Falcons make sure to keep their backfield intact

J. Snelling.jpgThe Falcons had three quality running backs last season, and they want to keep it that way.

The team tendered Jerious Norwood at a first-round level, ensuring he’ll stay on the team.  They also offered underrated bruiser Jason Snelling at a second-round level.

We still think the Falcons need another running back to develop because Norwood and Snelling will be free agents again next year, and Michael Turner takes a pounding.  But having too many running backs is a good problem for coach Mike Smith to have.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the skinny on all the other Falcons tenders (including a first-round tender for guard Harvey Dahl) that we didn’t list on Wednesday.

Trade Norwood. He’s a fan favorite, but any new fans won’t know who he is because he hasn’t been on the field long enough to do anything for the last two years. We need another wideout and help all over the defense. Try to get something for him.

Norwood and Snelling are nothing to write home about. Atlanta should make a high offer for Pierre Thomas. At best, you rob a division rival of a quality, young player. At worst, you don’t get him but in the process you force a division rival to chew up more of their salary. The uncapped year won’t allow New Orleans to spend any more than they ever have. The fact remains that its a shit organization that is subsidized by the local government. When the Saints resume their role as the ‘Aints in the near future, this organization will find itself in trouble again.
