"Lethargy addiction" label inadvertently sticks to JaMarcus Russell

jamarcus-russell-20jpg-2c6017157335872c_medium.jpgAs Raiders coach Tom Cable continues to try to coax maximum effort and ability out of quarterback JaMarcus Russell, recently declaring that the starting job is open for competition, a joke regarding the reasons for Russell’s failure to live up to his potential has unexpectedly gotten legs in the Bay Area.

As Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle explains it, a sarcastic remark in Gary Peterson’s Bay Area News Group column regarding a rumor that Russell is being treated for “lethargy addiction” was later echoed as fact by a Bay Area sportscaster.

Oops.

The contention has since taken on a life of its own, with multiple people believing that:  (1) laziness is now recognized as a condition; (2) there’s a treatment center for it; and (3) Russell has been enrolled in it.

Meanwhile, Russell apparently has been working out in Arizona in anticipation of the 2010 season.  Or maybe he’s just at a fat camp there.

“Coming up at 11:00 . . . .  JaMarcus Russell is at a fat camp.”

UPDATE:  Here’s the video of the guy who repeated the “lethargy addiction” thing as fact, via our pal Brooks.  We hope he knows that Terry Bradshaw is still alive.

  1. It’s about time. It’s been a few days and the Raider haters are hungry for more bashing…dinner time…come and get it!

  2. “Biggest Loser in more ways than one” should be a business that Russell owns, but obviously has someone else operate.
JaMarcus, if you’re interested in starting this business, please feel free to contact me. I can design the complete operation for you!

  3. His wife checked his cell phone log and discovered he was calling Domino’s pizza multiple times per day.

  4. Only a few days late on this one, you’re getting better.
My guess is that Athletes Performance is the “Fat Camp” he’s attending. But unless they can give him a mental makeover it probably won’t help.

  5. Come on seriously you had enough articles today you didn’t need to throw in a “I hate the Raiders” article today did you?
Saying Jamarcus Russell is fat and lazy is like saying Michael Vick killed dogs….oh yeah you do seem to be a little retarded when it comes to stating the obvious in here over and over and over beating a dead horse with Brett Favre and Micheal Vick posts.
Seriously how can “You” make fun of the way anyone looks…you look like an inbreed West Virginian banjo player.
    COME ON MAN!!!!!!!

  6. Florio, I guess you can cross Oakland off the list of cities to which you can travel without fear of being thrown through a plate-glass window.

  7. The Jam Carcus Hussell is a new dance craze sweeping the Nation’s fat and lazy.
This dance was started by none other than the Oakland Raiders’ JaMarcus Russell.
It involves very little movements, usually just to scratch varying areas of the body and to whipe food particles from ones face.

  8. When he’s released from the Raiders later this year he will sue Al Davis for wrongfully firing him because of his “disability”. And since he is employed in California he will probably have a case…

  9. That shows how bad this guy has been. He has shown himself to be lazy, slow, dumb, careless, aloof, selfish, greedy, and just a lousy pro QB since the minute he was drafted. He has not shown one redeeming quality as a player or team mate in three seasons. This team would get better instantly just by releasing JaThargic. Everyone sees that, but Al.

  10. he sucks doesn’t deserve 2 be in the league has 2 be the worst pick in sports history he is just a fat lazy pice of crap who is nothing but a thief 4 stealing from the nfl

  11. he sucks doesn’t deserve 2 be in the league has 2 be the worst pick in sports history he is just a fat lazy pice of crap who is nothing but a thief 4 stealing from the nfl

  12. Wow… just think about this for a second:
This is the turd that Phil Savage wanted INSTEAD of drafting Brady Quinn. But he couldn’t figure out a way to trade up to get him.
    Savage
    1) WANTED to draft Russell.
    2) DID draft Quinn.
    3) DID sign D. Anderson to a huge deal AFTER drafiing Quinn.
Phil Savage needs to be treated for “no-talent-ass-clown QB addiction.”

  13. The sad part is, the Raiders had been showing signs of life (improved running game and defense) when Russell decided to just stop trying. That and drafting Darius Heyward Bey kept the Raiders in the cellar.

