Laveranues Coles could return to Jets again

Wide receiver Laveranues Coles became an unrestricted free agent when the Cincinnati Bengals released him last week, and he could sign with the New York Jets. Again.

The New York Daily News is reporting that the team is open to signing Coles for what would be his third stint with the Jets, although the report says the Jets would likely take their time and only offer him a modest contract.
Because Coles was released, his signing with the Jets would not fall under the “final four” rule that requires the Jets, Colts, Saints and Vikings to lose an unrestricted free agent before they can sign one.

Last year the Jets cut Coles after he agreed to give up $6 million guaranteed in exchange for having the final year of his contract voided. After that he signed a four-year, $28 million contract with the Bengals, but he lasted only one season there.

Coles was drafted by the Jets in 2000, signed with the Redskins in 2003 and was traded back to the Jets in 2005 before leaving in 2009.

In 2009 with the Bengals Coles caught 43 passes for 514 yards, his lowest totals since his rookie year. With the Jets he would likely be the No. 3 receiver behind Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards.

Is this a joke ? Marshall is out there for a number 1 pick and were going to go on Round 3 with this guy. As a Jets fan our WR suck and bringing this guy in will do no better. Sad. It’s like NY is allergic to a good WR

    please no..
He may have been a 4.2 guy back in college, but he never ever played at that speed. Now with the toe, he’s a 4.8 guy. He’s also injury prone.

I dont think we can do Braylon and Brandon at the same time realisticly, unless we find someone to give us a 1st and 3rd. My thing is we can go after all these realeased players in an uncapped year, and all we hear about is ex-jets. Pennington, TJ, Coles??? Why cant we go after Joey Porter, and how about Jamal Lewis in short yardage to go with Shonn, and Leon. I would even consider Torry Holt before Coles.

Jerricho Cotchery is about as solid a number two as you can get, Braylon Edwards has been a number one in this league before, and Dustin Keller continues to develop (yes, I think of Keller more of a WR then a TE), so I disagree with the above sentiment that the Jets are that bad off at WR. Coles is not a number one anymore, but he absolutely has the quickness and toughness to play out of the slot, and he knows the damn system already. This is a no brainer if they can sign him to a relatively cheap deal.

Edwards is not a number one WR at this point in his career. He is a number 2 or 3. The Jets were simply the worst passing offense in the league last year. Defenses stacked 8-9 men in the box on almost every play. They dared Sanchez to throw and despite every advantage he was terrible. He could really use some help at WR. Yes Cotchery is tough as nails but he takes a lot of punishment and how long will it be before his body starts breaking down.
After Cotchery and Edwards the Jets do not have legitimate NFL WR. The talent drop off is huge. Coles would add some depth and leadership but obviously he is only short term help.
Marshall would be an amazing value for the 29th pick and much better than anything the Jets could dream of taking in the draft. The question is how bad a person is he and can he be controlled. The Jets tried to trade for him last year so I would imagine there is at least some interest.

Really? Does anybody really want him on their team anymore?
