Bengals cut Laveranues Coles

Laveranues Coles is on the open market.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced today that they terminated Coles’ contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Coles had a disappointing 2009 season for the Bengals, catching 43 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns while making almost $10 million. But Bengals coach Marvin Lewis praised Coles’ contributions.

“Laveranues really came in and added a sense of professionalism that that room needed — severely,” Lewis said. “And he did a great job in that and was a great professional.”

But for Coles, doing a great job wasn’t enough to keep his job.

Does this mean Boldin will be a Bengal at 12:01 am?

  2. netdawg says: Mar 4, 2010 3:49 PM

everyone still want to report that the Bungles are not going to pursue Marshall/TO/Boldin, etc?

  3. Peoples Champ says: Mar 4, 2010 3:49 PM

Coles is a bum and has nothing left. Bengals, get ready for that Ochocinco and “Ochouno” tandem next year.

  4. kazkal says: Mar 4, 2010 3:49 PM

So with only one Aged WR on the roster… I wonder if this means theyll go after Owens? Kevin Walters? Boldin>

  5. TheBengal13 says: Mar 4, 2010 3:50 PM

Time to go after Brandon Marshall (yes, I read the article that says they’re not interested, but we’ll see) or Kevin Walter (the more probable option).

  6. C. Burgbacher says: Mar 4, 2010 3:50 PM

Good. He was slow and couldn’t catch…. Now sign Brandon Marshall!! I don’t care what Reedy says.

i would love to see brandon marshall on the bengals.

didn’t someone that works here say coles was an upgrade over t.j.?

  11. hineswardcriesafterfumbling says: Mar 4, 2010 3:56 PM

I’d rather send a second and third to AZ for Boldin than have another headcase in Marshall.

  12. contraryguy says: Mar 4, 2010 3:58 PM

Even if they don’t pick someone up at signing time, it’s good news. Coles was a waste of roster space. 21st draft pick, some WRs available there…

  13. kazkal says: Mar 4, 2010 3:58 PM

    Screw marshell he’d cost a 1st,give me Boldin for a 3rd

  14. endzoneview says: Mar 4, 2010 4:04 PM

    Why now?
No roster bonus was due. Why do this on the brink of free agency? To announce to the world that you need another WR?
    Stoopid.

it’d be absolutely insane for the bengals NOT to go out and get anquan boldin. not make a run at him, but go out and GET him. all the cardinals want for him is a third-round pick and the bengals will have two of them this year. or does this just make too much sense for mike brown?? regardless, if it happens, i will cry tears of joy…

  18. BuckeyeBengal says: Mar 4, 2010 4:18 PM

I’m willing to bet the farm the Bengals will be going after one of the big name FA WR’s now. All Coach Lewis and the front office have been talking about is putting pieces around Palmer since the season ended. They have to replace Coles. They don’t have anyone currently on the roster who could be a #2 WR right now and there is no way they bank on a drafted rookie filling that role. Could be Kevin Walter, he’s not necessarily a “big name”, but he’s a solid #2. I’m hoping to see Bryant, Boldin or Marshall. I don’t think they will risk another old WR after the failed Coles experiment. Best of luck to Coles by the way. He’s all class.

  19. Bossman says: Mar 4, 2010 4:24 PM

All of a sudden Bengal fans think that Cincinnati is a good place to play and top-notch players will want to go there.
This just in: It’s a shithole! Your owner is a delusional old miser. Your team luckily caught everybody by surprise last year. Next year Pittsburgh reclaims the division title and the Bengals will be looking at Steeler tailpipes.
Man, you even have ugly cheerleaders!

  20. DaRealism says: Mar 4, 2010 4:28 PM

I wonder if Kevin Walter would be open to returning to the Bengals, though?

  21. hineswardcriesafterfumbling says: Mar 4, 2010 4:31 PM

Marshall is a thoroughbred, there’s no doubting that. But the Bengals would have to give up a first rounder for him, and his off the field problems can’t be ignored. Yeah yeah, another thug on the bengals. Moving on…
Boldin is a beast. Yes, he’s had more injuries than Marshall, but he is a phenom who has stayed out of trouble off the field. According to this credible site, the cardinals are looking for a third round pick for Boldin.
Both are going to want to get paid, so IF Mike Brown decides he doesn’t hate bengals fans and opens his wallet, Boldin is a better fit in my opinion. The Bengals will have 2 third round picks, so ship the 2nd round pick to AZ.

  22. CurseofBoJackson says: Mar 4, 2010 4:40 PM

Bad timing, good decision overall though. Agree with most of the posters as well, this means we NEED to land a FA WR, Bryant, Walter, Boldin or Marshall are all ok in my book as far as signings go, would prefer Boldin or Walter but with this FO one can’t be picky. Will this be another offseason of pleasant surprises? I’ll keep my dumb ass hopes up for it.

