Gibril Wilson on his way out in Miami

Here’s another example how what teams say publicly often doesn’t mean a thing.

The Dolphins will release safety Gibril Wilson Friday, one week after the team’s G.M. Jeff Ireland publicly backed him.

“We have our evaluation of Gibril Wilson,” Ireland said at the Scouting Combine.  “We know what kind of player he’s capable of being. I think he’s going to be a very good player for the future.”

If that’s true, it will be somewhere else.  (And there’s no real reason to think it’s true.)

Wilson’s agent Alvin Keels broke the news on Twitter and will be looking to break the bank again.  Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald points out that Wilson has earned an amazing $24 million in guaranteed money for two one-and-done seasons in Oakland and Miami.

Something tells us lightning will not strike for a third time.

I guess if you get idiots willing to pay you. You can’t blame a man for getting paid more money than what he is worth.

Wow, 28 years old, a SB ring, and a multi millionaire. Talk about the very definition of right time / right place.
    Good luck to him.

Everyone laughed when the Raiders made this error last year…. This guy cant cover TEs and he cant even tackle that well. All-around fraud.
He looked good in NY with Strahan, Tuck, and Osi on the front line. Wouldnt we all.

Hey Gregg, what part of that did Ireland say “we’re keepin homey for sure!” He just indicated that he’d be a great player in the future, he never said “here in Miami.” Damn you guys know how to read into something and then call people liars for something they didn’t even say. The only reason the media gets pathetic lines they complain about is for this very reason!

    Great!!! Now sign Rolle!!!

  12. Outfoxed says: Mar 5, 2010 12:29 PM

When will we ever go to a pay-for-performance based compensation package for these players?
I am not saying to cheat them out of what they are worth, but let’s get rid of paying for what they did in the past and make it for current performance. This will funnel the money to the players (as Howard Cossell used to say) playing with reckless abandon and not front loading to unproven rookies and players who tend to quickly lose their desire to play after the BIG contract has been signed..

Now they have to get Rolle! Bring it back to South Florida, Antrel!

Why would the Dolphins say he’s a worthless douche? Even if they thought it, they’re not going to say it. Simple business protocol as he’s an employee of theirs. Why does everything have to mean that the teams are LYING????

I’m so happy I just might pee my pants… We just got rid of the worst player that dresses on Sundays, and saved a boatload of cash in the process.

Sign ILB Dansby and WR K Walter (Rolle will cost much more than he is worth)
    Trade down to pick 18-24
1 LOLB Brandon Graham or Jerry Hughes
2 NT Terrance Cody (rotates with another buffet killer Solai = dominant run D and no blockers on Dansby)
    2 FS Morgan Burnett
    3 TE Jimmy Graham

  19. KILLER FIN says: Mar 5, 2010 12:55 PM

C,mon Ross open that tight squeeky wallet & get these boys signed ASAP!!! Dansby & Rolle!!! GO FINS 2010!!!

Wilson would make a nice Viking.
He can’t be any worse than what we already have.

  22. mnmaverick says: Mar 5, 2010 1:05 PM

    Look at his tackle stats.
I’ll take him, sign him up Vikings.

  23. FinFan says: Mar 5, 2010 1:20 PM

Gibril was a good tackler but lets just leave it at that

Why has Joey Porter not been realeased before Wilson? Porter has no trade value since all teams know that the Dolphins really want to get rid of him, so why is he still on the team?

  26. mnmaverick says: Mar 5, 2010 1:35 PM

The stats prove that you Dolphin/Raider fans don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

everyone says that, but this is a case where the “stats” don’t tell the entire story. He may not have been the worst tackler or coverage guy, but the problem is the times he does whiff…. almost always cost us points/games!
at the amount he costs, he is nowhere near value…. maybe at a contract about 1/2 the last one

Dude, watch a friggen game. He’s whiffed on too many tackles, dropped balls that were easy INTs and can’t cover a damn TE. maybe if he had defended more passes he wouldn’t need to make all those tackles.
Is he terrible? Well, maybe not terrible, but he’s not that good and certainly not worth what he was getting paid.
Do you think the Fins would release him if he was any good? It’s not like we have a stacked secondary or anything like that.
    You can have him.

  29. INVAIDUH says: Mar 5, 2010 6:40 PM

    AAWWWW….but he was sooo good.
How did Oakland even let’m go?
