Another restricted free agent target: Pierre Thomas

P. Thomas.jpgMy big takeaway from Wednesday’s action was that we are going to hear more trade chatter surrounding restricted free agents than ever before.

One name to keep an eye on is Saints Super Bowl hero Pierre Thomas.  He got a second round tender from New Orleans, which isn’t that much to give up for a young, versatile, proven starter.

There is one major factor working against Thomas and someone like Leon Washington, who got the same tender.  Other teams may be hesitant to make an offer sheet when they know the Saints (or Jets) are likely to match it.

Remember: teams aren’t necessarily placing their value on a player with their tender.  They are thinking more about their value around the league.

In the case of Thomas, we wonder if the Saints undersold him.

Pierre Thomas isn’t going anywhere. It may cost the Saints more than they expect to keep him, but he’s not going anywhere.

C’mon Seahawks, go get this guy!

It would be a nice short move from New Orleans to Houston, Pierre.

Very good RB with a huge heart to win. Team player and solid citizen. He’d be worth a 2nd rounder for a team wanting a running back.
But I doubt the Saints would let him leave unless the offer was ridiculous.

Poisen pill his ass…… A lot of teams could use his ability and a 2nd rounder is cheap.

Does no salary cap mean teams won’t be able to insert effective poison pills to scuttle original teams matching?

    aloud2judge,
The reason you rarely see poison pill offers is because payback is a b*tch. Most teams have a ton of RFA’s this year – anyone is susceptible to it. Name a team who needs Thomas, and I will name a guy on that team who the Saints could tun and grab back. And don’t forget – the Saints are not the team to F with , because they have the lowest pick in each round, so if they sign one of your RFA’s, you get the absolute worst deal possible.

The Pats need to use one of their three second rounders to get him then end the Maroney era.

This guy I like, even though he hurt my Colts. The dude just refused to be tackled.

Each team will approach the tenders differently, depending on how they feel about each tender.
    Personally, I think:
    - Pierre Thomas wants to stay in NO
    - The Saints know that
    - They are willing to match the offer sheet
    - They feel the risk of a poison pill is low given PT’s desire to stay in NO
    - They may get a bit of a deal since they will be paying the contract, but the offering team will be looking at the compensation as contract + 2nd round pick
All pure speculation on my part

Well I just want to let any NO fans that they are lucky the Steelers lost key players early in the season or else there would have been a seventh ring for the Black and Gold.

  21. Gautam says: Mar 4, 2010 12:39 PM

The Saints are paying 8.5mil to Reggie Bush and this guy will be worth just a 2nd rounder ?

    Shawn:
    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  23. BBB82 says: Mar 4, 2010 12:48 PM

    I’d gladly give a 2nd rounder for Pierre Thomas. That’s a steal.

  24. Joe in Toronto, Canada says: Mar 4, 2010 12:49 PM

Is this for real, a 2nd rounder?
If so, he’ll be gone and fast. Dude is an excellent runner.

  27. Jimmy Smith and Bob Nelson are IDIOTS says: Mar 4, 2010 1:01 PM

I know the Saints fans are to stupid to understand what a poison pill is all about. If a team uses a PP on Thomas there is no way the Saints match the offer.
The Chargers look on the surface to be the best choice (late 2nd rounder) especially if they lose Sproles. Thomas would be the true #1 back in San Diego and wouldn’t have to share the spotlight with Bush.

  28. wiredup says: Mar 4, 2010 1:07 PM

If NO lets got of PT they might as well put even MORE weight on Brees. I hope they plan on trade/signing/drafting another RB because the udder thought that Reggie Bush can handle the entire work load is not only obsurd its down right impossible.

  29. SonOfNOLA says: Mar 4, 2010 2:15 PM

    @Shawn:
The Steelers are Black & Yellow, sorry buddy.

  30. Ilovefoolsball says: Mar 4, 2010 2:58 PM

@Shawn: it’s nice to dream isn’t it? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. You’ll get your chance at the real black and gold when the black and yellow goes to the Superdome.
The Saints will not let Thomas go. He was a huge part of the success in New Orleans’ running game and he’s an excellent screen pass RB. He is the #1 RB on the depth chart with Bush and Bell following respectively.

  31. NOwillrepeat says: Mar 4, 2010 4:15 PM

Nightmare Pierre will forever be a Saint!!

  32. SF Saints Fan says: Mar 4, 2010 6:06 PM

In order for a poison pill to work the player has to sign the offer sheet with the poison pill in it.
Has anybody ever thought that maybe a player will not want to sign a poison pill contract? He could just as easily sign the same deal with somebody else without the poison pill in it don’t you think?
Poison pills work when the player is ticked off at his “old” team. Pierre Thomas is not ticked off.

  33. bluz1st says: Mar 7, 2010 9:01 PM

The Saints over valued Bush and under valued Thomas on this one.
Someone will consider him a steal for second rounder and offer him so much money the Saints won’t be able to match it. They screwed this one up in royal fashion. He is clearly a better all around everyday ball carrier than Bush.
