Jets give Cromartie $500,000 upfront

With seven kids in five states and allegations of overdue child support payments, new Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie is in need of some cash.

The Jets are giving it to him.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network is reporting that the Jets are restructuring the remaining year on Cromartie’s deal, converting about $500,000 of Cromartie’s $1.7 million salary into a bonus that he’ll receive now.

Without the Jets agreeing to re-work the deal, Cromartie would have had to wait until the regular season starts before he starts collecting his salary. And since his salary is about $100,000 a week, he would have had to wait until Week Five before he’d have $500,000. Apparently Cromartie (who also owes a former agent at least $32,000) needs $500,000 badly enough that he can’t make it until October.

Cromartie is in the final year of his contract, and the Jets are not expected to give him a long-term extension.

  1. This is a fine example of why the NFLPA better settle with the owners sooner rather than later on a new CBA. Guys like Cromartie won’t last a month before they are screaming their heads off once the lockout begins.

  2. Reminds me of that scene in, “Spies like Us”
    Greetings and farewells:
Knodding to salute: “Doctor!” “Doctor!” “Doctor!” “Doctor!”
Only this time, it’s a trans-continental road trip:
    “Cromartie! ” “Cromartie!” “Cromartie!”
    “Cromartie!” “Cromartie!” “Cromartie!”
    “Cromartie!”
Who knows if it’s just seven. It might just be the seven the public now knows about. ; )

Sounds like a model citizen. San Diego could not wait to get rid of this lowlife. Now he gets to play with and for the Scumbags of the NFL.
Jet fans, this is exactly the type of player you deserve.

  4. Big effing deal. Cromartie is a scumbag. He needed cash for the strippers. They don’t take post-dated checks.
The bigger question is why are you sleeping on the Rhodes to Arizona deal.
    I’ll get the scoop.
Jets trade FS Kerry Rhodes to Arizona for Arizona’s pick in the 4th round and a 2011 7th round pick.
The Cards still have the Ravens 3rd and 4th rounders.
The Cardinals will pay him a $2 million roster bonus next week, with a salarie of $2.78 million in 2010.
There. Now you can go back to sleep.

  5. Who says the Jets are classless. At least they try to make up for their heartless business moves.

  6. Why would Cromartie show up for training camp without a new deal if he is in that bad of financial shape?

  7. And I’ll bet less than $10k of that goes to the children of this Father of the Year.

  8. You jets fans can have this guy! Great player on and off the field….knuckle head ! hope he ruins the chemistry on the jets like he ruined the chemistry with the chargers ! bonehead! K.I.D.S kids ..kids… kids..! good luck with this pre -madonna!

  9. K.I.D.S…..kids kids kids >good luck with this guy jets fans! Ur team chemistry has just changed! This guy couldn’t handle sleepy SAN DIEGO …Cant wait to see what he does in the city that never sleeps! GOOD LUCK! ps: CANT BELIEVE THEY GAVE UP A 3RD ROUNDER FOR THIS GUY!

Hey Numb Nuts, the Kerry Rhodes trade was posted on this site yesterday @ 6:59pm EST. Before acting snotty, look back a few pages and see what you missed since the last time you visited here.

Who is going to be willing to give him a new deal under the current circumstances? The Jets should wait and see how he works out this season, and make a decision after that. No better way to motivate the guy than not offering him another contract until he proves himself.
The Chargers have gotten the better of this deal, unless Cromartie all of a sudden improves himself both on and off the field.
I can’t think of a worse place to send Cromartie, given all of all off the field distractions that may lie in New York.

  12. HA HA HA………..An NFL player working on a draw. Too funny. Enjoy the ride Jet fans. This is going to get good.
