Jets trade Kerry Rhodes to Cardinals

Kerry Rhodes is on the move.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the New York Jets have traded Rhodes to the Arizona Cardinals for a fourth-round pick this year and a seventh-round pick next year.

For the Cardinals, they pick up a safety a day after Antrel Rolle signed with the New York Giants. For the Jets, they get rid of a safety who was unhappy with his role in the defense in 2009.

The trade comes just a day after Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum told reporters that Rhodes will receive his $2 million roster bonus on March 12 and be on the team for the 2010 season. General managers don’t always tell the truth.

General managers don’t always tell the truth. ….seriously??…I don’t think many do anymore!

  2. drumbug71 says: Mar 6, 2010 7:05 PM

    Isn’t Rhodes pretty good? Seems like a 4th and a 7th is a small price to pay….

  3. Augustus says: Mar 6, 2010 7:08 PM

    Just a terrible, terrible trade.

  4. Sanchez4Prez says: Mar 6, 2010 7:08 PM

    That’s it? 4 and a 7?

  5. Carlos A. says: Mar 6, 2010 7:09 PM

Haha Yea baby!! I knew the front office would respond agressively after losing Rolle. We’ll get Rhodes at a fraction of what the Giants paid for Rolle and with our defense he’ll outperform Rolle in 2010. Cards 1 – Giants 0

  6. nyjshane88 says: Mar 6, 2010 7:10 PM

Another stupid move by my favorite team. I understand the logic, hes a diva and didnt produce at all most of last season. That being said, he has a world of talent, and they have nobody to replace him. They’ll prob reach for a safety now in the draft even though a pass rusher is more important. Also, nice job getting nothing in return when if you traded him yesterday you prob could have gotten Boldin.

  7. Carlos A. says: Mar 6, 2010 7:14 PM

Cardinals 1 – Giants 0. We’re getting Rhodes at a franction of what Rolle costed the Giants and he’ll outperform Rolle in 2010. Thanks Cards Org for being patiant, next up, Larry Foote, let’s get it done.

  8. Caldon says: Mar 6, 2010 7:15 PM

Of course, click through a few times and the actual quote from the GM ends with “unless something changes”.
Note to Kerry Rhodes, something changed

  9. FireJerryJones says: Mar 6, 2010 7:21 PM

Wow. How bad an off-season can the Cardinals have?
Lose three of your key starters, then give up two draft picks for a guy the Jets were going to cut.

  10. DeeDubb says: Mar 6, 2010 7:25 PM

Wow what a steal! I’d take Rhodes over Rolle anyday of the week.

  11. Hooby says: Mar 6, 2010 7:30 PM

and….the eagles (with a blaring hole at safety) remain stalwart in their quest to bring nobody in to philly. in fact, theyve signed negative people if you count westbrook and witherspoon.
reid better be waiting to make a huge move or im gonna be pissed.

  12. Bill In DC says: Mar 6, 2010 7:33 PM

OR he told the truth, from a certain point of view….

  13. promin1 says: Mar 6, 2010 7:35 PM

Rhodes sucks. Cards lost on this one.

  14. NYJETSareNYSBEST says: Mar 6, 2010 7:39 PM

Not the best move by us especially because he’s worth way more than a 4th and a 7th pick. However, now we can go after Darren Sharper! Lets go Mike Tannenbaum make it happen.

  15. DustinColquitt says: Mar 6, 2010 7:39 PM

Very cheap price for one of the better safeties in the league. I’d actually prefer Rhodes to Antrel Rolle if I were a Cardinals fan.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen….and this guy was the NFL’s highest paid safety like two years ago.
for a four and a freaking seven.
    Should have kept him.

  18. stevemcguigan says: Mar 6, 2010 7:45 PM

    Very dry, MDS
Rhodes is a downgrade from Rolle but at least they’re making moves to plug the leaks.

  19. Ravensfankiller says: Mar 6, 2010 7:45 PM

Stupid. Jets should of traded straight up for Boldin unless they are going after Marshall.

  20. moe says: Mar 6, 2010 7:52 PM

    this saddens me

  21. madsqgrdn says: Mar 6, 2010 7:57 PM

Kerry was soft from time to time but when they tried to bench him eric smith got exposed , Im sure they have another safety in mind …they are smarter than I am …aren’t they?

  22. Kanesville says: Mar 6, 2010 8:08 PM

Kerry Rhodes and Adrian Wilson? Hell of a tandem right there.

  23. nobodybeatsdawiz says: Mar 6, 2010 8:14 PM

lose antrel gain kerry rhodes….the cards with a-dub and rhodes….hard pressed to find a team with two better starting safeties

  24. recent says: Mar 6, 2010 8:28 PM

they try to take one step forward in the secondary, but just took a bigger step back. Trading Vilma hurt Rhodes, I remember reading that Vilma brought Kerry over every night to watch film for hours and study together, and seemed like after Vilma left, Rhodes lost some of the work ethic that helped him have his big season. If he focuses on football, this is going to look like a terrible trade for the jets (already looks bad).

  25. bspurloc says: Mar 6, 2010 9:05 PM

the jets owner is a godamn idiot……

  26. mrJets says: Mar 6, 2010 9:07 PM

as a Jets fan. i dont like the trade. because i dont see them signing of drafting a safety as good as, or better than Rhodes…..and damn! only a 4th & a 7th round pick…..i bet they somehow package those picks to move up in the draft.

