Boselli has a point, even if it was articulated a bit clumsily

So earlier today our own MDS (whose recent Lasik surgery allows him to shed the spectacles and spend even longer hours starting into a monitor as he pounds out content for PFT and FanHouse.com) posted a blurb about the comments of former Jaguars tackle Tony Boselli, who is trying to get folks in Jacksonville to embrace the team by buying tickets.

MDS pointed out — and then questioned the wisdom of — this quote:  “Even if you don’t like football, if you’re in business in Jacksonville you need to support the Jaguars.  It’s the duty of anyone who can afford season tickets to buy them.”

Boselli responded to our (my) Twitter account, saying that it is dangerous to take one statement out of a 30 minute talk and make a judgment” and that “you should support your team if you can afford it.”

I generally agree with Boselli’s logic, but he still said what he said.  And it was more than reasonable for MDS to question whether an effort aimed at getting people who aren’t buying tickets to start buying tickets will succeed if former players are asking folks to ignore the question of whether they’re interested in the product when deciding whether to financially support it.

Boselli’s point, I believe, was that a pro football team provides enormous financial advantages to a community, making it imperative for folks to rally around the franchise.  The team gives the community national exposure, the team provides 10 occasions per year when a bunch of folks are paying for parking and buying beer and food and other stuff, and the team brings people from other cities to town, resulting in increased occupancy at hotels and increased restaurant business.

Regardless, when I go to Jacksonville in the future, I’ll have to worry about Boselli throwing me out a window.  Given that Channing Crowder would like to do the same in Miami, the only NFL city in Florida in which I currently can travel without keeping my head on a swivel is Tampa.

Don’t worry, Florio, I think Tampa hates you too.

Ok, how about it’s the teams duty to lower salaries so they can lower ticket price so more people can come. Huh, who’d have thunk of that?
And as far as not articulating his point well, he played lineman in the NFL for how long? what do you expect of the man?

Don’t be so sure about being totally safe when you visit to Tampa, big guy.
You’ve literally made a career out of trashing the Bucs and every move they make.
I’m stilling reeling on the comment you made about the Falcons last year when you did the “PFT NFC South Preview”
“Well, the Falcons aren’t going to be competitive for at least 5 years.”, Mike Florio
I’m not a Falcons fan….but that is just an assnine statement.
Do you even watch football Florio?

  4. Florida Funk says: Mar 10, 2010 5:05 PM

    excuse me……..
    asinine.
In a sentence: Mike Florio continuously writes asinine statements and posts them on the internet for the world to see

what did Florio say about Channing Crowder?

  8. cleanface says: Mar 10, 2010 5:14 PM

I think Boselli means “My income earning ability as an ex-jock would be significantly diminished if not completely eliminated if the only team that I played for as a pro leaves town”.

A clumsily articulated statement should fit in perfectly with Florio’s clumsily written “articles”.

Boselli doesn’t even know what you look like don’t flatter yourself

Florida Funk: Well, we’re a year in, and they’re not competitive. They don’t spend money, and their chances for being competitive next year aren’t looking so good either. The fact that their defense is more or less completely devoid of any young talent aside from Barrett Ruud and Aqib Talib and Tanard Jackson doesn’t help the cause. I’m no Tampa hater, but if the show fits…

Thank God the Gator Bowl switched conference affiliations huh Florio?
FSU is gonna miss whoopin’ that ass in Duval County.

It doesn’t matter if Jacksonville has a NFL team. Everyone knows the city sucks and it’s not worth visiting (unless of course you’re into endless, crappy strip malls).

Amazing to me how everyone hates the guy that actually tell the truth opposed to the writers that sugar coat everything so they don;t upset the team and lose access to the players. Yeah that makes for good honest reporting of what actually happened.
No wonder we are screwed in this country. Most people live in a world where everyone gets to play and they are good at everything because their mom told them they were.
Keep up the good work Florio. So you get some things wrong. So do ALL reporters. People just don’t get to comment on those stories and by the time the next story comes out in the MSM they can’t even remember what was written the day before.

  15. ZombieRevolution says: Mar 10, 2010 5:37 PM

“…but he still said what he said.” If every line put out by PFT was considered individually without context Florio would be selling pencils on the street, don’t you agree Mr. Bradshaw?

“…Boselli’s point, I believe, was that a pro football team provides enormous financial advantages to a community, …”
If that was his point, he was wrong. Any financial advantage is mostly over-rated and if public financing was used, it doesn’t exist.

Tampa will draft Ndamukong Suh who also wants to crush Florio.

    mustbechris…
must not be able to read
The quote is from a comment made by Florio about the FALCONS.
While I wouldn’t completely disagree with your thoughts on the Bucs…..I wouldn’t completely agree with them either.
You forgot to mention the amount of draft picks they have accumulated for the upcoming draft(5 in the first 99 picks).
This year’s FA class is the weakest in years, while this year’s draft class is heralded as the best in years.

  21. samh says: Mar 10, 2010 11:05 PM

Florio you’re still missing the point. It *is* irresponsible to evaluate a statement Boselli made to a specific group of people and then analyze it as though it were a press release or a speech made to the citizens of this town.
It’s OK. Everybody makes mistakes, even you and MDS.

Tampa has a QB with some ability. Big kid, rifle arm. Tore through my beloved Packers and looked good doing it!
