On the question and answer section of the NFL Labor site, the league wrote the following last week: “No current player needs to take a pay-cut as a result of our proposal.”
The NFLPA chose to snidely respond Tuesday:
“The players of the National Football League are prepared to sign an
agreement today that guarantees that the salary cap will not decrease
and that there will be no decrease in retired players’ or other benefits
under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).”
The NFLPA goes on to suggest a negotiation for an extension to the CBA, a concept the league has already rejected.
PFT’s resident legal man is off the computer, and will have his thoughts on the fun later. But he wrote this morning that the union should request a bargaining session this week.
This “proposal” is a move in that direction, but it looks like grandstanding. It’s free publicity, with a knowing wink.
For the sake of football fans everywhere, it would be nice to see both sides of the bargaining table make a legitimate effort to make some progress on a deal.
i try to just ignore all this crap until it’s over cause like most fans i just want to see football played… but things like this are so gross… i don’t want to write checks my you-know-what can’t cash but if they’re dumb enough to sacrifice their fan-base over these petty little battles i’d be fine watching college ball and the UFL for a while. this whole thing is INCREDIBLY disrespectful to all us fans. the League AND the NFLPA are each saying that they aren’t getting a large enough slice of their huge money pie to keep NFL games going on uninterrupted but the rub is that they do these HUGE press releases every time they cut a new licensing deal and we’re not dumb enough to believe that either side is hard up for anything. get it done or go away is what i say to both of them.
“the union should request a bargaining session this week.”
THIS WEEK!?!?!?!?
they have three days to get this done, actually this day is almost over they have two days because Thursday night when that clock hits 12:01 and switchs to Friday its over for all these players that were going to be free agents!
I would get a sick, twisted, pleasure out of watching the football season go up in flames. Lock out, strike, whatever. These people need to wake up and smell the coffee. Our country is teetering on the brink of economic collapse. There are a whole lot of people who are going to have a hard awakening when they find out that all that money they have has just become worthless.
How about that UFL!?! Or maybe CFL? Fans will get their fix, the entire league better not kill the golden goose.
You realize that the NFL meant that:
A) They want the cap lowered
B) It shouldn;t impact current players, because
C) they want a rookie wage scale – which would accomplish this.
The NFLPA is grandstanding, and they are the ones who have the most to lose. The majority of their players will never have an opportunity to earn the amount of money they currently earn doing anything else.
And that window of eligibility for these guys is fleeting at best.

De Smith was a lousy choice. The players hired a lawyer who clearly twists everything in his clients favor. The owners do have a right to make money on their investments.
File this news story under c**ktease.
Damn you. I was ready for some football in 2011!!!
As I get older, I find myself more and more just not giving a rip if they strike or not. Prima Donna Whiners vs. Billionaire Price Gougers. Near as I can tell, the average guy is the only loser in that mess.
ive said it before.. lock em all out… these RBs and other players who have a 5 year window of when their “great” will go crying in the night when they are stuck in their rookie deals that pay them $500,000 when they could be getting 30 million guaranteed in FA
I will sacrifice my watchin football for a season to keep a competitive balance the way the league is set up now…
there is no business out there where the employees TAKES 60% of the profits and still earn more money through endorsements from actions performed at that job
If they can’t come to an agreement, or try, I wish nothing but the worst on those douchebags.
The one thing I can’t understand is who is the NFLPA grandstanding to?
If it is to rally the troops, that’s one thing. If it is to garner fan sympathy, I just can’t see it happening. One outcome of free agency is that fan’s now seem to connect more with the team and less with the players than the last time there was a work stoppage.
