Kampman cashes in

So much for a torn ACL and a subpar season before the injury.

Defensive end turned linebacker turned defensive end Aaron Kampman will earn big money in Jacksonville.

Michael C.Wright of the Florida Times-Union reports that Kampman inked a four-year deal worth $26 million, with $11 million guaranteed.

As Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com points out, the deal matches the package received by new Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch.

So the Eagles can dump money on dog-killer Vick… but not this guy?

  3. similis says: Mar 7, 2010 7:45 PM

I’d take Kampman over KVB every day of the week, and over Peppers about 3-4 days of the week. Kampman’s an extremely hard worker, and a great locker room guy.
As safe of a signing as you can have (with a bad acl). Huge motor guy.

  4. emoser says: Mar 7, 2010 7:45 PM

Can’t blame the eagles for not signing guys like peppers or kampman when other teams are willing to overpay like this.

  6. The Devil says: Mar 7, 2010 7:49 PM

The Jags rolled the dice on a guy that may not be ready to start in the opener.
But they got a clubhouse leader and if they front load this contract a cap friendly arrangement for future years. I have no doubt he will come back strong and play hard, but why would a great player like this want to go to a team in downward spiral?
good guy, big mistake to land in Florida. But I guess you have to get the money somewhere…

Good for Kampman! I came from Iowa myself and was pissed to see him reduced to a clown roll on a Capers defense. Go to Florida and play like we all know you can. Show the rotten Packers organization that they are as dumb as we think they are.

Aaron is a sure bet to perform at 100% on every play from day one to the last day of year four. He’s a class act on and off the field to boot.
The best to you Kampy. You’ll be missed in Green Bay.

  22. onesweetworld says: Mar 7, 2010 8:18 PM

Well when you only have 14 sacks in a season you need to take some risks and spend money. I rather my team spend my money and at least try to fix the problem then paying a 3rd QB millions to do nothing.

  23. Akshun says: Mar 7, 2010 8:23 PM

@ Krow.. id rather have a dog killer that can get on the field a couple plays and get us some value later at backup qb or draft picks than have an overpaid DE that’s gonna get hurt again and wont see the field much

  24. PackFanNChiTown says: Mar 7, 2010 8:23 PM

I figured Kampman would get a big payday in the uncapped year; if he recovers from the ACL he should be a big producer for the L.A. Jags…

  25. KingKunal says: Mar 7, 2010 8:29 PM

Sure beats the hell out of trading away two third round picks and a fifth round pick and pay the same money over one more season to an unproven player (see Derrick Harvey).

    @ The Devil: “downward spiral”???
The Jags have 1 bad year of attendance and we’re in a downward spiral? Really?! We had the BEST draft in the league last year. We are stocked with good, young talent. This team’s arrow is pointing up. Maybe he wanted to play in a state with no state income tax. He’s gonna save a fortune that way!
    @PackFanNChiTown: Stay Classy.
It’s not gonna be the L.A. Jags. You’d think a fan of another small-market team would have some sympathy. But since you live in Chicago, I understand why you’re a jerk.

I love how Packer fans use the “The Vikings have never won the SB.” when your team has only 1 championship since the Vikings have been around, and the Minnesota organization has more divisional titles in that same stretch.
Come back when you are the Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, or Patriots of the NFL when you have more than 1 glorious year to mouth off about.
And as for Kampman, congrats on going somewhere where your GM and coaching staff aren’t a bunch of dips**ts, moving you out of your true position to start a formation that flat out wasnt fit for your personel.
Enjoy 2nd in the division again Pack fans.

I surprised the Vikings didn’t make a run at him. They seem to love ex Packers, whether they are any good or not. But Kampman is a class guy and he would have never fit in that lockerroom with the felons, hooker-hiring, speed zone breaker, substance abusers.

  45. Cohl4 says: Mar 7, 2010 10:27 PM

EMoney you said “Good job Ted. Could have traded him for something last off season but Ted was too stubborn and thought he could make it work. Now we get nothing. ”
Actually the Packers will get a draft pick for Kampy. Probably a 3rd to 5th round pick. Which is probably about the same value as if the Packers had traded him.
I suspect the Packers offered over fair market value to keep him, but this was too much $ for an injured player to turn down. With Florida’s no income tax this makes this $ what, about another 30% more?
Kampy, Packer Fans will always cheer for you – thanks for all the memories.

