Rams doing background checks on potential top picks

The St. Louis Rams are doing their homework on potential first overall picks in April’s NFL draft, and that homework extends beyond just film study.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Rams already have sent investigators to do background checks on Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen and Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford. The Rams also will conduct background checks on Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

What the Rams are doing is not unique in the NFL. Smart teams do thorough background checks on potential top draft picks, because they want to know what kind of people they’re potentially making a public face of their franchise, and they want to ensure that a player they’re going to pay tens of millions of dollars won’t do anything foolish with the money.
