’s UFL rules and field size then Vice-Versa when a CFL team is the home team.
The Champion of both leagues can play a “North American Bowl.”
It would benefit both leagues.

competition breeds quality. bring it

Isn’t that what NFL Europe was?
Internationl league only won’t work because of the cost to travel to other countries. NFL wants a team in London but realizes if they do it it will have to be 2 teams to share the cost of traveling to the US.
The UFL is not the AFL.
The UFL is a teletubbie league, that is hideous.
Ugly Football League.
There is no way the NFL assi.. itself with this Mr Rodgers league.
Dennis Green announces he has one testicle.

No No…
I think the problem with the NFL Europa League was that no one could relate to teams based in foreign countries. I more easily relate to a Hartford this, or a Sacramento that, than to the Rhein Fire, regardless of what players are in it. It didn’t make sense, and no one cared. On the other hand, the USFL had some good teams and they were pretty competitive, dispite being underfinanced, directly competitve with the NFL (later) and poorly owned and managed. There is a place for the UFL. Why not? It’s funny to me that people who say they are football fans put the start-up league down, as if loyalty to the NFL is a paying gig. The XFL was somewhat interesting, with the likes of “He Hate Me,” and others. It gives you more football choices and it could end up being a nice feeder system for the NFL, too. So, give it a chance and don’t be so quick to condemn something just because it is new or different.
The plan is to utilize the UFL as a developmental league. Huyghue and Goodell are tight, worked together under Tagliabue, and they are using the UFL as a developmental league and also testing other markets for the NFL’s floundering franchises to relocate, such as Jacksonville.
Im actully pretty sure that they are gonna be announcing the name of the Hartford franchise wednesday. That is the announcement. Go Knights.
I KNOW THIS!!! NFL EUROPE folded like a taco!!! When the NFL goes international the NFL will NOT prosper like it does here in the states!!! most foreign countries hate Americans & their pastimes but Goodell does not see it this way, that is why Goodell sucks!!! he does not listen to reason!!! The UFL would also work better if it was in the off season of the NFL instead of during the season!!! LISTEN TO THE FANS!!!

No need to copyright your idea, nobody would want to use it.

I am not one to crap on somebody’s ideas, but your idea was creative, it would broaden the fan base for the UFL and CFL, but the differences between the two leagues are too great. If you boil it down, what do you do if you have an unbeaten CFL team and an unbeaten UFL team? who will have the homefield advantage?
So not a bad idea, but just a tad of a reach.
I am going in the direction the UFL being a minor leage for the NFL, I like the seasons running concurrently – due to the game being so physical. Maybe they can start the UFL season a little bit earlier, maybe not.
But as far as team placement, you have Los Angeles, Birmingham, Al., Hartford, Conn., Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, San Antonio would probably love to have a team – but these are small market areas that could support a pro football franchise.
Minor or developmental league would be best.
The UFL will adverstise by putting a 5 dollar off coupon in a box of Captain Crunch.

Actually, the UFL will get free advertising on milk cartons.

What’s the UFL? :>)
I hear they are putting a team in Philly
As they do not have a pro team at this time

that description almost fits Jacksonville
This league could be sucessful in the long run and a partnership with the NFL could solve a lot of problems.
For example, think about this in 10 year, the NFL moves the Jaguars or Bills or another dieing market to LA or Toronto or wherever. Then sells the older stadium and possibly the franchises identity (this would not work for a storied team like the bills) to its developmental league the UFL.
