There’s a very smelly rat somewhere here.
Why do we have to wait for the “official” times in the first place? There’s NO technical reason why they can’t have a display up at the finish line that flashes the “official” time as soon as the runner crosses the finish. For multiple runners, we could see the winner’s time, then the 2nd place time shortly afterwards, if not immediately on a 2nd display.
There is a LOT of money at stake here. A blazing time can net a player millions in additional salary by moving up the draft board. Just ask Al Davis and DHB. With so much money at stake, that invites corruption at some level.
We need a full-blown investigation of this nonsense.

they can just use starting blocks. timer starts upon initial foot pressure. i believe that’s how they do false starts at the olympics and the technology could easily be used for the combine.

Wait… if this is meaningless and everyone says so, than why would we care about getting it right?! Perhaps the numbers are only put out there to distract in the first place, or to catch the stupid scouts off guard? Either way, if most of the teams put little stock in the Combine, and most of the weight is in the game film (well, except for the Jets when they drafted Gholston and the Raiders every year), what difference does a few tenths of a second make?

This is a simple fix. You get three coaches to hand start a computer controlled laser timing system. All 3 relative times will be averaged for each run to reduce human error. This lets you start on movement and not have human error introduced on both stop and start.
You could also have a hardware triggered system from a pressure sensor that detects the most massive pressure spike out of background movements of the player getting in position.
Lots of ways you could do this.

They should have players put their hand on a sensor on the ground, and as soon as their hand/fingers come off that sensor completely the clock starts.
Yeah, they move a little before the hand comes completely off the ground but at least you know they’ll all have consistent clock starts.

Wait, why the hell would you do that? I want to know how fast the guy is, not how fast he responds to a whistle. Going off first motion is the best way to do that.
Let’s not forget we’re doing this to estimate how well guys will play football, not run track.

im glad the got his official time wrong. it drops his draft stock and gives a team like the jets or the patriots the opritunity to trade up to a 16th pick instead of a 4 to get him. dude is just a beast though.
