Why doesn’t the NFL get 5 to 10 scouts/player personnel guys to time the players, throw out the fastest and slowest times (like the judging in the Olympics) and then take the average of the other scouts. That might make too much sense but it’s a thought.

why dont they use a laser site that cuts off the timer when the runner passes it?? it would be stop all the variations in the timing

They showed overlay screen with Lefevour and Tebow. Tebow was officially .06 behind Lefevour.
They also showed the overlay screen with Mays and Ford. Mays was twice as close to Ford as Tebow was to Lefevour. Yet Mays’ difference was clocked .15 behind Ford.
So he trailed by a lesser distance, but was somehow clocked farther apart.
That is the issue here.

It’s insane they don’t have better technology for this at this point.
Who cares about Carroll’s stopwatch from up in the crowd? Have you ever used a stopwatch? There’s not much of a difference in a 10th of a second when you’re timing it by hand. But when a 4.4 is fast and a 4.5 is slow, a million stopwatches won’t do any good.

who cares anyway. really.
lots of players blew us away on their 40. then they put on a uniform and sucked.
combine is a joke. those guys played a few years of college ball. film speaks for itself.
any gm that wants a player for what he did at combine doesn’t deserve to be in the nfl.

you’re a genius ! you obviously know a lot more about sport science than you know, the guys with degrees…masters and probably Ph.Ds in exercise and sport science and know that physiological test mean absolutely nothing at all, mean while teams should ?…..just watch college film ? Oh wait, guy who produce in college aren’t guaranteed to produce in the pros either….Than just interview them? Oh wait, they already do that and still get it wrong…..

Here’s your answer.
Make the whole goal line the starting line.
Line up 20 players at a time.
Give them a “ready, set, BANG” for the signal.
Outfit them each with a sensor to capture the important data. (speed, acceleration, time)
You’ll get them all in and out of there with correct timing.
Roger, if you’re reading this, there’s no charge. Just do it. If a bankrupt IRL or CART can afford telemetry on their cars, the NFL should be able to spring for a few dozen once a year.

4.28 and 4.43 are o.15 of a second…..are you expecting him to be 5 yards behind Ford? That’s almost 1/8 of a second….Of course there is gonna barely be a difference, like I said before in a different post.. These two guys on the same field not running side by side, will look the same speed… Our eyes would not be able to detect the difference….

Don’t they have electronic timers like in the Olympics? Shoot, my high school had an electronic timer for such things, so the idea that the NFL combine relies on guys with stopwatches is insane.

two points:
1) Yes, times can be innaccurate, even official times.
2) It’s obvious that Pete Caroll is coming up with a conflicting time that is ludicrously lower than even the unofficial time because Taylor Mayes is his guy, and he’s trying to give him whatever edge he can in his 40 yard dash number. Any uncertainty he can provide is basically Pete Caroll giving the “wink wink nudge nudge” to teams, “Yeah, the official time was pedestrian… but WE know the real time was much lower *wink wink nudge nudge*, right?”

The NFL should move to electronic timing that involves a gun, light, or other type of signal start. No more self-starts. Make players react to something telling them to explode, which would more closely simulate gameday.

Stop using it. Have them start 1 or 2 yards back and a laser triggers a clock when they hit it and stops when they hit the second laser 40yds later. And why even have linemen run it? In case they get an interception?

But the problem is the film. I saw this guy play 5 times this year, and he is an OK player….not even worth a # 1 pick. But some dummy team will do it, and regret it later.
