If any of you watched the Jets late season/ in the post season, you would would know that Greene was the heart of that offense. Jones performed below average, and looked skiddish during that stretch. Shaun Greene and Leon Washington are the future of the Jets.

Statistics back it up but when backs hit the 30-wall they tend to decline. Sure, some hang on and spell starters but they don’t get the workload they once did.
This is a business and the Jets made a business decision.

Thomas Jones had a great year, true.
…but by the end of the year Shonn Greene was the starter (and looked GREAT).
You don’t pay a 32 yr old backup Running Back almost 6 million dollars.
That’s just not good business.
Tomlinson has show us how quickly an aging Back can go from dominant to pedestrian.

—Shonn Greene was the Jets offense in the postseason (while the phins were at home). Jones can be replaced and upgraded…the team still will need to add a 3rd back that can contribute.
And hate on Braylon all you want, but he made some big plays for the Jets and opened up the running game to a new level. He isn’t the ideal #1 with the shaky hands, but he is a valuable asset in an offseason when the Jets can’t go out and make a big addition to the offense.
—Calvin Pace, Faneca, and Bart Scott have all earned their money thus far. The only bad pick up over the past few seasons has been Gholston (draft pick) and the Trade for Lito Shepperd. Heck…if Lito had worked out, the Jets may have been playing the Saints in the Superbowl.
…and there is one player Leon will always block/light up—Channing Crowder…some more of the UF trash—good riddance Lito as well.

you cant really blame the jets on this.. Yes jones is not done.. but he will be soon ~2 more years?
he wants a long term deal at 30 y old?.. that just will not happen.
Jets have one of the best O lines in the league… anyone can look good behind that line and they want to know what they have in the young guys.
Look for them to bring in an older back at a vet min.. to tutor the young guys.

It is the line that made Jones good. Having watched Jones dance in the backfield, it was thrilling to see Greene run over defenses. Jones is worn down and at his age not worth what he wants. If your team takes him, you better have a great o line or he won’t last through half the season.

It sucks he was cut, but the Jets’ve been good in the draft the last couple years..cept for Gholston. But, maybe the guy gets better this year.
Sucks that a guy as good as Jones is a journey man.

Exactly! People blame the players for being disloyal when they hold out for contracts or refuse to take paycuts when they should really be questioning the loyalty of the team. Nobody calls a team disloyal for refusing to restructure the contract of a player who holds out for more money. The player is viewed as selfish for not honoring the original contract he signed. It’s ridiculous that when signing the contract only one side of the deal is forced to hold to the agreement.
A team is concerned with doing whats in its self interest, and I have no problem with players looking out for their own self interest. There are too many cases like this where a hardworking player is jerked around by the team. Vince Wilfork is another example of a player who played out his entire rookie contract even though his value was way higher than what the Patriots were paying for him. Now that it’s time to reach a new deal and receive those dollars he’s earned over the years, the Patriots hold out and slap him with the franchise tag.
Loyalty is not a one way street.

Jets got cute with his contract because they, like Rosenthal, think they can judge him by the year he was born. Iain, where was management last year when he wanted to restructure? He was one of the most underpaid “leaders” in the league last year, yet you didn’t hear him whining. He sat out OTA’s as is his right then went to work.
Ask the Bears how cutting out the heart of their offense has worked out the past 3 years? Sanchez and the Jets will miss his passblocking, durability, and sure hands; qualities Belichick and Parcells value I’m sure.

This is by far one of the dumbest moves made of the off season. TJ is a great player and never causes any trouble like a lot of other players.
I hope the J.E.T.S don’t even close to the play-offs….

They had to cut him. Jones is 32 and though he had a good yr the tread is too close to the steel belting. He is asking for a multi yr deal and wants 5+mil per yr. They had to cut him.

As NFL teams further (d)evolve into monolithic corporations, what players think or want becomes irrelevant. Like the rest of us, players will shut up and do their jobs or risk losing them, whether they make a million dollars a year or $30,000 like we fans.

They paid about $2 million combined last year for Jones, Washington and Greene to lead the league in rushing, surely they can give Jones some money this year.
If not because they think he will be the #1 guy this year, do it because he was underpaid last year and means a lot to the locker room.
Hard to say the team is like a family when you disown your father over money.

Exactly, if a player has a crappy season then yeah he should take a pay cut (Gholston or the grandaddy of them all, Jamarcus). But when a guy busts his ass, has 1400 yards and is a great team leader, then he shouln’t be asked to take a pay cut. If you busted your ass at work and had a great year, and your boss wanted you to take a pay cut you’d be pissed too. $5.8 million is pocket change for the Jets, it’s not like they are going to go under if Jones doesn’t take a cut. If they miss the play offs because Greene and Washington don’t pan out, then they get what they deserve.

Posts like this drive me absolutely insane. I don’t know what, if anything, you do for a living, but if you came out of 2009 knowing that you had had the most productive year of your career for your company, and you were rewarded by your boss coming to you and saying- “congratulations, now take a giant pay cut or you’re fired.” are you saying you would say “yes sir, thank you sir, anything for the company, sir.”
I respect the right of the Jets to what they feel they have to do to keep their financial house in order. But I also respect the right of Thomas Jones to go out and seek the deal he deserves.

by the way there is no cap so why not spending a few bucks on Thomas Jones after overpaying for pretty much every overhyped Free Agency.
I would ask Calvin Pace, Maggie Bart Scott, Faneca for paycuts before asking Thomas Jones

Players should be mad at themselves for agreeing to labor deals that: reward unproven college players instead of proven pro players; give teams the right to pay players less than market value thanks to franchise tags; allow for contracts that can be broken at any time by teams but can’t be broken at any time by players; allow teams to scare away potential suitors (and higher salaries) by forcing teams to give up draft picks for signing a player.
