Now that there is no cap it is NOT the time for the Redskins to change their ways.

See Florio, this is why you’ll never be anything more than a blogger. The Cowboys lack of interest in free agents in the first three days of free agency is the #1 story of the free agency period as far as you’re concerned, really?
“They’ve also shown no interest in locking up one of their own, receiver Miles Austin.”
They’ve given the highest possible tender to Austin. If that doesn’t show their interest in locking him up, nothing will. I can’t believe that it’s been 3 days and nobody has poison pilled Miles Austin away! What are they waiting on, Florio? Does this not indicate that there’s absolutely no interest in Miles Austin? You’re an unqualified idiot.
“Jones still has that brand-new stadium to pay for, and the thinking is that he simply doesn’t have the cash on hand that he would need in order to spend like everyone thought he would.”
You know, I’ve come to the realization that it’ll be a cold day in hell the next time you write a positive article about the Cowboys no matter what they do.
Who do you think they should have gone for that would have provided an upgrade, smart guy? Peppers couldn’t start on this team. Neither could Rolle. Nor Dansby, nor Kampman. Who did you have in mind?

If Martz can coax a performance like he did in Denver it would do nothing to keep anyone employed. Cutler never once made the playoffs in Denver and had a losing record as a starter overall. Now he went to Chicago, where people kept saying he was their savior and sure to make them contenders. What happened instead? The same thing as in Denver, he was reckless with the ball, threw too many interceptions overall and way too many in the red zone and was once again sitting at home during the playoffs. Martz’s system could be good for him or it could also be a disaster since it is also very ego driven. The only benefit might be that in Martz’s system, you throw to a specific receiver for the play designed and based on the read at the line, so that should cut down on the amount of interceptions Cutler throws by trying to force a ball into coverage late over the middle.

Normally I’d agree with you but the UFA period was going to suck this year and anyone old enough to remember the NFL before the salary cap era started should have seen it coming.
There simply aren’t players out there worth throwing tons of cash to.

Florio, with the Marshall being signed by a late pick team and dealt to the Broncos, you’re completely ignoring that the owner is stuck paying the signing bonus for the Broncos. It’s not worth any owner $10m+ just to move up 20 spots in the draft, much less a smaller market owner like Benson/Irsay.

Is Jerry Jones tapped out? As much as a megalomaniac, self obsessed, blowhard billionaire can be tapped out? I really thought the Cowboys would at least make a run at some of the free agents out there. They obviously have a pretty good team and have finally won a playoff game with Romo. One would think they would be trying to get better by spending money, if Jones has any left after building that monstrosity in Dallas.

  7. danlinker says: Mar 8, 2010 1:26 PM

Nobody that left the cards was worth the money they were seeking. Rolle is the highest paid safety? You really believe that should be so? Same with Dansby, he’s good, but not great. And he’s now overpaid. Boldin may be worth the money, but he gets injured too often for that kind of investment.
I notice florio that there is nothing in that article about Rhodes. That was a major coup to get him for that price and you know it.
However, I do like that you dissed the cowboys again. I know it’s just to get hits, but I love it all the same.

hey vox, here is something else to consider.
i guarantee that the football team and the stadium are organized under two different corporations for the sake of liability.what mr. jones spends on the football team has no bearing on the stadium.either one could bankrupt and not take down the other.i don’t think any bank would foreclose on the cowboys because who would want to buy a billion dollar stadium in this economy?

  9. xxxteejxxx says: Mar 8, 2010 1:41 PM

@ THRILLHO – If I am not mistaken, signing bonuses can be post dated, kind of like writing a post dated check. Therefore, a lower round team can sign Marshall to an offer sheet on March 8 and post date it March 11, giving time for said lower round team to turn around and trade him to the Seahawks for the 14th pick.
That being said, I think going after Marshall is stupid for the Seahawks. They have way too many holes to fill besides doing their annual WR dance that they have been doing lately.

“There simply aren’t players out there worth throwing tons of cash to.”
Not according to Florio. According to Florio, there’s plenty out there, especially for the Cowboys. You know ol’ Jerry Jones, if he ain’t trying to buy a championship by signing every free agent out there, it’s because he’s broke.
Fact is the Cowboys have probably been the least active NFCE team in free agency in the last 5 years. 0-3gles had Howard, Samuel, Andrews. Giants had Burress, Pierce, Arrington, McKenzie. Not even gonna list the Redskins. Who have the Cowboys signed to big free agent contracts? TO and Leonard Davis?

  11. .VoxVeritas says: Mar 8, 2010 1:48 PM

“One would think they would be trying to get better by spending money”
On who? Who’s available that would provide an upgrade? A lot of these high-dollar guys that have been signed couldn’t start for the Cowboys and the ones that MIGHT be able to are on the wrong side of 30. Three days into free agency and six months from the start of the season and the nubs are losing their minds.

