DeNiro will play Lombardi

When I was a kid, a long, long time ago, Ernest Borgnine played Vince Lombardi in a made-for-TV movie.

Today, a guy who doesn’t naturally look a whole lot like Lombardi will play the former Packers coach in a theatrical motion picture being development by ESPN Films, Andell Entertainment, and the NFL.

The story focuses on the rivalry between Lombardi and Cowboys coach Tom Landry, and the movie climaxes with the Ice Bowl.

Though DeNiro doesn’t naturally look much like Lombardi, it’s a safe bet that he’ll do whatever he has to do to transform himself into the legendary head coach.

And who knows?  Maybe DeNiro’s most well-known line will be replaced by a new one.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Borgnine is still going strong into his 90s.  He not long ago shared his secret with FOX & Friends.

Actually, as many parents with young children will know, Ernest Borgnine continues to work with Ensign Parker (Tim Conway) from his days on McHale’s Navy. They make frequent appearances on Spongebob Squarepants, where he is Mermaid Man and Conway is Barnacle Boy.

  11. Bob Nelson says: Mar 9, 2010 3:59 PM

Earnest Borgnine did a great job as Lombardi.
Why not just show that performance?
Lombardi is a facinating character and all football fans should know a few thing about the man the ultimate football trophy is name after.
I sure hope the new film is well written and not like a lot of junk that has come from hollywood since the 80′s.
Even Howard Cossell opened his book discussing Lombardi. It is important for younger people to understand the greatest football coach and his philosphy on life.
The NFL will always remember him fondly.

I agree with Bob Nelson. There just ain’t no place like it. Even my 4 brothers said so two years ago, when I finally made my maiden voyage to Title Town, at the tender age of 45. My brothers are all Cowboy Fans, yet every single one of them told me (w/out a wink, or joke) that the Lambeau Football experience was simply the best they’d ever had. These are brothers who live in Arizona, Washington St. and Minnesota. All were also on their 1st trip to Lambeau. This is all NOT TO MENTION that our Dad of 73 years was with us, on his 33rd trip to Lambeau, interrupted by 2 ‘Nam tours and being stationed all over the world. Needless to say, let everyone know, from far and wide, that football started here and it will end here. THAT is the passion of Green Bay football.

===============================You realize how hypocritcal you and your Packer bretheren sound right now , don’t you?
Lomabardi leave and goes to coach the redskins and 40 some years later, you still sing his praises.
Yet you vilify Favre continously for working his way out ?
Wait, it was fine that he went to the Jets…..that’s the justification isn’t it?
As long as he goes where the fans don’t have a problem, it’s ok.
God forbid he play out HIS career the way he wants to.
    You people are pathetic!
Clinging to trophies that except for one, you weren’t even alive for.
Biggest hypocritical fanbase on the planet…bar none.
I bet if Lombardi went on to coach the Vikings he’d be a POS too , right?
You want to talk typical….thats it right there in black and white.
Someday you will realize. that in the grand scheme of things, fans do not matter.
Sure, they count on us to buy tickets, but they give 2 shits less about what we think…players or owners.
What is laughable is that you think anyone cares if your upset.
Unless you are a “stockholder of the Packers”.
Then they are laughing at you.
Talk about the biggest heist in America.
The ignorance of the Packer fanbase is truly frightening.

As a matter of fact, no, I do not. Lombardi retired and came back two years later. No problem there. And in the course of normal business, Longwell and Sharper go their way too. I have no problem with that. Favre deserves to be vilified by all fans, not just Packer fans, for identifying his teammates as not worthy of him, picking the team he would rather play for, and trying to fool the Packers into letting him go when he had no intention of retiring.
For example, let’s say the Vikings weren’t loaded for bear (as they are) and were a “normal” team…like the 2008 Packers. Adrian Peterson decides to pretend he was retiring so that he could get an unconditional release (strange…why ask for that if you are retiring?) Then he believes that the Bears represent his best chance to win a SuperBowl……not his own teammates….not his own team. You’re OK with that?
Wake up, see it for what it is, and throw your purple-tinted sunglasses away. He’s a Douche with a capital “D”.
…BTW…the “ownership stock” is marketing genius 101. Nobody but the privately owned Packers could even think of it, much less implement it. Purple and gold pennants hanging on the wall are a dime a dozen. If the Vikings coiuld save their franchise by doing the same thing, they would do it so fast your head would spin fast enough to appear to be green and gold.

  42. chickenragnar says: Mar 10, 2010 1:01 PM

No, I would not call him a douche.
I can’t blame the guy for wanting out of GB.
The truth is, that when he went to the Jets it was ok, now he went to the Vikes and he’s a turd?
Thanks for reenforcing the fact that 99% of the Gb fanbase is hypocritical. You are mad because he was supposed to retire a Packer.
Players are just supposed to be good soldiers and do what management wants or what the fans want?
This isn’t Russia. Is this russia?
I wouldn’t have a problem with any player doing it. There isn’t anything we can do about it, so why get our panties in a bunch?
I root for the Vikings, not one player.
BTW. it was genius. I’m referring to the turds that come on here and preface thier posts with ” As a packer stockholder” like it means something.
    Anyway, he’s a douche now that he’s a Viking.
Once again proving that you and fans like you are playing the jilted love role.
These egomaniacs (owners/players) don’t give 2 shits about you. The sooner you realize it the better.
They don’t care in GB, why should they?
They have 70,000 a ticket waiting list.
Meanwhile, they can just keep herding the cattle in no matter the product on the field(see 70′s -80′s Pack glory years.
Where is the incentive to improve? There is none.
TT is the perfect GM for that team, he makes them money, gives you a 1 in 5 shot in the playoffs and then it’s back to square one.
