It's getting harder to keep an open mind about Roethlisberger

We realize that the American justice system compels a presumption of innocence.  The American public, however, has no such mandate; we can come to our own opinions and conclusions about anything we choose, as ridiculous as those opinions and conclusions may be.

And so on one hand we respect the judicial mindset that prefers setting ten guilty men free to incarcerating a single innocent.  On the other hand, we realize that the court of public opinion is close to rendering judgment about Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

At a minimum, he’s a damn fool for allowing himself to be placed in a circumstance that could lead to the making of false charges, especially in light of his other pending legal predicament in Nevada.  At worst, he has the same “entitlement” mentality that supposedly prompted a certain Tiger’s tomcat streak.

The possible difference, of course, is that Eldrick Woods always respected the concept of consent.

It still remains to be seen whether Roethlisberger will be charged in Georgia, where perhaps appropriately he wore a shirt bearing the image of a horned devil (via TMZ).  Regardless, the question of whether Roethlisberger is a good guy or a bad guy churns through the national consciousness, and the signs are pointing toward an eventual verdict of “turd.”

Consider this quote from Ashley Madden, a Georgia College & State University student who witnessed Roethlisberger act like a jerk when someone tried to take his picture on the night that the lights allegedly went out in Milledgeville.  “[H]e snapped at her,” Madden told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “saying, ‘Don’t take a picture unless I’m ready.”

We’re heard chatter of Roethlisberger directing that same attitude toward persons in various contexts, and people of goodwill and pure heart simply don’t treat others that way.

So while he might never face criminal jeopardy for sexual assault or anything else, Roethlisberger’s reputation is dangerously close to imploding in every city but one.  If he ever loses the people in Pittsburgh who have come to blindly adore him, it might be time to call it quits and settle down in a small town in a state other than Georgia.

I’m a Steelers fan, and I wouldn’t say I Blindly adore Big Ben. The first time this happened, looking at everything that went down and woman’s reputation it was pretty clear that Ben slept with her consensually and that she was trying to make a buck off of it.
Now… I don’t know. I really haven’t heard enough to make any judgements, but if Ben has done what he’s being accused of it’d make me absolutely sick and I’d hope that the Steelers would find a way to get rid of him… I don’t want someone like that on my favorite team.
So before you accuse all Steelers fans for “blindly adoring” him, think about it. What about all the Bengals, Browns, and Ravens fans that have “blindly” decided he’s guilty? People want so badly to give the Steelers organization a black eye that they won’t even consider any of the facts for better or worse.
Either way, when it’s a sports figure people are going to base their opinions on something other than what they normally would.

  14. Ben says: Mar 6, 2010 12:11 PM

Not a Steelers fan, but c’mon, Florio – you’re seriously jumping from “he’s a jerk to people snapping his picture” to “he’s got an entitlement mentality just like Tiger” to “he’s a turd” to “he probably raped a chick”?

I was stunned by the first allegation against Ben. This second one has hit even harder. IF… If he is guilty then I want him prosecuted and cut from the team. I’ll burn my #7 jersey.
We do not blindly adore anyone. Their character and actions are important to us.
Mr. Florio…. I think you grossly underestimate Steeler fans. We hold the honor and integrity of our team high. We won’t tolerate a felon. We’re not the Bengals or Raiders.
At the very least Ben is an idiot for again putting himself in a bad situation. At the very worst he could be looking at criminal action.

I used to work for the NFLPA, and still stay in touch with a number of former co-workers and a few agents.
I’ve been told (on more than one occasion) that Ben has a tendency to treat people like shit, and that he often displays the sort of arrogance usually reserved for movie stars or musicians. The first Super Bowl victory went to his head, and like Tiger Woods, he thinks he plays by a different set of rules than the rest of us.
For all we know, there may have been more incidents like this in which the victim was afraid to press charges for fear of being discredited like the woman in Las Vegas.
It will be interesting to see what the Rooney family does in reaction to this second allegation, but I can say that if Charlie Batch had two allegations of sexual assault, he’d be cut in a heartbeat. But Ben’s a great talent, so I expect the Rooneys to look the other way as long as they can.

  32. wyoff says: Mar 6, 2010 12:21 PM

I’m a Steelers fan. I used to be a Roethlisberger fan, but the more I learn about him the more I grow to loathe him as a person.
I’ve heard many, many stories of Roethlisbeger being a world class asshole from people who went to college with him and from people who have encountered him around Pittsburgh. Couple that with repeated reports about him being disliked by most of his teammates and now two sexual assault charges, and it seems to be painting a picture of a sub-Pacman Jones lowlife
He seemed to be a lovable doofus publicly. He also wan initially portraying himself as a religious guy (remember the “Play for Jesus” stuff?). He had a sympathetic story about his mother dying and then his coach dying.
He had millions of dollars in endorsement deals in front of him. Now he’s pissing it all away.
He’s basically becoming Ryan Leaf, but with talent.
That said, unless these reports are completely false AND unless he starts getting his act together, then I’m going to stop watching footbal for a while. It’s hard to care about a team when you start hating its players.

What kind of parents train him to become a Satan worshiper?

