Report: Delhomme will visit the Browns

nfl_delhomme1_250.jpgAs the Browns systematically run out of town the two quarterbacks between whom past regimes in Cleveland consistently could not choose, they’re now planning to kick the tires of a guy who’d otherwise be paid $12.7 million in 2010 to do nothing.

Former Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme will visit the Browns on Thursday, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  (The news also has been subsequently reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.)

Delhomme had moments of quality play during his career in Carolina, helping the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003.  But he has been mediocre-to-bad lately, with a horrendous performance in the 2008 playoffs followed by a very bad 2009 season in Charlotte.

In Cleveland, he’d compete with Seneca Wallace to be the starter, assuming that Brady Quinn is traded.

For some reason, we doubt that Browns fans will be feeling any better about their prospects at the position.

Delhomme?!?! Christ, you gotta be kidding me. Someone needs to put the crack pipe down and slowly back away from the free agent telephone.

  3. rodstiffington says: Mar 10, 2010 5:04 PM

If they’re giving this has-been a shot, can I try out? I mean I could throw 4-5 picks a game for a fraction of the cost…

  4. ezcheese69 says: Mar 10, 2010 5:05 PM

Please Don’t sign him. I think all this would be is getting an older Anderson. Yeah he had a couple of good years, but I’d rather give Troy Smith a shot than get Delhomme.

Have you forgot about this thing called the NFL Draft? I highly doubt Delhomme and Wallace were brought in to be a starter. They will be there to mentor the young QB that is drafted.

For some reason, I agree. Anderson gone-yes! Seneca Wallace? Quinn going, dunno. Delhomme? Holmgrem IS a qb guru, right? I hear DR. Dave Mays is coming in Friday.

  10. Audient says: Mar 10, 2010 5:09 PM

It really depends what Delhomme’s purpose would be.
If he’s coming to be a transitional starter for a few games while a franchise QB is groomed, then ok.
Or if he is coming to be a veteran presence who can double as mentor to a young starter, that could be a good fit too.
I don’t think anyone is thinking that he’s coming here to be the franchise QB.

In a related story, the Browns have contacted the agents for Scott Mitchell and Elvis Grbac.

He had a bad year last year starting with the playoff game yes, but he is a tremendous person and would help a lot in the LR also. One bad year doesn’t make a guy a bad player.

And St Louis trades the number one pick in the 2010 draft for Cleveland’s #7, a third round pick, and Brady Quinn…

  26. mnmaverick says: Mar 10, 2010 5:27 PM

Great fit in my opinion. The Browns haven’t had a QB since Bernie Kosar was behind center.
Delhomme would bring some respectability back to Cleveland. It’s just a start. The Vikings might be tempted to trade Sage Rosenfels for Quinn. That would give the Browns a legitimate back-up and give the Vikes a young QB with promise who has been groomed for a few years.

  27. Cbrownstown says: Mar 10, 2010 5:28 PM

Ok no to vick ? No to kolb? No to mcnabb? No to even smith ? Let’s take in Wallace and a has been delhomme come on I’m starting to have my doubts ! There is just to much to fix in one year ! Is leaf busy I think we should take him or how about he call up the 14 year old USC signed see If he wants to play….. Hasselbeck sounds good right now

  28. Chrisbelb says: Mar 10, 2010 5:29 PM

Hello, people….”stop gap.” It’s not like there are a WHOLE lot of other options out there for the Browns to choose from. Bring him in, draft a young gun, run a conservative offense for a year, and hand the reins to the young fella in week 10-11. The blueprint is pretty common.

Is it possible that throughout Jake Delhomme’s career he came across anyone who sucked more moose cock than he did that we might be able to get in touch with? Perhaps we can find someone with less talent who is unemployed that may want to QB our team?

  33. CLESection350 says: Mar 10, 2010 5:34 PM

They won’t go after Troy Smith cause he sucks! Troy Smith will be Seneca Wallace in 6 years if he’s lucky. Strong arm, mobile, etc. At least Seneca has the veteran experience and knowledge of the offense.

  34. WarrenMoonGOAT says: Mar 10, 2010 5:34 PM

  35. CLESection350 says: Mar 10, 2010 5:35 PM

Delhomme has nothing left in the tank. This would be a horrible move.

  36. poppinfresh64 says: Mar 10, 2010 5:39 PM

It says he is going to VISIT not sign a long term contract. The Browns WILL get another veteran after they trade Quinn as well but our Q.B. of the future will be picked in the 3rd round of this years draft. We have our pick and the Jets pick from the Braylon(stonehands) Edwards trade.Pike would be sweet if he is still there.U of Washington Q.B and Michigan State Q.B. should be there as well.It seems Philly does not want to part with Kolb or McNabb but draft day trades always happen when a team is desperate to move to get a player they really want.