  14. Lethargy withdrawal is the worst. You can actually die from it like heroin or oxycontin withdrawal.

  15. @ swervinmervin
You are dead on about Russell. I really lol about your “JaThargic” tag… accurate, original, and freakin’ FUNNY!
    @ Florio
Accurate and funny story. This kind of stuff is what I love about your site. Best of all, your lead-in for 1100. Thanx, Mike!

  16. In their first full seasons:
    JaMarcus Russell, 2008-09: 198-for-368, 2,423 yards, 13 TDs 8 INT.
    Mark Sanchez, 2009-10: 196-for-364, 2,444 yards, 12 TDs 20 INT.
Why do people hate on Russell so much and think Sanchez is some stud??

  17. At least there’s good news: he won the pie eating contest at the treatment center, so his doctors think he’s showing some initiative.

We sure are getting dumber aren’t we? People believe anything and everything nowadays.
but i read it on the internets it must be true!!!

  19. Lethargy is a state of generalized fatigue or sluggishness and a lazy demeanor.
    This explains everything!

  20. Florio has the respect of Raider fans. J thargic is another story. Every season ticket holder I know of has refused to re up this year for the Raiders… mostly due to Russell still being employed.
Greg Papa, the radio guy, is calling the house begging everyone to renew their tickets. the raiders have had bad attendance before but Al sticking with Russell this long will cost him his fan base this year: 30-40% of them from what I have been hearing.

    Now that’s funny.

  22. Lane Kiffin told Davis that you couldn’t win with this guy. This was BEFORE they even drafted him. Lane Kiffin is the man!

    couldnt have said it better…..

  24. I understand that you didn’t want to draft Jamarcus Russell, hes a great player…get over it.
    Al Davis
    Good luck Raider Nation

  25. Welp, that explains it. He’s a lazy bum who will be out of the league in a year. What a joke!

  26. the only drugs you can die when withdrawing from are benzodiazapenes and alchohol… “lethargy addiction” is, in its simplest form, an addiction to pizza delivery so, technically, it’s not a deadly disease…

  27. valrich79
I too have boycotted the last two seasons as a past season ticket holder. I have not been to any games or bought any gear for the last two years.
I will continue my boycott until Al hires a GM.

  28. JaMarcus Russell, is by far the best Raider qb. I sure hope Mr. Davis keeps this kid around for a long time.. Here in Denver we have a lot of respect for Al Davis and his handlilng of the team.. We sure hated to see Javon Walker leave the team. We really liked him a lot..

  29. It is not Raider hating that points out what Raider fans already know. This Russell guy cost them several games. He cannot throw they ball accurately.
The less he plays the the better the Raiders perform. I would bet that if they benched him the Raiders could have a winning record in 2010.
Disappointment in Russell is not Raider hating. It is pointing out that Russell is unworthy to start for the Raiders.

  30. Tom Cable should treat hin like the rest of his bitches – slap him and hope for better results!

What was the line about “lies, damned lies and statistics”. Sanchez is a leader who had some shakey rookie moments and shows signs he will get better with experience. Russell has never been a leader and after the passable campaign you mention has regressed. I personally blame his coaching because when things have gone wrong he seems to be left to his own devices way too much.

  32. only in America would the public believe:
    (1) laziness is now recognized as a condition;
    (2) there’s a treatment center for it;
    (3) Russell has been enrolled in it.

  33. the common fan had no clue who this clown was when Al Davis started indicating he would draft him years ago. Al Davis is so dumb its not even funny. Every year 30 teams dream of winning the SB, while the raiders merely hope none of their players murder anyone and the redskins hope they can get a 50% of their returns on all their stupid contracts.

Your math skills are excellent. Can you help me solve this one: Broncos – Elway = ?

because Dirty Sanchez went to the playoffs, and the AFC Championship
but that begs the question of why the “fans” in philly hate McNabb so much……oh wait, they have no clue what is going on

  36. hey raven how is that team in denver? 2 years in a row having at least a 2 game lead and you lose the division and miss the playoffs. lol.
might i add that russell beat your team to help knock you out of the playoffs.
    edgarsnyder you are an idiot!