The problem with these kind of allegations is that we will never really know what actually happened. These types of cases always come down to a he said she said situation. If this women is making these allegations up, she is helping to destroy the credibility with the public of the thousands of women a year who are actually assaulted. Florio is right on the money on this one. At the very least, Ben is allowing himself to be put in this situation. Like it or not, pro athletes have a target on their back. Furthermore, pro athletes are “supposed” to be role models for the millions of kids that look up to them. They dont get paid the money they do just to play football. Ben should act accordingly. In the worst case senerio, Ben deserves to be in prison.
The sad thing is that if he did do what he is accused of doing, he will likly serve less time than a certin receiver who brought a gun into a New York night club.

Secondly, I hear two possible charges on one TV clip, sexual assault and sexual “coercion”. I hope that if he gets nailed it is for clear “assault”, as if they start prosecuting celebrities (or just any horny guy) for “coercing” a girl at a bar into having sex with them (is a cheesy pick-up line “coercion” ??), well they might as well just shut down every bar in America.

If he is guilty, then put him in jail where he belongs. If he is innocent of the criminal charges, he is still guilty of stupidity.
If he is innocent, it’s time for him to grow up and act responsible. If he can’t do that then get rid of him because he isn’t worth keeping no matter how good of an athlete he may be.

  49. Bettisfan says: Mar 6, 2010 12:36 PM

As a die hard Steeler nation member I can tell you we don’t blindly adore Big Ben. He is an absolute great Quarterback, but well from what I know about him his personality is not so great. There are plenty of rumblings around that town about him, but you won’t hear us saying much about it to others due to team morale.
Steeler fans love their team, and we do blindly adore the team as a whole, but individual players must earn that adoration.
    Savvy!?
Personally, I am more of a running backs fan, hence the Bettis fan namesake. Harris, Bettis, Parker, and whoever follows in their footsteps are who I cheer for individually.
Have fun with the news on Big Ben. If he did what they said he is absolutely as stupid as Tiger Woods, and maybe stupidier. I would expect and insist that the Steelers fire him for breach of contract if he is convicted, and suspened if he is charged. He is not as irreplaceable as he may think he is.

    Wow.
Florio, as an attorney, you should know better than to drum up pitch-forked mobs. “Damn fool”–obviously. But you’ve previously posted the details that undermine the credibility of McNulty’s accusations and made clear you don’t believe them. And I’m pretty sure you’re aware of rules regarding the admissability of prior bad acts–especially those that are nothing more than allegations in a quest for $$$.
Right now, there’s credible evidence to suggest that Roethlisberger is–as Ravenmaniac notes–a dumbass, but none to suggest he doesn’t abide by the boundaries of consent. Let’s not get ahead of the judicial system.

  53. mnmaverick says: Mar 6, 2010 12:37 PM

I know it’s bad karma, but if this stuff makes him a former Steeler, he might just be able to fill the Vikings QB void for awhile. I doubt he’d get into all this trouble if he was away from the big city climate. He’s got talent. He’s won two Super Bowls. He’s younger than Brady or Manning. This league is QB starved. When Favre, Brady, and Manning have retired, what will the NFL have? Exactly my point. I think Brees winning was like Brad Johnson or Eli Manning. He was on a dominant team. It wasn’t necessarily him. His O-line was so good that he was hardly touched and his receivers and RBs were world class with that vastly under-rated Defense.

A couple points here. First, I am an unabashed Steeler fan, as rabid as they come. Florio, people here in Pittsburgh do not blindly love Ben. His reputation has been questionable for a long time. I, for one, am sick of seeing his drunken, stupid mug showing up on the web. It seems that the Reno situation, looked at honestly, reveal 2 equally culpable pigs-Ben and his accuser. They had sex, she wanted a relationship and when it didn’t happen, she decided to exact her revenge. This is different, so far, and as it plays out, I hope the Rooneys have the courage of their convictions and get rid of him. He is an exceptional football player and simultaneously, a criminal douchebag. I don’t want to see this guy in a Steelers uniform, if this is true. In the meantime, I encourage our 8 year old son to respect all kinds of heroes–his family, teachers, police, etc. We have taught him to get to know about athletes and not to just assume that a good player is a good person. We use local examples like Troy Polamalu, Sidney Crosby, etc who are athletes to try to be like, as players and men. Fans of other teams can crow all they want about this, but all professional teams have their share of idiots and good guys. Leagues and teams need to come down hard on the dangerous ones, but given the money involved, it’s unlikely to happen. I for one, hope that if guilty, Ben spends some long prison time and never plays in the NFL again.

Blind Steeler fans? Give me a break! Most people I know realize Ben is kind of a dick but are willing to forgive him because he wins football games. If it’s proven that he’s a sexual predator then I seriously doubt people are just going to stick their heads in the sand. If there’s any truth to this he needs to gtfo of town and I think most Steeler fans would agree with that.

I’ve seen too many of these allegations turn out to be little more than cash grabs. As far as putting himself in that situation, it’s not his fault that people might have sinister motives. He can’t live his according to the least common denominators of society, even if he will an attorney on call 24/7.