  47. Sasquash says: Mar 7, 2010 10:28 PM

26 Million is chump change for a hard working, all effort DE. Eagles again must be smoking crack. Kampman is the anti Stacy Andrews. In Philly opposite of T.Cole he would get single blocker every play. 10-12 sacks no doubt. All you guys that say thats to much or he washed up have no clue.

  50. RyRy says: Mar 7, 2010 11:54 PM

Really think the Pack should have held on to him for one more season .. but coming off an ACL tear, its just too much of a what if. Besides, he never wanted to be a 3-4 LB anyway .. so he never was going to succeed. He set himself up for failure. “Class act” BS. He was a crybaby who just said the right things to the media. There’s a reason they let him walk ..

  54. Bob Nelson says: Mar 8, 2010 1:56 AM

This is a good signing for the Jaguars. A proven blue chip player and high quality locker room guy.
With the Packers transistion to a 3-4 they asked Kampman to become an OLB. Kampman was making 6 million a year with the Packers as a 4-3 DE.
So the increase in salary is not that much.
Why is this story polluted with comments from low class rubbish from the jealous vikling humanoids?
They have no NFL accomplishments and therefore attempt to tear down others to their low level.

  55. shaggytoodle says: Mar 8, 2010 2:00 AM

I am happy for him, I honestly believe he just wants to be play football. GB would let him do it, Jax would let him do it in a defense he has succeeded it. I wish him the best.

  56. gbsparks says: Mar 8, 2010 5:25 AM

Is it possible to re-direct all the Viking trolls to the appropriate link involving their team?
It’s boring to read the same old TT-hate, Favre rules, best players bailing bs from “fans” who have obviously never even been to Lambeau for an actual game.
I love the Packers. TT has indeed built the Pack into a legitimate SB contender for the next few years.
Dom Capers has, in fact, transformed the defense into a formidable weapon and the offense is very definitely at least among the top five.
What more do these trolls expect of a GM: A cure for their brain cancer?

  57. gbsparks says: Mar 8, 2010 5:29 AM

Just one question: How do the Packers leave Kampman as a de in a 3-4 configuration where there is NO defensive end?
The Pack didn’t “mess with a probowl player”, they completely changed their defensive scheme to great effect.
Kampman preferred the 4-3, the Packers are 3-4. Do the math.

  58. Love_Boat_Scandal says: Mar 8, 2010 5:33 AM

  59. last starfighter says: Mar 8, 2010 7:08 AM

It’s amazing how many hateful, dumb people post on this blog. The packers let a guy go who is coming off off of serious injury and is very solid but not great go to a team willing to overpay him. Some will say he didn’t do well last year because of being in a 3-4 but they don’t mention the dirty little secret that 2 seasons ago when in the 4-3 he was very infective and generated very little pressure on a defense that did not pressure the passer. The general consensus was that he couldn’t put up big numbers without KGB on the other side any longer. Some people think they should criticize the team for letting a seriously injured 31 year old go when the defense actually improved after he left the lineup. Those people are morons.
Kampman is wonderful guy but he isn’t dominant and unlike some commenters assertions he is a very quiet individual and not a vocal leader. He sets good examples but isn’t what you call a locker-room leader.
I also love how much blind hatred some just have for the pack and the state of WI. How trashy of these fans to act so transparently jealous of a team that has more titles than any other and is on the cusp of another. Keep it coming losers

OK everybody, it’s time to get real here. Kampman will be missed, but only in a nostalgic kind of way. He blew out his knee and he has played ten years. I am glad he got the big bucks while he can, because I really like the guy. But the name of the game is “can he help us win,” and he no longer could…for the two reasons above and because he doesn’t fit in a surprisingly good (and getting better) 3-4. I have a feeling he won’t pan out in Jax and TT will look prophetic….again.
