Packers keep Clifton

The big-spending Redskins could not pry left tackle Chad Clifton away from the Packers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Clifton will get three years and $20 million from Green Bay.  $7.5 million is guaranteed.

Also guaranteed: That G.M. Ted Thompson won’t be roasted locally for losing Aaron Rodgers’ solid blind side protection.  Now the Packers just need a right tackle.

I am glad the Skins decided not to sign this guy. He is what 33? He isn’t worth the money. Better off trying to find someone in the draft.

  2. jamesz23 says: Mar 5, 2010 7:41 PM

That’s good news – they should definitely look to draft the future LT in 1 of the first 3 rounds of the draft. I think TJ Lang could be the Packers RT of the present & future, he probably should have started somewhere last year on that line.

  5. gopackgo says: Mar 5, 2010 7:44 PM

I dont really understand this move. He was in and out of the lineup all year last year and was inconsistent and OLD! Why give this guy 7.5 million guaranteed when this draft susposedly is deep in o-line help? I understand giving him an offer but not a three year deal that we all know he wont play out. 7.5 for a year i just dont know!

  14. Sober says: Mar 5, 2010 7:59 PM

It is alot of money but there was no other option and the draft was not automatic to have someone ready to start the year. Most likely a 1 year deal which does not matter because there is no cap. I know Rodgers will sleep better tonight.

  15. Fan of Football says: Mar 5, 2010 8:01 PM

Guarantee $8 mil for Clifton who is a shell of who he once was, but don’t pay Wahle back in 2005 when TT blew up the line which directly led to the 4-12 season. Wahle went ahead and had a pro bowl season post Packers. I doubt Clifton gets there.
Ted Thompson, no rhyme or reason. Just idiocy

  16. mrcmos says: Mar 5, 2010 8:02 PM

They need a LT in the first round. Cliffy most likely won’t hold up for the entire year. Re-sign Tausch and let TJ Lang learn his position. JMHO!

  17. PackFanNChiTown says: Mar 5, 2010 8:06 PM

Ted doesn’t do free agency on opening weekend but it’s nice to see he’s willing to protect our QB and spend the money he needs to spend to keep good players in place.

  18. PCinOz says: Mar 5, 2010 8:06 PM

Redskins offered the $20 over 3 years, Clifton gave the Packers the chance to match it.
    Redskins would’nt go higher.

  19. jamesz23 says: Mar 5, 2010 8:08 PM

I’m glad he’s around for 1 season, I wouldn’t be comfortable with a rookie lining up on opening day at LT. Pay him the full 7.5 this season in the uncapped year & than you can cut him after the season is you choose to.
If he would have left GB there would have been 50 comments on here about how the Packers are screwed now. But now that the Packers opened their checkbook they’ll be 50 comments about how ridiculous it was to resign him – can never win.

  20. MarkTroy says: Mar 5, 2010 8:09 PM

  23. packers4life says: Mar 5, 2010 8:21 PM

I’m glad Clifton was re-signed. He did a very good job blocking Rodgers’ blind side last season when he wasn’t hurt. Plus, he is our best option at LT for now. However, I still would like to see the Packers invest a early draft pick on a LT in the draft because Clifton doesn’t have many years left in him and they need a capable replacement.

This was going to happen. Smart move by the Pack. Have TJ floating behind him.
If he goes down he goes down but Ted has played musical chairs to his detriment to much. This keeps a peice of the puzzle and we have the money. Remember- the majority of the sacks last year were in the first half before Cliffy and Tausch were back on the corners for good. Look for them to keep Tausch too unless someone goes nuts on price.

Your the 1 who just said in an earlier post that Teddy doesn’t pay veterans, now he does and you rip him. And big difference the year Wahle & Rivera left the Packers were in bad shape $ wise – right up on the cap because of bad decisions by Mike Sherman – aka Joe Johnson/Cletidius Hunt.

  31. KJ says: Mar 5, 2010 8:49 PM

No matter what the Redskins are one of the top three most pathetic franchises in the NFL.
As for the Packers, this may have been overspending a bit, but I think this gave them a security blanket. Chances are the Packers are still going tackle with their first pick (this draft has incredible O-Line depth, especially in round one). Clifton may move inside to guard if they find a new talent on the outside of the line. Spending 7.5 in guaranteed money is a lot, but at least it went to one of the most underrated players in the last ten years. Behind Pace and Ogden he is one of the best tackles of this generation.

The Packers couldn’t afford to keep Mike Wahle, asshole. The Packers had no salary cap room and they needed to free space up. And are you too stupid to know that Clifton has been to the Pro Bowl already? Yeah thought so.

  39. nerd says: Mar 5, 2010 9:35 PM

He will play in a maximum of 10 games. He also can’t run block worth a lick. Not a bad deal though. TT will draft somebody real and we’ve also got Lang who can back up the LT position.