  82. 65TossPowerTrap says: Mar 6, 2010 1:14 PM

Not a fan or Roethlisberger or the Steelers, but this story reeks of “hush money” from yet another gold digger. Is Roethlisberger is hound? Probably. Does he hang around in the wrong circles? It appears that way. However, when sports media outlets report a TMZ story that cites, “a 6′-5″ 241lb man with brown hair and brown eyes” was accused of sexual assault, and he’s BELIEVED to be Ben Roethlisberger, you have to take a step back.
Like anyone accused of this behavior in the past, you will most likely be a target for those who want to make claims, and subsequently withdraw said claims when money is presented to keep the story out of the headlines. Go to NFL.com, and Roethlisberger’s weight is listed as 6′-5″ 241lbs. Okay. Is this info coming from the accuser, or the police report? Secondly, google an image of Roethlisberger, and it’s clear his eyes are not brown. Did the accuser guess?
Not defending the guy here, but just questioning how the media can run wild with a story like this, when he’s yet to be charged. Surprised a former ambulance chaser like Florio can be so quick to judge. A college student was surprised that Ben snapped when she tried to take his photo? Remember the last time that happened? He was all over the internet looking like Otis the Drunk. Can’t say I blame him.
Fact of the matter is, Ben should keep his dumb ass indoors, and away from the college haunts.

  84. Meldog says: Mar 6, 2010 1:16 PM

The great ones do NOT have to be arrogant and rude to fans. Peyton Manning is probably the best quarterback in the league right now and doesn’t treat his fans like crap. Ben gets his picture taken and he snaps at the fan; he’s a turd. If he actually committed a sex-crime, then he’s a felon. The fact that he is an arrogant prick just gives a little credibility to a woman who says “he cornered her and wouldn’t accept her rejection”. It seems entirely likely now, knowing his attitude.

  88. Bell63 says: Mar 6, 2010 1:20 PM

The thing with sexual assault charges is, it’s usually one person’s word against another, so even if he did something, he very well could not be charged. Especially considering he must have tip top legal counsel advising him on what to say to authorities. Either way, you have to piss someone off pretty badly for them to accuse you of something like this, so even if Ben did nothing wrong legally, he should be very careful about who he has sexual relations with.

  89. TryTheVeal says: Mar 6, 2010 1:22 PM

Wait, what’s this?…A professional athlete who thinks he lives life by his own set of rules? I’m truly shocked. I thought they spent their off seasons doing charity work, baking apple pies and helping little old ladies across the street. It would not shock me if these allegations are true, would not shock me if they are just a money grab by someone smarter than the athlete. Professional athletes by and large are dumber than a bag of hammers. They tend to forget they are working for a corporation, that is selling a brand, and they are a peice of the puzzle that is the corporation. After the previous allegations, you would think he would have enough common sense to NOT put himself in this type of situtation again, in any way shape or form. This doesn’t mean he has to sit home 24/7, just use common sense and learn from past mistakes. No matter if guilty or not, this is a black eye for his employer, public relations wise. The same employer that gave him 100 some odd million. Public opinion is a fickle thing, and it doesn’t take much to sway people. That being said…..Has Hines Ward chimed in on this topic yet?..Ha ha

I’ve been in bars with him at Miami and he really is a disgusting person who thinks that he is entitled to whatever he wants.

  92. lichnor says: Mar 6, 2010 1:28 PM

You’re underestimating Steelers fans, Florio. The Steelers site that I frequent is probably 80/20 bashing Roethlisberger, and even his supporters are largely saying that he consistently puts the team in a bad situation. Even before this latest incident, Roethlisberger the person has not been completely embraced by many Steelers fans due to his diva-ish personality, bad personal choices, etc. Most fans over the age of 14 can separate liking how someone plays and liking that person as a whole. As a West Virginia alumn, you should know that more than anybody.

  104. Igottz5onit says: Mar 6, 2010 1:53 PM

This is my take, if he is guilty then he should rot in jail. that being said, it has never looked like mcnulty is a sane person but that does not necessarily mean she is lying. Ben is rich, successful and apparently good looking enough to date top notch celebrities. However, I’ve heard several times he has entitlement issues, though the sources of those rumors vary in credibility to say the least. Now we see it in the news that another alleged incident may have happened, to me this reinforces the entitlement theory. On the other hand, the possibility that there could be two devious girls in places like Reno and milledgeville, is not remote. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Ps it is sad how jubilant browns fans are about either a rape or a false accusation.

  105. brownsfn says: Mar 6, 2010 1:53 PM

  106. IceBurgh says: Mar 6, 2010 1:54 PM

While you are right that his reputation is taking a hit and he obviously is putting himself in bad situations; your post loses any pretense of objectivity you would like to feign when you include stories of him being a jerk without at least mentioning all the other quotes for the people of Milledgeville that I’ve see saying that he was being cool and posing for photos with the townies. So there are probably two sides to the story.
As to the whole ‘where there is smoke there is fire’, ‘fooled me once… ‘ crowd; if there is one false accusation why would it be such a stretch to think there would be two (or more)? If anything it would be more likely given the attention the first one got.
As to your shot at Pittsburgh fans. Any teams fans are going to be loyal to their franchise QB that has won them two Super Bowls to a point. And to this point what has #7 done to not deserve this loyalty other than display the bad judgement of youth (riding a motorcycle without a helmet, associate with females that have possibly questionable motivation and had some questionable photos taken in various states of intoxication). He’s never been arrested or proved to have done anything illegal.
That being said I think all Steeler fans would like to see Ben figure out how to spend his offseason in the gym and out of the gossip columns.

