"Signs look good" for Carr deal in San Francisco

The improbable David Carr sweepstakes may begin and end with the 49ers.

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Carr’s agent is talking contract with San Francisco Saturday evening.  “Signs look good” for Carr to complete a deal.

Carr, who also has received interest from the Cardinals and Browns, left the 49ers facility without speaking to reporters as promised Saturday, possibly because he didn’t want to answer questions about Patrick Willis’ welcome-to-town tweets.

Willis may get a chance to express his feelings to Carr in more than 140 characters soon enough.

David Carr retires after being brought in to be a camp arm.

this makes perfect sense, seeing as how the Niners are one washed up 3rd string qb away from a superbowl

congrats, now they have 2 HORRIBLE #1 picks.
what are they going for – the most money ever wasted since Ryan ‘don’t touch me’ LEAF

Am I the only one in the world who thinks David Carr is underrated?
He was an average QB on a REALLY bad team for the early part of his career. Not exactly Joey Harrington or Tim Couchesque. Considerably better than Alex Smith even.
I don’t see why he can’t be a good QB on a decent team elsewhere.

    Superbowl.

Ouch. Can you say “uneasy tension in the locker room”, Patrick Willis?

David Carr must have a great agent. Why anyone wants him is beyond me. He’s a poser, and has been exposed multiple times.

Carr completed 64% of his passes last year and didn’t throw a single pick. The dude has a pretty good arm – people just talk bad about him because he got sacked so often.
I dunno if he can beat out Alex Smith, but it wouldn’t shock me if he did. Between Josh Morgan and Crabtree, whoever starts in San Fran is going to have some good weapons to work with…

What was the last team to have two overall #1 draft picks at QB on their roster? I can’t recall one but maybe others might.

  11. pocket says: Mar 6, 2010 10:54 PM

Or a camp arm to force either alex smith or shaun hill out of town, i think he might be a little more polished than shaun hill and since he has been moved around, this being his 4th team coming from 2 back up roles, he has learned humility and so has his wallet. I think he has a shot at taking the number one spot, but most likely its going to be a 3 year deal, give alex smith more competition or could be a non costly number 3 as well.

Willis will have to get over it… as a Niners fan, Carr doesn’t excite me, but he’s not Micheal Vick… Vick wasn’t a good QB his last few years in Atlanta, but it doesn’t stop players from defending him, or seeing him as something he’s not

  13. danlinker says: Mar 6, 2010 11:43 PM

Good, sign him quick. Don’t want him in AZ.

  14. RaiderhateR4Life says: Mar 6, 2010 11:46 PM

Carr isn’t gunna say anything about Willis’ comment, would you?

David Carr is better than any QB San Fran presently has on the roster……. Why not?

David Carr is a better QB than anyone other on the 49ers roster, someone who can throw the ball over 15yards, their not signing “camp arms” at this stage of free agency, GOSH!!!!

just what we need another backup QB !!

  19. zllabnkcoc says: Mar 7, 2010 2:23 AM

Now the 9ers have two useless former No. 1 draft picks at QB. What they need to do is lose a lot of games this year and get Jake Locker in the draft next year. With somebody capable under centre it could be a good team.

Signs look good for 49′er fans having to settle for more mediocrity.

In all fairness to David Carr, his career started on a terrible Texan team, and he got beat up more every game than a MMA fighter. When he landed with the Giants, he did pretty well when called upon. He probably doesn’t have much left gas in his tank to be a starter/savior for the 49ers, but he’s not going to hurt them. I’m sorry the Giants let him go.

  22. stiles22 says: Mar 7, 2010 7:46 AM

“Carr completed 64% of his passes last year and didn’t throw a single pick. ”
Lol. He threw for 225 yards on 33 attempts last year, and you are trumpeting his completion percentage?
Ask the Panthers if he has anything left. They got rid of him quickly after seeing him start 4 games in 2007. He hasn’t started a game since.

  23. mwcarolina says: Mar 7, 2010 8:23 AM

well, Carr will back up and unlike others, i like Alex Smith and think he will improve.

    ==========================================
He only attempted 33 passes though, just a little perspective.
Having said that, I’d bring him in, God knows you can do worse than David Carr.

  25. KingJoe! says: Mar 7, 2010 9:06 AM

Carr is a back up’s back up. If the Giants had an injury prone QB, they would have needed more. Carr is merely an extra coach on the sidelines. In 2 seasons with the Giants to say “he did well when called upon” is a bit ridiculous. Carr threw less then 50 passes in two years. The Niners are looking for a guy who will accept the back up role, so when they bring in a vet like McNabb everyone will be happy; well after Smith gets kicked out of town, he might not be.

  26. DM725 says: Mar 7, 2010 9:25 AM

I’m guessing none of the skeptics are Giants fans and haven’t seen Carr since he was a struggling Panther.
Anyone that has seen the change in Carr since he’s been a Giant know this would be a great sign for the 49ers. Why else would the Browns, 49ers, Cardinals and Giants all want to sign this guy right now? The Giants desperately want him back as their #2 but he’s too good again to be a backup.
Carr will win the starting position unless they go with Alex Smith based on his knowledge of the offense and his slight improvement last year. But if Carr does learn that offense well (lord knows he’ll have enough time if he signs this week) then you can be sure he’ll start and San Francisco will win that division next year. Guaranteed.

  27. lakewooddave says: Mar 7, 2010 10:31 AM

This is a nice move providing they don’t overpay him. He may even be the starter in my opinion, The niner now need to focus on the weak o line. No quarterback can be successful behind this current line. If they pick up a couple of good linemen they may have a chance. It only seems fitting as well since Singletary loves the run schemes but need a good line to open up holes.

  28. JimboSlice925 says: Mar 7, 2010 1:39 PM

Why the criticism for signing a backup? Last offseason the Niners signed Damon Huard. How long did that last? Carr is competing with Hill to be the backup QB. The team will NOT rid themselves of Nate Davis so it’ll be Carr or Hill for a roster spot.
This is my first time posting on here, but why the Alex Smith bashing still? granted he’s not great but he’s making strides. In ten games started, he threw for 2300+ yds. 18 tds 12 ints. His projected numbers for the entire season would be 3700 yds 28 tds and 19 ints. Ill take those numbers for a starting qb anyday

It’s because he was the #1 overall pick in the draft and he just now, in his 5th season, has risen to the level of mediocrity. His 81.5 passer rating last season placed him at 19th among QBs, below the likes of Jason Campbell, David Garrard and Kyle Orton. You can make a case that he will continue to improve, but he definitely needs to since it’s hard to be better than an average team when your QB is just average.
