Weaver does a deal in Philly

Early this morning, MDS passed along word that the Eagles and fullback Leonard Weaver were close to terms on a three-year deal.

Now, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network (via the Eagles’ official web site, which makes it hard for the team to later deny it) reports that the two sides have agreed on a three-year, $10 million deal, a record for a fullback.

Per La Canfora, more than half of the money is guaranteed.

The Eagles had tendered Weaver, a restricted free agent, with an offer that would have provided a second-round pick a compensation.

Now that’s some good news! Now if we could only sign a safety, fill the linebacker holes, figure out the OL, shore up the DL… ha.

Nice! We needed him with McCoy’s lack of experience. Expect to see him running the ball alot more next season

BleedGreenMtState — yes taking the Eagles into the playoffs 8 of the past 10 season makes Reid close to being a complete moron. Makes perfect sense to me.

Let me get this straight – the Eagles use the running game as an afterthought (even though they look unstoppable when they use a balanced attack) – when it came to crunch time last year, they suddenly decreased the use of Weaver (who looked awesome when they played him earlier in the season) – and signing Weaver is the first move they make in free agency?
My head is about to explode. Should we assume that Andy is going to finally use a balanced attack this year????? Or did they sign somebody to be on the field 2 or 3 plays a game? I pray it’s the former.

This is good news when compared to what happened a year ago on the first day of free agency, letting Dawkins go and signing Stacy Andrews and Jason Peters.

Decent. We haven’t had ability & stability at this position at the same time since the days of Keith Byers.

@ smitchell: as the saying goes “all you do when you assume is make an ass out of um and me.
Let the horses plow and the big dawg eat………(really not sure that makes any sense, but I’ve only had one cup of joe after pulling an almost all nighter, but for different reasons than Florio).

Good first step. Now go get a linebacker who can cover the TE and a safety that can cover without getting a personal foul on every other play.

So what did this ‘deal’ involve – 8-balls or dime bags? There is no third option.

Good. He’s a monster. Seattle was dumb to get him go.

  16. smitchell says: Mar 5, 2010 11:13 AM

Opie- that reminds me of Madden’s saying he used to tell his players when he coached – don’t worry if the horse is blind, just keep loading the wagon!

Good job Weaver in getting half that money guaranteed since Banner would certainly try to stiff you down the road with those Mickey Mouse contracts the sign with young players before they make their mark in the league. The signed Sheldon Brown to one of those before he became a top defensive back. Now he has to live with being underpaid until the end of his deal. Rather than tear up a deal that the player has clearly out performed, they stubbornly force a player to live with it. T.O. called their bluff though and forced his way out. Do you think they would have learned anything from that experience. No, not these boys. They play hardball with everyone. So I am glad to see that Weaver got his. Now, time for Sheldon’s deal to get redone.

Not 1 of those things happened on the first day of free agency. Dawkins and Andrews happened the second day and Peters was traded for weeks later.

@TOMBROOKSHIRE- You say the Eagles try to “stiff” players down the road by signing players before they make their mark in the league? I think the Eagles took a gamble as well. They signed Sheldon to a contract extension even though he only had 1 decent year at the time of his new contract. They re-signed him after the ’04 season when the entire Eagles defense looked pretty good because the offense was so explosive that other teams had to pass a lot to try to play catch up so I think the Eagles did Sheldon a favor as well by paying the man. Sheldon should stick to his contract that he has. Nobody forced him to sign at that time. To me, it looks like the Eagles did a pretty good job by recognizing his talents and made a good move by signing him ahead of his Pro-Bowl status. I guarantee you EVERY team would do the same thing!

And to GODS OWN SILVER AND BLUE- Really???? That was a lame ass comment. Seriously. 8 balls or dimebags?? What a F’n idiot!

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
You are kidding right? You aren’t really arguing that Reid doesn’t have the final say on player personnel decisions?
If you are? COME ON MAN.
PS – Just look at the McNabb story. Reid is the only one that wants to keep him and he’ll be back, you watch.

@ smitchell: I like that saying much better than mine!
@TomBrookshire: seriously, get out of the alley, throw the crack pipe away, take a nap, get some Waffle House and rejoing the living. Average our Brown’s contract (including signing bonus divided by # of years) and he’s getting paid very well. Can’t remember the exact number, but top 30 db money in the league.
You can’t simply go by yearly salary as it changes. Plus, he got the bonus money up front. Get some facts together, then detox, then you’ll be able to post more intelligent things…..come to think of it (based on what you’ve said previously), you should just outsource your postings to a drunk zoo monkey. Couldn’t be any worse…