So many people are damning Steeler fans for blindly defending their quarterback while they blindly condemn him simply because they hate the Steelers. It’s Hypocrisy Day on PFT!
Evidence presented in the McNulty case overwhelmingly indicates she’s lying. Research it. From what’s come out so far, it appears this woman may be alleging she was drunk and coerced into having sex. That’s dicey territory for a man. No means no. But when a woman says she was coerced, she’s saying she might have said “yes” or gone along without protest but she really meant no.
Those of you who think Ben is such a pervert, please tell me: If a drunken woman you’ve been with all evening seems to willingly have sex with you without arguing, how do you know she’s not giving consent?
Ben may be an arrogant jackass who thinks he’s God’s gift to women. He may be a complete moron who learned nothing from his previous trouble and continues to put himself in precarious situations. He may be a dog trying to chase Wilt Chamberlain’s record of conquests. But we can’t label him a pervert rapist until we see evidence that he actually raped someone.

False allegations are a HELL of a lot more common than you politically correct types are willing to admit. In my mind, Roethlisberger is not guilty until proven otherwise in a court of law. 3. Don’t control the photo ops of adoring fans. Let them snap away, so its all part of the public record.
    4. Keep your hands on the bar or a table or a drink at all times. Hands traveling to any other target are unacceptable.
Following these simple rules, it should be easy enough to enjoy the nightlife, “intermingle” as they say with the girls, have a few drinks, and get out safe and not under legal investigation. Enjoy your millions, Ben. Use it for good, not for evil.

The tone of the article was that Rothlisberger was a fool to be in “a situation” where something like this could happen. Problem is, anytime an NFL superstar QB goes out to “have all the fun he wants” as you say he should be able to do, that will always create a potential “situation”. So, apparently, the only way to avoid such chances is to NEVER go out and stay sheltered at home.
By the way….they still haven’t said he stuck his “weenie” anywhere, just that there was a claim of sexual assault (which could be in other forms instead of P in V) and sexual manipulation ( never heard that one before….I don’t know, it sounds so…..technical)

If you’re a criminal defense attorney, obviously you’d know more about this, but–while it may vary slightly by state–my understanding is that admissibility (forgive the typo) is limited to convictions, or at the least, prosecutions. Ben has never been prosecuted or convicted of sexual assault. In fact, he’s never had a criminal charge of sexual assault, or until now even been the subject of a criminal investigation for sexual assault. I don’t believe accusations of prior bad acts are admissible.

History shows that Ben is a jerk. He may even be a criminal. Hell, he even wears his hat backwards. Dennis Dixon took the Ravens into overtime on the road. Give him the job. I’ve officially had it with Ben.

I’ve never been a fan of little ben stinkburger. I’ve watched his behavior on the field the constant drama with his hurt back, hip, and on and on. His sitting on his duff all game so he can do his last 2 min win the game theatrics, his constant whining to the refs.
Now hearing that he just might not be a choir boy is no surprise.
If he behaves badly off the field he has plenty of company, most of whom come form the NFL. Is he a rapist doubt we will ever know the truth. Maybe all this Tiger, little ben and all the other bad boys will finally get people to think about who they deem are heroes, so far its the creeps 1000 real heroes well – who knows.

Just because Joe Flaccid sits home and pounds his pud doesn’t mean everyone else should. Being cocky and arrogant does not make you a rapist. And as for the religious whiner, does it really make you a satan worshipper by wearing a shirt with a devil on it? Tell that to all the Duke Blue Devil fans and the NJ Devil fans. I have written many MANY times notes about Ben. He seems to have a God complex and believes every woman is just dying to be with him. Well Ben that’s not the case. You are the QB of the team I have held on a pedestal for 40 years! I yell when they win and actually cry sometimes when they lose. However Ben, please stop and think about life. That motorcycle accident was a sign SCREAMING out to you. Your own Mother died in a car accident. I am so ashamed of you. You host some wrestling event and wear a t-shirt that read “cash”. Now you wear one that shows the devil. Something is definitely wrong with you and you need help. Maybe the justice system will give it to you. Anyone think we can bring back Tommy Maddox? I’d rather take my chances with him. Lord help us if we get Mike Vick. I’ll never watch another Steeler game if that happens too.