  37. Florio:
Wait a second. Are you reporting that a reporter reported a rumor as fact and people believed it?
When it comes to the Raiders, that is what your entire website is based on. All you do is post rumor after rumor without ever checking on credibility. Most recently, according to your website, Seymour never wanted to be a Raider (but your website didnt post his comments about wanting to re-sign as a Raider until months later), you havent read the pertinent part of the CBA that allows the NFLPA to file greivances without a players consent, Cable was going to be fired, and Nnamdi was going to be a Jet (even though he said he was joking and just a likely wanted Revis to be a Raiderl; p.s. powder puff doll Cromartie is now a Jet, but apparently PFT never saw that one coming).
Considering PFT’s body of work when it comes to the Raiders, I think you should back off on calling out reporters that jump the gun and make outrageously wrong reports.
    Florio, step your game up!
    P.S. Richard Seymour says hello.

Because 1) Sanchez has a winning record as a QB, despite the individual stats, what about JR?
    2) When Sanchez was screwing up and throwing picks, he acted like he felt bad about it, what about JR?
    3) When Sanchez was screwing up and throwing picks, he was part of the solution for fixing it – he worked hard and dedicated himself to getting better and he did, what about JR?
    That’s the difference.

  39. yeah he wouldn’t put my posts up. not only do you “report” biased articles even when you are wrong in your “article” you won’t even post opposing viewpoints. very professional.
and hey Denver fans…how does it feel to suffer at the hands of Jfata$$ AT HOME!!!! bet that really stings huh? LOL jamarcus kept denver out of the playoffs going into that 2-8 skidmark you finished the season with! 1 more win and you might have been playoff bound! LOL

  40. EdgarSnyder
Teams that have murderers on them would be Baltimore Cleavland and the Rams or the old 70’s Bills
    Rapists would be Pittsburgh

you have to be specific! jacarcus or florio?

  42. So the man is at a training camp right after the season ends to try and improve which has been the major knock on the man and all the media can do is find a way to bash him and the raiders at the same time. It is getting old!!

  43. i get a kick out of this….how many people if they win the lotto are not going to get lazy…….especially when you are a kid.
That is why all future nfl players are screwed. The owners want a rookie cap, and every member in the players association will get more if the rookies get less…
the only one surprising enough are the attorney’s who want these kids who have not proved a darn thing in the NFL to be the highest paid players at their positions in the nfl…
maybe if you have to earn the lotto, things would be different for J-Russ and the raiders.

And yet, somehow, the Raiders and Jafatone were good enough to beat your Donkeys last year. Where does that leave you ?

  45. why does this site hate the raiders? ok we get it you hate jamarcus but your golden boy “big ben” is a rapist.
And by the way if jamarcus was white you would never say anything about being lazy.
I dont like Russell myself he wont be the the starter, but you can not blame Mr Davis for taking him. Every “draft expert” said he was the best qb in that class. If the pats took him and he turned out to be a bust you wouldnt hear a word about it.
THE BRUCE IS LOOSE THIS YEAR!!!
OAKLAND RAIDERS WILL BE THE NEXT SUPERBOWL CHAMPS. AND ALL YOUR SISTERS AND GIRLFROENDS LIKE BIG BLACK GUYS, ITS A WHITE GIRLS DREAM TO BE WITH A BLACK MAN! AND YOU HATE TO ADMIT IT

  46. Look, Russell hasn’t helped himself but let’s get real about what the Raiders did for him. In the first place, Al Davis drafted him without signing him before the draft. That resulted in a holdout that didn’t end until AFTER the season had started. You don’t want ANY of your first round picks to miss that kind of time but to allow the FIRST pick and a QB at that, stay on the sidelines that long is STUPID.
Then they hired John DeFilippo, age 29, to be his “mentor” and that didn’t work out and he was eventually let go (Ironically, the Jets hired him last year BUT as an assistant QB coach and let him go after this season). They finally hired a more experienced QB coach but they didn’t help themselves by putting him in charge of him for that long.
Russell’s problems have been more his fault BUT the organization didn’t help him at all. Maybe he finally wakes up and gets his ass in gear because despite what some of you think, he DOES have the talent to be an NFL starter and if he gets into the film room and works on his game, he could be a pretty good player (Of course, it would help if he doesn’t have to throw to DHB and for those of you who don’t believe that’s a handicap, remember, the OTHER QBs didn’t have to deal with him after they took over for Russell. The team phased him out AND Schilens finally came back to give them another reliable receiver).