The only question I have after reading the 10-pack article is from viewing that picture of Snyder in his snazzy Redskins sweatsuit –why was he walking on the grass instead of the sidewalk?

  13. BroncoBourque says: Mar 8, 2010 1:58 PM

    @THRILLHO
I don’t see it happening anyways but if a team wanted to help the Seahawks out in the way Florio has scripted they could do it and not have to pay him the bonus. They would just have to sign him with a roster bonus due a few days after the deal. The downfall to this is that the roster bonus wouldn’t be subject to be repaid if Marshall gets into trouble down the line, which given who we are talking about is a big risk for Seatle.

  14. Adam says: Mar 8, 2010 2:00 PM

If I understand it right, I really like the 3 team trade for Marshall.
It would be a late first round team offers the 1st round pick to Broncos for Marshall.
Then Seahawks trade their 14th pick to the team that traded their 1st for Marshall, and Seahawks compensate that team for the money spent on Marshall including bonus etc.
Am I getting that right? If I am, sounds like a good deal for Seahawks.

“i guarantee that the football team and the stadium are organized under two different corporations for the sake of liability.”
I guarantee that Jerry Jones doesn’t own Cowboys Stadium. The city of Arlington does.

Just to blow some holes through your Seahawks end around on the Broncos theory, I have a couple thoughts for you.
    1. The final 8 teams are all hamstrung from signing free agents this off season due to the cba unless they have lost free agents of there own. Now while some of them have lost a few none have certainly lost enough to be able to Give Brandon a contract in the 10 million dollar a year range before trading him to the Hawks for pick 14.
    2. As another poster pointed out no owner will eat the up front money it will take to sign him only to trade him to move up 10 to 15 spots in the draft and then give that rookie at 14 more up front money also.
    3. Being a restricted free agent means the broncos have the right to match the deal. If the Broncos were not comfortable with the pick they were getting back they could simply match the deal.
    4. The Broncos front office most surely does not want pick 14 out of all the picks in the first round because it would create the public relations nightmare that you have traded Brandon Marshall for Alphonso Smith which will not sit well with the Broncos fan base after all they have gone through the last year

.VoxVeritas, Austin should have been locked down long ago and someone may just decide that’s it’s worth taking a chance on him. Jerry’s foolish to let him stay out there this long but what can you expect from a guy who’s willing to open up the bank vault for a guy who did nothing the year before but suddenly get cautious when it comes to a guy who actually has a good year.
    Florio,
Whether you want to believe it or not, Jerry’s not financing much of what “may” be owed on the stadium. He got $475 mil from Arlington and the NFL and the NFL is letting him pay back that from game revenue (IF he hasn’t gotten them out of the way by now). They put up 15,000 seats at $16,000 several years ago and those seats were snapped up quickly. If every one that bought an option on a seat or suite just paid the minimum (25%) then he ONLY took in $227 mil from the PSLs sold. However, the economic situation was different several years back and he got most, if not all, of the up front from many of the ones that were sold several years ago. At the very minimum, he gets $100 mil from tickets and $90 mil from concessions and parking and that’s all his and I don’t think that he shares it with Steinbrenner, with whom he co-owns the concessions company. Take away the $95 mil from TV and say, $30 mil from tickets to pay off salaries and he’s grossing $160 mil just from NFL games. That doesn’t include the concerts, 5 college football games, two college basketball game and the NBA All-Star game that he got free and clear from the NFL. He’s paying $2.5 mil a year to Arlington and for approximately 4,000 PART TIME employees, which isn’t as much as some people think it is and when you add it all up, he’s bringing in a pretty penny (Plus, I’ve overlooked what he’s getting from the suites (catering) and standing room only section (ticket revenue and concessions)). I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t free and clear NOW but at worst, paid off in 3 years. Jerry loves money and he wants people out of his business as soon as possible to I don’t see him taking on a lot of long term debt.

First and foremost, shame on you Florio for equating DallASS to the Yankees and the Redskins to the Red Sox. The Redskins, for many years, have been the highest revenue team in the NFL. For those of you too slow…they bring in the MOST money, not to mention they were the highest valued team for the better part of a decade until DallASS built their new stadium. Also, for better or worse, the Redskins have spent much more in the way of free agency over the years. So please tell me again how the Redskins are second fiddle to the Cowboys financially. If anything Jones is handcuffed by building that gaudy stadium, the one that doesn’t have it’s naming rights sold to a corporate sponsor. Get your facts right chump.

    1. Dallas has been #1 for 3 years in a row and for many years, they were #1 when Washington wasn’t even close.
    2. You can spend, spend, spend and get nothing, nothing, nothing – welcome to Snyder Land, filled with lots of expensive tea cup rides.
    3. Dallas brings in far more revenue than you think but you have no idea what you’re talking about. You might read my previous message to see how far off you are on YOUR facts.