  154. Holeinone09 says: Mar 6, 2010 5:48 PM

I am a life long Steeler fan, being originally from the Pittsburgh area. I absolutely love what Ben has done as QB; he is by far the best we have had since Bradshaw and is one of the best in the league today overall.
And yes I hate hearing a story like this, about any of our players.
However, I for one do not consider any athlete a hero or a perfect person. I enjoy what they do in their sport and marvel at how they excell at what they do. They have some special skill that I don’t have. But I don’t kid myself that they are a better person than you or I. In fact, because of many factors, some that should be obvious and some not so obvious, i would rather think that most athletes are relative idiots compared to most other regular people like you or me. They should not be “idolized”, but should be appreciated for what their talent allows them to do on the field of play.
I did consider Ben at one point to be more along the lines of a decent person. I have read on the internet about his so-called boorish behavior, but since nobody can ever show a link or point to some quote somewhere (ie they “heard” about it), then to me it is heresay. But after this, I have reservations and have to see how this shakes out. At the very least he clearly needs a lesson in proper behavior in public. I sure don’t think he raped anybody. I do think there probably was a lot of drinking and a lot of flirting, etc. He needs to understand he is constantly under scrutiny whereever he goes. But, if he did indeed do something criminal, then he should pay the price just like anybody else, just like you or me. Believe me, the Steelers would continue to exist with or without Ben. And I as a fan would cheer for them regardless of whether Ben was the QB or not.
It seems like Ben needs to take some counseling lessons or needs to draw the line somewhere with his behavior in public. He should have better mentors. At this point, he needs to do well in football and do what he can to stay out of the non-sports headlines.
As to the many slack-jawed yokels here who have chastised Steeler fans for blindly adoring their team, I think many of us proved you wrong. While we have at least as much passion for our team as any one of you, we don’t want a criminal on our team. If he is convicted of a crime, he should be appropriately punished. So far, he has not been charged, and seems to only be guilty of moronic behavior in public for someone of his stature.
How many current pro football team do not have at least one player that has not been charged with some type of crime, whether it be drunk driving, assault and battery, whatever? Sounds like a lot of hypocrits to me out there. A few years ago, wasn’t there about 7 or 8 Bengals players charged with something within a one year period? How about the Vikes and the boat sex incident? Oh yeah, you all forgot about those.
Hey Ben, GET YOUR DAMN ACT TOGETHER BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE FOR YOU HAVE AN ACT.
    GO STEELERS!

    @TrytheVeal …
No, I don’t believe players can do what they want as long as they win.
Because of my experiences with rape survivors, I always assumed women making these accusations were telling the truth. Then through my brother’s criminal defense work, I learned details of many cases where there was no question the women had lied–and sometimes for really trivial reasons. I thought about how hard it is to tell a rape story in public wondered how any woman could put herself through that when it’s not true. But that’s the answer: When it’s not true, it’s not torture to tell.
It took a long time for me to adopt a “wait and see” attitude. We’ve seen from the material presented in court filings that Ms. McNulty’s story doesn’t add up. Now we’ll have to wait and see whether there’s merit to these accusations.
Regardless, I’m disappointed that Ben wasn’t wise enough to adjust his lifestyle after the first incident–and I’m frustrated that the Steelers weren’t more proactive in counseling him. But being an immature jerk and womanizer are not criminal offenses. And being an egomaniac isn’t uncommon among professional athletes. That’s not a reason to fire or jail him. We’ve got to stick with what can be proved and not what we think.
I said the same about Michael Irvin and I can’t stand the Cowboys.

Come on Squeeler Nation! Where there’s smoke there’s what? For being someone who passionately hates the Squeelers and unfortunately has to live in Squeeler Nation, I will definately tell you that you do blindly love your players. If it was any other player from a different team you would be all down their throats. Gee… I remember Romo getting slammed for DATING celebrities but still being called Tony Homo. We’ll see who the homo is when Rapistberger gets sent to prison and has to make sure not to drop the soap.
I for one have ran into Rapistberger a couple of times and know that he is not the friendliest of players. I am not ripping on just Squeeler players here cause I know that Lynn Swann is a great guy to all his fans and will take all the time in the world to sign autographs to all his fans… and be cheery at the same time. I have known Rapistberger to walk into crowded restaurants and think that someone was going to give up their seat for him cause he is God’s gift to Football. Luckily no one did! I know that his bodyguards are just as much of A-Holes as he is. I know of Rapistberger going into strip clubs with his bodyguards giving nothing but attitude towards the security guards there. He apparently doesn’t know how to act right, and his negativity spreads. I know of Joey Galloway going into strip clubs keeping low key and not making a big scene as he does. Joey will just give money to his buddies to blow as he sits at the bar playing the touch screen games.
Look people! You can believe me or not but let’s not forget everything that went on a little over 10 years ago with President Clinton. President Clinton is one of my favorite Presidents of all time. Let’s not forget that after having a half dozen women accusing the President of being sexually and professionally”inappropriate” (to say the least)to them, he was then slammed with Monica Lewinsky.
I know that there are women out there that are looking to make a buck by crying wolf and giving the real women who go through shameful things a bad name. It’s been going on for YEARS people! But he should know he is going to be a target! He can be a A-Hole all he wants and be on a team that I dispise more than any, but let’s start using some common sense here.
It’s like dating a girl that everyone is telling you to stay away from. You don’t want to listen to them because she is “different” to you, but everyone keeps on talking. If enough people say this guy is a douche then there must be some truth to the matter.

Questions go out as to why would someone with of his nature (being an NFL Super Bowl winning QB) assault(and/or rape) women. Especially, considering how most Super Bowl winning QBs don’t get accused of rape twice a year, if ever. Why do people naturally rape or are sexual predators. Any Sociologist or Psychologist will tell you that people don’t rape because they are horny, or can’t get any. People rape for the sense of ‘power’. They like to be totally in control. They like the feeling of power in order to feel competant. Now….not to get into all sorts of psychobabble. It’s been ‘written on the walls’ that Ben has a power complex. Much, I’m sure, like Michael Vick. Though Vick had “thug life tatted on his chest” as Tupac would say, and thought he could get away with profiling ghetto life through dog fighting(at a very high multi-million dollar level). Ben has a power complex. Apparently, he tunnels that incompetency through the obsession of women. Why does Ben Roethlisberger, and his bodyguard goons, need to go out to college bars anyways? Who is he really needing to prove his high status to?He was cocky in college and, evidentally, it grew to enormous heights when he got into the NFL and ‘fell’ into the right football team system and won a couple of Super Bowl rings (no thanks to his 22.9 QB rating in the first Super Bowl). The man thinks he’s God’s gift to Football and to practically everyone who walks this Earth. That’s ok, it will all catch up to him….ask Michael Vick.

