More details on the Saints-Cowboys wine feud

Last week, Peter King of SI.com shared a hilarious story regarding the efforts of Saints coach Sean Payton to finagle an expensive bottle of wine at an Indianapolis restaurant the night before the Cowboys could get their mitts on it.

Our pal Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio had one of the waitresses from St. Elmo’s on his show recently.  She confirmed the incident, and she added some more details.

She said that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had not expressly reserved the last bottle of the wine in question, but the staff knew from past experience that it is one of the wines Jones likes.

When Payton ordered the wine, he wasn’t told that Jones and the Cowboys’ entourage was coming to the restaurant the next night, or that Jones may have wanted that wine.  Payton later learned of Jones’ likely interest in the wine, and then Payton decided to autograph the label and leave the bottle for Jones.

The bottle won’t be headed to the Hall of Fame any time soon; after it was left for the Cowboys, someone knocked the bottle over and broke it.

someone knocked the bottle over and broke it.
Surely Dallas has a $9MM receiver that could have caught it…

You know its the offseason when Florio is talking about wine bottles who cares

So we have Winegate (Payton vs Jones) and Whinegate (crybaby Viking fans). It’s good to be the king.

That’s cool, Manny Pacquiao gave Jones an autographed bottle of Caymus as a gift.

I still say that any restaurant that’s worth a crap should keep more than one bottle of any wine it has on it’s wine list onhand. Especially any restaurant that charges 9 bucks for onion rings.

ha ha the cowboys are sorry sports for breaking the bottle. TwoDat

Sorry, but I don’t think this story could get any more gay.. Not unless Brad Childress was dressed in drag and serving as the hostess that night.

Another Pulitzer, ‘lil Napoleon. Short people have no reason to live.
This story is the reason that the off-season sucks. But this would have to come up 3 levels to be a non-story.

Who uses bulletin board material anymore? If you need to be motivated by a wine bottle, then you clearly won’t be winning any championships.

Somehow I doubt that Vox is drinking anything other than Boone’s Farm or a Pinot Grigio. I just don’t think that he has any taste at all what so ever being a cowgurl fan.
Who cares about what Manny Pacquiao?
It is going to be quite some time until the gurls are toasting anything. Great pick up by the way last year in RW. Could possibly rival the signing of Archuletta. Probably worse.

  21. Bob says: Mar 9, 2010 7:18 PM

So, in essence, what you’re saying, Florio, is that Peter King embellished (to be kind) or flat made up parts of this story. Why does that not surprise me?

You read the whole story and then commented on it, soooo I think you care a little.

  26. .VoxVeritas says: Mar 9, 2010 7:52 PM

So basically Payton ordered a bottle of wine that Jones didn’t reserve, but has ordered before. And this is supposed to be a big rivalry thing?

  27. Fan of Football says: Mar 9, 2010 7:59 PM

THE STORY IS FREAKIN LAME ANY WAYS. CAN WE STOP HEARING ABOUT IT?

  28. Fan of Football says: Mar 9, 2010 8:01 PM

Because I’m sure America’s 10% unemployment rate and people who saw their retirement savings evaporate in the stock market really want to hear about rich people fighting over wine. That is exactly what they need right now to cheer them up I’m sure.

  29. Champs says: Mar 9, 2010 8:12 PM

There are whiny Vikings fans, and there are whiners about whiny Vikings fans. The latter seem more vocal and a lot less intelligent.

Nothing is worse than the Archuleta signing (highest paid Safety in the league at the time). But remember at the same time Danny Boy overpaid for Randle el and traded for and then overpaid Brandon “i’d rather be a rapper” Lloyd. FYI, Manny is a bad, bad man.

Who really cares? People come to this site to read football news, not about some stupid story about who reserved wine and who didn’t.

  36. DieHardSkinsFan21 says: Mar 9, 2010 11:21 PM

    @BigTex
I understand that Archuletta was very very bad, and there was a ton of over-spending, however…….RW is almost cut? What did jerry and his toupe give up for RW? Was it a first and a third? Thats terrible. I would much rather give up money than my first and third pick…..Not only the RW acquisition, also the pacman jones pick-up, letting the tuna out. Things are not going to be good in dallass for a long long time.

  37. Big Tex says: Mar 10, 2010 7:34 AM

The Pacman pick up was a mistake but the ‘Boys got the pick back so it was a gamble on athletic talent which cost nothing. Parcells quit. He initially took the job to replace money lost in a divorce and when he had that money back, he rolled out of town. Not the first time he’s quit. Were I a Skins fan, I’d be a lot more worried about finding a QB and RBs and WRs and an Oline, than whether or not Roy Williams will ever return to a Pro Bowl level.

In fairness, Vox has to take whatever the wino at the liquor store (or one of his Moms “boyfriends”) will buy for him until he becomes legal in 7 years.

I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see. I recommend cutting down on the caffeine. You seem angry. But, do you really believe that this will happen with Sean Payton and Drew Brees at the helm? C’mon man. Maybe not the Super Bowl every year, but they’ll be a highly competetive contender for the next few years.

and what team do you pull for? The Vikings? 0-4 in Superbowls? Maybe choking Colts? Actually I’d say that Saints fans are far from miserable right now. In two years the only way they’d be miserable is if they’re sub .500 which is highly unlikely under this regime.
oh and p.s. who died and made you a football prophet? moron.