  40. lovemonkey84 says: Mar 5, 2010 9:47 PM

7.5 mil for the best free agent LT. Give TT some credit. If I would have bet the wife if TT would have done anything in the first week of free agency much less the first 24 hours I would be on the bottom for a month. Considering TT was working against the Redskins and their bottomless pockets, I would say TT did all right.

And now the spin machine starts to make sure the sloth of packer fans agree that this was a GREAT MOVE
BTW, in my opinion Tausch and Clifton have been the most consistent tackle combos in the league – but face the music Puker fans – they are OLD and BEAT (just like your women)

  43. Old_Style says: Mar 5, 2010 10:23 PM

Umm, Rivera played 2 more years, and Wahle 4, including a Pro Bowl season. Freak injuries derailed both of their careers early. It’s hard to say if those injuries happen if they are somewhere else, but they both clearly had a lot left in the tank when released.

  52. Hauschild says: Mar 6, 2010 1:39 AM

The more a guy really thinks about it, the more he comes to the conclusion that TT appears to have no clue about what he’s doing.
But, to his credit, he did at least sign a guy that is pretty solid in pass protection. The thing that bothers me, though, is the fact that TT’s placed himself into this position by nickel-n-diming the O-line for the last several years.
But, TT will remain a god to the Packers’ faithful because no matter what he does or doesn’t do, he never loses. If he lets somebody walk, well, they obviously weren’t worth it. If he panics and bets the farm – because the positions he placed himself into, then he’s made the most of a “bad” situation. It’s classic insanity.

  53. Bob Nelson says: Mar 6, 2010 1:43 AM

Clifton profits from the uncapped year.
He makes about what he was making under his old contract.
This is a one year contract that can be expanded to 3. It is a stopgap measure until the long term solution is found.
Obviously there are several ignorant and foolish uninformed people commenting on things they know nothing about.
As usual many are jealous of the great and wonderful Green Bay Packers and they make very foolish statements.
High revenue teams like the Packers have lots of money for the uncapped era.

  54. Ambrose says: Mar 6, 2010 6:35 AM

It’s only money. Clifton provided a vast improvement to the sack problem, and he will again. Plus, he knows the system like the back of his hand. A new guy would be problematical, as always. Good move. Solid vet.

  55. radioboy20010 says: Mar 6, 2010 7:12 AM

If Clifton had left, Aaron Rodgers should then have learned to throw left-handed so he could watch Peppers and Jared Allen come storming at him before they crushed him.
Anyone who thinks this is a silly deal is silly themselves. It’s really a one-year 7+mill deal guaranteed, and if they draft a tackle, they can put his replacement in next year, if there is a next year.

  56. lovemonkey84 says: Mar 6, 2010 7:30 AM

Makik Bullet said “…both clearly had a lot left in the tank when released”
Neither of these guys were “released.” They were free agents which means the packer had no control on were they went.
and what part of the Packers were up against the salary cap do you not understand. Because of horrible contract during the sherman era, the packers had no chance of signing either of these guys regardless of whether they got hurt the next day or had 10 all pro seasons for some other team.

The packers had 5 mil on the table the whole time and when the Redskins came calling, Clifton let the packers match. This is really a 1 year deal for 7.5 with a team option for year 2 and 3. Consider Clifton was the best LT on the market and the packers had no one else as a must start, I heardly think TT “blinked”

One thing is for sure, you know nothing about pro football. You are comparing guards, and what they are valued at, with a left tackle! Did you know Jerry Kramer isn’t in the HOF? Because he’s a guard.
A while back you posted a link to a Cliff Christl article to show how TT payed big bucks to Ari Fleischer to smear Farve. When I read the article it clearly stated that TT did not hire Ari, the executive committee did. Christl (a long time Packer commentator who has over a number of decades failed to distinguish himself in any way) went on to say the involvment of the EC historically was a bad thing for team decision making. Of all the meatballs that post here, you’re the only one I’ve ever seen post a link to an article that contradicted his point. Who do you think you are, Karl Rove?

So Clifton won the stare-down with TT by pulling the “Redskins visit” card, big deal. Outsmarting TT is about as hard as taking a crap the morning after eating fried cheese curds.
If Clifton stays healthy, given the going rate for starting LTs, $7.5M guaranteed is a fair price. However, we all know he won’t stay healthy. TT will probably look to the 3rd or 4th round for another average young LT to add to the present group of average O-linemen. Looks like TT’s lack of planning on the O-line will force Rodgers to pay the price for yet another season. He’ll apparently get to know the names Allen, Peppers and Vanden Bosch pretty well next season.

It’s either re-sign Clifton or trust the most important position on your line to a rookie. I think I would take Clifton especially considering that there isn’t anyone currently there that has shown the ability to step into that position and take it over.
I would still expect them to address left tackle in the draft so that they can get someone in for depth and hopefully groom to take over eventually.
Hopefully they re-sign Taucher as well. The O-Line really was solidified when Cliffy and Tauch were both on the field last year.