    @AmericasTeam60 …
You don’t give a damn about no meaning no. You just want to rag on Steeler fans. So far there isn’t one shred of evidence that Ben Roethlisberger failed to respect the word “no.” His first accuser bragged to friends about wanting to have sex with him and later said she hoped she was pregnant. The only thing we know about this case is when asked, the police said: It wasn’t “rape,” it was “sexual manipulation”–which implies coercion.
No doesn’t = No, as I giggle and and kiss you all over.
No = No, as I push, struggle, argue, wrestle, hit, scratch, scream, plead, or do SOMETHING to demonstrate I DON’T WANT THIS.

  175. AmericasTeam60 says: Mar 6, 2010 10:51 PM

I’m talking about the newest accusation Deb! Apparently, he was told no whenever he had to make his way into the womens restroom after the girl. He evidently has no ‘game’ and can’t just let the girls come to him, if he has so much confidence for being who he is.
Either he doesn’t know the word no or he is hearing the word yes from the wrong people. He’s not that smart of a character if he puts himself into certain situations as such.
thanks for commenting on the one comment that I made that was two sentences long and was apparently filled with sarcasm there DEB!…oops Deb. Fine! you made your point. Don’t make yourself seem too intellectual by dissecting a two sentence statement. :-/

  176. Deb says: Mar 6, 2010 11:02 PM

Actually, AmericasTeam60, I read all your diatribes, but was most offended by the “no means no” idiocy because, as I said, we all know you don’t give a damn about rape victims and that’s not why you’re here.
You don’t know anything about what he was told or where in the club this incident took place because that hasn’t been released. The police said multiple locations in the club were considered a crime scene. The “restroom” thing is a rumor and nothing has been said to indicate he was told no when he tried to enter. Nice try, though.
I’m not trying to make myself seem intellectual. As someone who’s spent time with a lot of rape survivors, I’m offended at a jackass making of “no means no, Ben” to take shots a football fans he doesn’t like. I think you’re a small person getting off on someone else’s troubles.

At worst, Roethlisberger is a rapist. Are you using “entitlement” as a euphemism, or has your coverage of the NFL blinded you to the fact that NFL players live in this world. A “concept of consent”? Ben may have more than conceptual difficulties.
And you don’t live in Pittsburgh nor do you know anything about the people in the city, so your comment regarding the people of Pittsburgh who “blindly adore him” is offensive and ignorant. As a Steeler fan I agree with everything in this post but one. Ben is losing ground with the people in the Burgh fast. The callers on sports radio for the most part are crucifying him as, at best, a dumb ass and, at worst, an abuser of women with a sense of entitlement. Those are extreme examples but you get the point.
I also take issue with the babysitters (body guards) who did not say anything to him (or apparently not enough) about the possibility that he was putting himself in a precarious position. They should have known better too. Ben’s reputation in Pittsburgh is one of courtesy and politeness. I’m beginning to wonder if when he’s had a few drinks he forgets that he’s a high profile individual and does whatever the hell he wants.

Thanks, Deb, for the intelligent explanations. On this board, it is appreciated! There does seem to be a rush to judge him…”where’s there is smoke…” and nice to see some restraint.
My questions are: if this did happen, where are witnesses? Why on earth did his bodyguards let this happen, if it did? So far we have 1 woman saying he did something to her, whatever “manipulation” means? Grab a titty? We have witness that says he came in and signed autographs and bought drinks and night was uneventful. So where is truth? Was Ben groping his way through bar or just wrong place/wrong time?
As for Florio and his comment about Steelers fans being blind to this…well, what do you expect from an ambulance chaser? When his PFT days are done, he can go back to advertising on late night tv for clients that have lost loved ones in nursing homes, been the victim of age discrimination, slpped on a grape in grocery store or spilled hot coffee on lap. When I try and picture him practicing law, and I use the term loosely, I think of Sean Penn in Carlito’s Way.

From the report about the alleged attack: “She described her attacker as 6’5′ 241 lbs”. Really, 241 lbs? His exact stats listed with the NFL? She eyeballed that, or did he jump on the scale before he raped her?
It might as well have said: “She described her attacker as 6’5″ 241 lbs, 2 superbowl rings, and with a career passer rating of 91.7″.

Capt James T Kirk – it’s been reported that the alleged incident happened in the ladies’ room. He allegedly went in there after she did.
Although some of us are withholding judgement, the “why on earth did his bodyguards let this happen?” question shouldn’t be brought up. Ben’s a grown man responsible for his own actions. Besides, he hired them to protect him against others, not the other way around.
I think one question that should be asked is why would woman risk being arrested for underage-drinking if she didn’t feel strongly about her allegation?

It should be clear to everyone reading these bloggo-style comments that those who hate the amazing Steeler legacy (lost to us too often, especially in playoff games) are licking their chops with this story. Whether you like the Steelers, or, not, whether you like Big Ben, or, not, keep in mind that there is no specific law against stupidity. If he continues to HO around, he will continue to get HO-sed by them who HO and the media will prevail with implicative and ambiguous stories that skirt the truth and elude to supposed wrong-doings. Judge not, so it goes. therefore, all those who are assuming the worst may be in for a surprise when they stand before the pearly gates. Either way, when Big Ben gets to those gates, it will be his scorecard that will be the determing factor for his eternal team assignment.