  27. juan likkmeekak says: Mar 6, 2010 9:15 PM

this trade sucks! all the jets needed was a pass rusher, and they were gonna dominate….now they have another hole to fill, with a late 4th round pick? straight up stupid move………..unless trader mike has something else up his sleeve

  28. punyandy says: Mar 6, 2010 9:15 PM

Kerry Rhodes was the worst tackling safety in the league. Hardly a good fit for Rex Ryan. Will never forget Kerry Rhodes in the fetal position as small Darren Sproles was running at him in the SD/NYJ playoff game. As a Jets fan, this is great news.

  29. tacious says: Mar 6, 2010 9:49 PM

Not so thrilled about only getting a 4th and 7th for Kerry Rhodes; however, as far as drafting in the 4th round goes, Tanny has been nothing short of a genius over the past few years:
    Leon Washington
    Jericho Cotchery
    Brad Smith
    and, ironically, Kerry Rhodes
I’ll give him and Rex the benefit of the doubt on this one, as I believe they know what they want and what they’re doing.
I’m just really glad that that bitch ass pussy Rhodes is off the Jets roster; good riddance!

  30. darkchild says: Mar 6, 2010 9:58 PM

I’m convinced the majority of you commenting haven’t watched Kerry Rhodes. The guy is soft as hell and he CANT TACKLE TO SAVE HIS LIFE. He’s also a DIVA with an inflated sense of self worth. He keeps referring to himself as an All Pro player but he’s never even made 1 pro Bowl much less an All Pro Team.Kerry Rhodes was benched for Eric Smith for crying out loud.
Rhodes is more intersted in the Hollywood lifestyle/being a model than he is in playing Football. He doesnt hit hard ( or hit period) because he’s worried about how it will affect his Movie career further down the line.
The Cardinals can have him he’s not very good.

There we go Cards! Great response after a forgettable Friday. Rhodes is certainly an upgrade, particularly in coverage, and should take better angles in pass defense than Rolle did last season. And that addition will especially help Adrian Wilson who is a liability in pass coverage… Rolle was chosen 8th overall in 2006, and has become a solid pro who still has an upside, and is a sure open field tackler with above average speed at safety. He saved a lot of running backs from breaking it big last season… As for the Cardinals, with a late first, second, 2 third choices, & a now only one fourth this April I’m feeling better about next season and another good draft that has become a staple of the Whisenhunt/Graves regime.

  32. funi says: Mar 6, 2010 11:16 PM

Toilet Rolle will be out of N.Y in 3 years! He covers like crap and gives up on too many plays!

  33. dhrodgers52 says: Mar 6, 2010 11:40 PM

Awful deal…the Jets got more ripped off than the Cards did in the Boldin trade…
Absolutely ridiculous trade…what in the hell were they thinking…
A day after they solidify the secondary with Cromartie they trade away a top 10 safety? Son of a gun…they better use that fourth round magic to fill the void…

  34. simonb says: Mar 7, 2010 12:13 AM

i am assuminngggggggg (hoping) ryan saw someone at the combine he really likes that will be a lower pick.
either than, or they will trade all their picks in this years draft to trade up to snatch mays or berry

  35. mrzazz41387 says: Mar 7, 2010 1:24 AM

Kerry is soft, and was in the wrong system in NY. The Jets were prob going to cut him, but instead got a 4 and a 7. Eric Smith is a little smaller, but he plays with 10 times as much heart as Kerry. The game Kerry got benched, Eric came in and did great. Kerry was just being paid way to much to be sitting on the bench. Now you guys can pay him way too much to be soft.

  36. Adam says: Mar 7, 2010 5:12 AM

    Rhodes isn’t very good.
Why do you think the Jets couldn’t get better than a 4th and a 7th?
Im thinkin Jets draft a S in2nd or 3rd round, and sign Sharper for this year.
Jets #1 need in my opinion is
WR. Take Golden Tate in the first, we got Cromartie, so no 1st or 2nds to spend on CBs.

  37. BroncoBourque says: Mar 7, 2010 8:37 AM

Probably a good deal for both sides. The Cardinals got a decent safety with the potential to a be a very good player when he applies himself. After losing Rolle this was a good response just giving up a 4 and a 7, since it is not likely they would have been able to fill that starting spot with either one of those picks. For the Jets they get something for a guy they probably would have cut if they couldn’t find a trade partner so a 4 and a 7 is better than nothing.

  38. Sanchez4Prez says: Mar 7, 2010 9:25 AM

Atogwe from the RAMS will be the next JETS move. Iron Mike’s working on some crafty “poison pill” contract that can’t be matched by St. Louis. It will cost the JETS…….nothing! Just money, no picks. I’m sure Woody can sell a few more bandaids to afford him.

  39. jetters149 says: Mar 7, 2010 11:08 AM

    good trade

  40. dwatkins says: Mar 7, 2010 12:56 PM

Funny the Jets fans talking about how bad of a tackler Rhodes is, right after signing Cromartie

  41. danlinker says: Mar 7, 2010 1:02 PM

Cards got the better of this deal by far. All this hype about Rolle is just that. He was good, but not great. And he wanted to make more than AW? Please.
Rhodes is an upgrade at a much lesser cost. And he will have something to prove. LOVE IT.

  42. jeje says: Mar 7, 2010 9:28 PM

Rhodes sucks… he is just a big name player he did nothing at all this year thats why eric smith was starting over him. rhodes was going to demand a trade out of ny any way Tannenbaum did the smart move

  43. Robj says: Mar 9, 2010 2:03 PM

FYI: Kerry Rhodes is NOT one of the best defensive backs in football.
A 4th and a 7th (for a team that drafts very well) is more than adequate.
Much like Thomas Jones before him, Kerry was on his way to becoming a high-priced backup.
Rex Ryan is making this team his own, and after the way he coached that Jets D and a rookie QB to overachieve and almost make the Superbowl, I don’t mind.
