Giants considering Jeff Garcia for backup spot

The Giants will consider a pair of 40-year-old quarterbacks to replace David Carr.

The team is expected to look into Jeff Garcia and Mark Brunell, according to the New York Daily News

Garcia spent last season out of the league, but he would like to get back in.  His agent says Garcia doesn’t have a visit planned “yet” but he is “waiting to hear” from New York.

Brunell was Drew Brees’ backup in New Orleans last season, but it’s unclear if they want him back.

The Giants will start their backup search by meeting with Manning caddy Jim Sorgi Monday.

Garcia would be a good insurance policy for Matt Moore on the Panthers.

Take Garcia. Last I saw, he could still throw. Brunell just holds a pretty clipboard.

Sign them both. You can never have too many good smart vet QBs.

GARCIA, all he does is win. Why couldn’t he come to AZ? Damn.

the problem with Garcia is he always says he will be ok with a backup role, but then expects to start at some point. There is no way the Giants would ever start anyone over the guy they recently gave $100 million contract to.

Maybe they should just get a scarecrow and put a jersey on him and have him holding a clip board, it would prolly hold up alot better that either one of them, and would prolly have a higher passer rating than any Browns qb did last yr.

More importantly than being Drew Brees’ backup, Mark Brunell was Tom Coughlin’s star QB in Jacksonville in the late ’90s. Considering Manning’s durability and Brunell’s encyclopedic knowledge of Coughlin/Gilbride’s offense, this would actually be a good fit.

uh-oh Bretts gotta share some attention with another 40 yr old Qb.

As an Eagles fan, I think the Giants would do well to take Garcia. I don’t know what kind of shape he’s in these days, but I would assume he’s still worth signing.

Garcia is a much better QB than Brunell. Brunell has been done ever since his knee’s went bad. Brunell is a crappy pocket passer. Garcia has drive, talent, desire, smarts. Whew he’s gettin old though.

Garcia was the Eagles’ backup early last season when McNabb was injured and Vick still ineligible to play.

Garcia was on Philly’s roster for a couple of weeks last season. He is ageless, great insurance policy..

Dont know how much Garcia has left in the tank, but his passion for the game has definitely kept him in the game for a few more years than I expected. He sure plays with a lot of heart. What ever happened to that fat backup QB that the giants had that they thought they could somehow develope into a threatening player?lol. I think he went to college at Kentucky or BYU.

  16. Adam says: Mar 8, 2010 1:59 AM

If Giants don’t take him, Garcia would be great for the Jets.

  17. bh103 says: Mar 8, 2010 2:23 AM

Arizona should consider Garcia as a backup and potential starter.

  18. Adam says: Mar 8, 2010 2:24 AM

As a Jets/Giants fan, I’d REALLY like a guy like Garcia with the Jets. I think his knowledge and sorta similar style to Sanchez would help out Sanchez a lot. Plus, Sanchez has missed some games, and Garcia is a great journeyman.

In 2006, I think, Garcia took over for McNabb for a while. He beat the hell out of the Giants. So, can’t beat em, join em…sorta. Then again, he might be decent shortterm as QB of a team like Rams, Seattle (he’s west coast right?) Browns, other West Coast teams.
    He’s got some years left.

the bucs shouldnt have let garcia go last year in the first place.. too bad they wont get him to backup freeman and be a capable fill in if needed… giants may get sorgi though he seemed to be a good enough backup to peyton

  21. Bwa Ha Ha says: Mar 8, 2010 5:56 AM

If the Giants take him, I hope they are ready to see Eli get undermined

  22. pft1 says: Mar 8, 2010 6:06 AM

i think Steve DeBerg is available as well?

  23. Hooby says: Mar 8, 2010 7:07 AM

theres no way theyre gonna get a viable backup. if people actually realize that manning isnt actually able to throw a spiral, theyll start chanting jeffy-poo’s name when the games on the line…and then elis gonna go home and cry, maybe call peyton and ask why the world hates him.

Last time I heard, Jeff George is still waiting for the phone to ring too….

  25. mike_311 says: Mar 8, 2010 7:47 AM

the Giants should trade for McNabb, i think Mcnabb would benefit from playing behind a Superbowl winning QB.

  26. mikebiggs68 says: Mar 8, 2010 8:11 AM

Garcia getting a look from anybody just shows how bad the QB free agent class is, isn’t he like 60 years old.

  27. GiantsDefenseRules says: Mar 8, 2010 11:14 AM

    Garcia > Brunell
@ budda – Jared Lorenzen, U of Kentucky. He was released by the Giants a few years ago, and then signed by the Colts to be training camp fodder. Kid had a CANNON of an arm, but no accuracy. He was great on a few plays in his career…all 3rd or 4th an inches for a QB sneak.

  28. JSpicoli says: Mar 8, 2010 11:16 AM

The whining lisper. He should start for all 32 teams you know, just ask him.

  29. jayy says: Mar 8, 2010 3:19 PM

its intresting because as a longggg time giants fan garcia has always destroyed us..giants vs 49ers him n t.o went on a second half warpath..countless reg season games and playoff game against eagles he beat us to..him on the giants would be like t.o on the giants n i wouldnt like either lol..but he is a winner n thats al he does he would clearly be second unless eli gets hurt