Even with Big Ben,Being that there are two different incidences might substainiate that there is a problem of sorts with Ben,But the flip side is that its possible these Woman, get famous for being molested, and they could be looking for an easy Buck too,Personally I don’t think he’s that bad of a person to do things of this nature,Even outside of the fact he’s a Quarterback for a well known Franchise, would lead everyone to believe he is Arrogant,But what I can see of him while playing, leads me to believe that he’s not the Person in question,Of course thats my Opinion, and everyone has those!!and yes just like A**holes.everyone has one!!
But I’m sure it will comeout that he’s innocent, and these Woman are looking for a Fastbuck.

Good call on 193, if the count is still accurate as I write this I would be post 191 so you are very close.
As for the potential charge, nobody here has any idea of what really happened in this situation. Could he have done it? Sure it is possible. Could he have had consensual sex with her and treated her like she was just another girl in a bar and not someone he would even remember in a week? Sure it is possible. We don’t know and we never will. Unfortunately there are too many people who see famous people as an opportunity for themselves to cash in. These people make others doubt any allegation involving a famous person.
My opinion of what is most likely to have happened since this post is basically just Florio giving us his. I think Ben probably either had sex or did something with this girl but afterwards didn’t treat her like she was anything special. This caused her to get upset and try to get back at him so she made these allegations.

Hello Steelers fans. Can any of you answer these questions?
Why do we not hear about other NFL players having this same trouble?
    Only Ben is a target?
How are the other single NFL quarterbacks finding women to date and not being accused of sexual assault?
How did Tom Brady date one super model and then another that he eventually married, but Ben can’t get himself a girlfriend? Hmm?
You know what the real reason is? Ben finds his way into trouble and that trouble finds it’s way into the news. Now there’s going to be another visit to the team and an apology and then another press conference where he declares his innocence. Another incident that has the media questioning other players about Ben and the incident.
It’s an embarrassment to the team. Again. Unless, of course, you have a better answer. But, I haven’t seen that better answer.

If anything was involved between them, she is probably the one that did the persuing. There ought to be laws that keep these type of women from trying to harass famous men. Including that bunch of burn-outs that accused Tiger Woods.

    ______________________________
Really. She’s not been identified and she contacted police immediately. Maybe you’d like to answer my questions?
I did say “where there’s smoke …..” and the fact is, Ben seems quite able to make news in this fashion where no other quarterbacks are able. Now it’s twice that he’s been accused of something and he will have to meet with his team and apologize privately and then also have to have a press conference where he strongly denies having done anything wrong. Again.
This is a distraction for the team. Ben will be hounded by reporters all asking the same questions about a possible sexual assault. Maybe, as was mentioned by Florio, Ben does have this “entitlement” attitude. Young, single, having lots of money and having two Super Bowl rings and no girlfriend. He’s not a “playa”?
He’s hanging out with young college girls looking for what exactly? Well, maybe he was looking for trouble and found it. Maybe the girl didn’t appreciate his bold and untoward behavior. Maybe the girl was violated in a way that is considered sexual assault when it’s forced on an unwilling participant. The fact is, you don’t know. Ben does and so does the young college woman. The fact is, she filed a police complaint and went to the hospital directly after her contact with Ben.

By your own admission, you hate Steeler fans and like to rag on them. I wouldn’t have commented on your other diatribes. Dawn is right that it’s been reported the assault took place in the restroom, but take that with a grain of salt. In the only statements they’ve issued, the authorities said multiple areas of the club were considered a crime scene and that the assault was not rape but “sexual manipulation.”
My first thought on hearing that was it might be something akin to digital rape. Then I heard someone use the word “coercion” and thought it must mean she was too drunk to give consent. However, my brother is a criminal defense attorney in Alabama. He told me this a.m. that in Alabama “too drunk to consent” would be a rape charge–but fondling would be charged as “sexual abuse” and could include digital rape or grabbing of breast, crotch, buttocks, etc. So it’s possible that’s what Georgia means by “sexual manipulation.”

  207. Deb says: Mar 7, 2010 3:37 PM

    @Paul_R …
You do hear about other athletes having these problems. It may be an assault complaint–or it may be multiple baby mamas. I once heard NBA players saying they’d caught women fishing used condoms out of the trash in hopes of using them to get pregnant so they’d be set for life.
But no, you don’t hear about this happening to players who go home to their wives every night or to those who date famous women who have their own money. You only hear about it with idiots who troll bars every night getting wasted and hitting on anything female and breathing.
Even if Ben’s not guilty of assault, he’s guilty of letting down himself, his employers, his team, and his fans by making himself an easy target.