  23. Thomas Paquette says: Mar 4, 2010 4:40 PM

The Cardinals want a 2nd round pick, not a third round pick for Boldin. I’d rather go after Marshall and sign him to a deal and give up our 1st round pick and then trade our 2nd round pick for Anquan Boldin than pick up any kid in the draft. Likely, HELL NO! Possible, SURE, anything is.

  24. BuckeyeBengal says: Mar 4, 2010 4:49 PM

@ Bossman, someone is bitter the Squeelers got swept last year. You know what they say, fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. You better worry about your own team’s problems.

  25. hineswardcriesafterfumbling says: Mar 4, 2010 4:58 PM

    Thomas Paguette
Why would you rather give up a first round pick then a second? The only possible reason is that the Bengals blow the round 1 pick more often than not, and tend to find solid players in round 2. But why take that shot?
Honestly, I don’t understand the Marshall talk over Boldin. I’d love to have Marshall, but giving up a first rounder for someone who is marginally better than Boldin who would require a second? This isn’t Marshall vs. Coles or Caldwell or Simpson, this is Marshall vs Boldin.
    1st Round pick & Boldin > 2nd Round pick & Marshall.

  26. theroc5156 says: Mar 4, 2010 5:05 PM

I’m not sure what’s funnier, the fact that people actually think TO is going to be a Bengal or that someone from Pittsburgh actually making fun of another city.
Pittsburgh may be the biggest dump I’ve been to outside of Cleveland and Camden, NJ.

  27. Thomas Paquette says: Mar 4, 2010 5:11 PM

    hineswardcries:
I said I would rather have both, but I think that Marshall is a little more explosive than Boldin is. However, Boldin would give us what we lost in T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a guy that can go across the field and catch the ball. I’d be happy with either one.

“All of a sudden Bengal fans think that Cincinnati is a good place to play and top-notch players will want to go there. This just in: It’s a shithole!”
Pittsburgh is aptly named, if nothing else. If your being a Steeler fan implies that you’re from Pittsburgh, I contend that you have no business calling any other town a shithole.
    Except Cleveland.

  29. goetta-head says: Mar 4, 2010 7:52 PM

I hope we can sign either Boldin or Marshall. Something tells me its going to be neither. Its gonna be some marginal ass dude that we will learn to love by the end of TC … then we start playing other teams.

  30. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 4, 2010 8:30 PM

Send him to Minnie. Favre could make a better receiver out of him. And Brett would love it so …

  31. judaspriest83 says: Mar 4, 2010 10:00 PM

What a ridiculous signing by the Bengals in the first place. That guy did nothing to warrant a contract of $10 million+ for what he did in ’08-’09 season for the Jets. It was a simple over-reaction to the signing of Housh in Seattle. By the way, think the Seahawks want a do-over on that one about now?!

  32. whodey30 says: Mar 4, 2010 11:02 PM

the bengals and more importantly mike brown will suprise everyone by either getting marshall or boldin. whoever gets marshall is getting the 1st still of this decade. a 1st round pick and a solid contract to land a 25 yr old wr that has unlimited skill. as a bengal fan it is well worth it. with our defense and running game to throw ocho and marshall with carson palmer is a very scary situation for the entire league. odds are this will never happen but the rest of nfl better hope it doesnt. reguardless WHO DEY!!!!!!!!!!

Bossman — That’s a fine way to talk about your mom. She’s what makes the cincy cheerleaders so fine. The wrinkle cream (and WD 50) seems to be working in her happy spot. Here’s hoping that pittyy pughs can bring some more hell on the NFL in 2010. It will be like having perogies and stuffed cabbage 9 with a side order or some other slavic treat served at the same time (the result….more putrid gas in the air). A Pgh trandition we all love.

  34. whodey09 says: Mar 5, 2010 12:25 AM

how come no one is talking about antonio bryant. sure hes a nut, but fits in. plus we need some 1 to stretch the fields. he is a perfict fit for the bengals.

  35. domsdad says: Mar 5, 2010 6:46 AM

I don’t know if Marshall will fit anywhere all I can say is at 21 the Bengals will not draft a better athlete. As everyone with an IQ higher than 76 knows the Bengals need to add depth to the offense to not only embarass but humiliate the Steelers and there rapist QB. Jesus, I actually believe that Steeler fans honestly believe that they can compete withe the Ravens and Bengals. This will be a sad season for supporters of sexual offenders. Go Ravens!

  36. domsdad says: Mar 5, 2010 6:59 AM

All recievers are headaches. Anything is an upgrade after Coles.