It will be interesting to see even if Roethlisberger is cleared of all wrongdoing beyond the shadow of any doubt how many people will make the same sort of jokes and comments about Roethlisberger as they have about Ray Lewis. I have a lot of work to do today, so I’m just going to paste part of my reply last night to your sister-in-kind Amy Wilmer:
“‘No woman with my background would knowingly defend a serial assaulter for any reason. And I would never condone or defend Ben Roethlisberger’s indiscriminate sexual behavior nor his cavalier treatment of women nor his sheer stupidity in not learning to be more wary of casual encounters. He has done unimaginable harm to himself, his family, his employers, his teammates, and his fans with his selfishness and immaturity. But thus far that’s the only evidence against him. It’s unfortunate that you find a woman committed to due process pathetic and a poor role model.”
“[T]he police have said this was not a rape, so apparently it’s some kind of grabbing, groping, or similar molestation. I was victimized like that by an adult when I was 14. And while I realize you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed, it might have occurred to you that I’ve spent all that time with rape survivors because I’ve also been there, done that. I know you probably don’t consider being raped as traumatic as having your daughter called a ‘bitch,’ but–believe it or not–it would keep me from defending a man if it were proved he’d assaulted someone. The keyword there is ‘proved.'”
It’s a serious subject. I take it seriously. I don’t believe in lynching a man without evidence. I felt the same way about Michael Irvin, and I can’t stand the Cowboys. And I don’t give damn what you geniuses think.

He started off as a humble hard working young palyer but his entitled behavior has been going on for a long time and getting him in trouble over and over again. You would think that from the first allegations (and the motorcycle accident) he would realize that he should get it together and keep it in his pants until he is married or in a long term committed relationship. Mike you got this one right, sometimes I don’t always agree with you but on this one you are right on! 228. Deb says: Mar 8, 2010 2:06 PM

Incidentally, Reba, other Steelers fans warned me when I first began posting on PFT that you are deeply disturbed. Your hope that I’ll be viciously attacked for advocating due process bears that out. But on the off chance that you are simply run-of-the-mill nuts and capable of basic reading comprehension, you might want to visit the Web site of the Innocence Project.
(You do know how to google, right? It’s hard to be sure since you don’t know any details about the Nevada civil suit against Roethlisberger … for instance that there are sworn affidavits that the accuser bragged about having sex with him and wanting to become impegnated, that her own text messages conflict with her timeline of events, that her hospitalizations stemmed from another relationship, and that she was in financial trouble at the time she filed her $3 million lawsuit.)
Anyway, the home page of the Innocent Project features the story of an 18-year-old convicted of rape in 1982. He was cleared by DNA in 2002. Unfortunately, that’s not an isolated situation.
I’m not soft on crime, particularly where sex offenders are concerned. But I would like to make sure we’re filling our limited prison space with people who are truly dangers to society rather than just those who are obnoxious in bars. If we arrested people just for being obnoxious, you’d already be locked up.

There was no tape of O.J lopping 2 peoples heads off does that mean he is innocent also? Most people with any common sense at all can tell you where there is smoke there is usually a fire.I also notice you seem to keep ignoring the fact that YOU DO have a murderer on your team at wide receiver but I was not in Miami that morning so he must be innocent as well right?Being a fan is one thing being an ignorant myopic human is another.Tell the mother of the man from Akron,Ohio that had her sons throat slashed in Atlanta that night that he is innocent..or is Ray out looking for the real killer like the Juice because last time I checked NOBODY has ever been charged with his murder but your boy the psycho pre-game dancer. No I was not there but he was!

    Hey Florio:
I always see people slamming you for your blogs. I never have until today.
If Tiger were single, as Roethlisberger is, he would be “entitled” to have consensual sex with as many people as he wanted to have sex with.
What is with people’s fascination with other people’s sex lives?
I’m a big Steeler fan. The Steeler players have never all been angels. They never will be all angels.
I’m not going to waste my time wondering what Ray Lewis or Ben Roethlisberger did or didn’t do.
I pull for and against the uniform.
I will pull for whomever is wearing the Black & Gold next year. I will boo the team they are playing that week. Period.
^^How can u pull for the Saints (black and gold), when ur a Steeler fan? Smh…
So how long before this idiot enrolls in a clinic for everyone’s new favorite illness, “sexual addiction”?

As a female, die hard Steelers fan Big Ben is the reason I am a devout Polamalu fan. Now there’s a class act man.
If Ben wants to be like Tiger he needs to pick up golf clubs and get the hell out of Pittsburgh. From a drama queen to a reckless imbecile. When are the Roneys and Tomlin going to whip him into shape. I can’t believe that they are letting him destory the name of the only NFL team w/ 6 Super Bowls. I say he goes and goes now so Batch and the others have time to become a great QB. Ben has pissed me off this time. He needs to sit his A** down somewhere and see what he really has in front of him and to leave this crap alone. Men and women alike can bar hop and never encounter or cause such friction as he does. He needs to remeber the saying” Pride be fallest a man”. And Ben has a long way to fall……..Hope he has his helmet on but then again I hope he doesn’t. I guess the Tiger incident hasn’t opened his eyes any.

I went to high school with Roethlisberger. Trust me, the guy’s a total prick. I once saw him throw an Icee on a younger kid for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Guy’s a prick.

    @vivaknievel …
Thanks … I’m laughing so hard I can hardly type, and there isn’t much to laugh about in this story.
When I was a freshmen in high school a senior slapped the bottom of my Coke while I was taking a sip at the Homecoming game and drenched my whole outfit. I was shy lil thing back then so my friend was stunned when I grabbed her drink before she could react and threw it on his back. Yeah, I thought he was a total prick, too.
    Doesn’t make him a rapist.