  37. ZombieRevolution says: Mar 10, 2010 5:40 PM

Unless things change quickly it does not matter who they have for QB- Tom Brady would have a hard time making much with that bunch and that OLine might get him killed.

  38. Thomas Paquette says: Mar 10, 2010 5:40 PM

Somebody, i think Joshua, mentioned mentoring a QB that could be taken in the draft. I do agree with that. I am a Cincinnati fan but think about it, Carson Palmer was mentored by Jon Kitna. Carson has said that is the best thing that has happened to him (sitting out a year that is.) You bring in Jake the Snake and he could really do good for a young QB. I don’t know much about Wallace but maybe he could do the same? Anyone disagree? You may not even have to go into the draft; maybe the clowns, I mean Browns, have one of those guys mentor Quinn. It’s just a thought.

  39. Cincinnasty says: Mar 10, 2010 5:42 PM

  40. Tdk24 says: Mar 10, 2010 5:42 PM

  41. DB26 says: Mar 10, 2010 5:48 PM

If we are getting an older Anderson w/Delhomme, then we just shit on and let go one find prospect in DA because Delhomme has had a great NFL career. I am surely not a Browns fan due to good company, cause most of you are ignorant people!

  42. DolphinDan says: Mar 10, 2010 5:53 PM

The Browns are at it again.. First holmgren gives a WR who went undrafted in 2005 a 3 year 20 mil contract because he can return kicks. To put this into perspective, Mike Williams, the Biggest bust at WR of that same 05 draft has more catches, yards and as many touchdowns receiving as Cribbs. Williams has been out of the league since 07. Then Holmgren gets nostalgic and gets Wallace pretty much for free. Which is just about what he is worth on the field, nothing. Now he wants to grab this has been. The Browns will be even worse this year.

Did you actually watch the games? Browns gave up just 30 sacks last year. Better than 21 other teams. For all their problems, pass protection isn’t one of them.

  44. jamaltimore says: Mar 10, 2010 6:01 PM

With all the fun listening to the PIG BEN stories I almost missed this one!! Can it get any worse than being a Browns FAN! Jake delhomme, senneca wallace or Brady Quinn. Is it any wonder Modell moved from that city??? There must be a curse of stupidity that spreads across the the lake and right into Browns HQ on a daily basis!
Seriously, if Jake doesn’t work out there’s still cleo lemmon! Maybe you’ll get really lucky and Troy SMITH will finally crawl all the way there so you can spend 3 more years watching another failed QB project. The last 3rd string Raven you picked up did ok?
In the end don’t worry your 4th Place finish in the AFC north is a LOCK!

  45. Cincinnasty says: Mar 10, 2010 6:05 PM

Holmgrem has repeatedly said he doesn’t want a QB competition.. He’s looking to FA for a starting QB… Vick IMO is the best they could possibly acquire..

Of course he didn’t watch any of the games and doesn’t have a clue what the Browns pass protection is like… just like the 400 other jackasses hat love to leave snide, infantile comments about a team with which they have no clue what’s really going on. Basically, the formula is “take whatever you know about the (insert team name here) that was going on a year, or 2 or 3 years ago, and pretend it’s what’s relavent to right now”.

Cribbs is better then anyone on your offense not named Ronnie Brown, oh yeah, he is a free agent. Furthermore, his contract has 7.5 million guaranteed, you do realize how this whole “guaranteed” thing works, right? Think, re-think, and THEN type.

  49. SF Saints Fan says: Mar 10, 2010 6:25 PM

Delhomme had a terrible year last year, but what does Cleveland have to lose. They do not have a legitimate starting QB on their roster, Anderson Quinn and Wallace combined are not worth a 3rd round draft choice, so why not see if Jake has anything left in the tank. Sign him to a veteran minimum contract loaded with incentives based on wins and TD/INT ratio. If he blows in training camp and pre-season, cut him and owe him nothing. Carolina will be paying him anyway.
This is a no lose situation for the Browns or whoever else signs this guy. He will either still blow like last year (59.4 rating), or he will be the QB he was 3-4 years ago; ’06 -82.6 rating limited ’07 – 111.8 rating, ’08 – 84.7 rating.

  53. Cbrownstown says: Mar 10, 2010 6:39 PM

In all realness vick is the best fit if your going the wildcat route…. I have a shorty feeling tebow is there next idea we have 11 picks and everyone needs to be a good one ???? Trade up in the first round and give a 3rd is Bradford is that important holmgren knows that offense well ! I still say berry first then ford sneed or whoever I’m sick of watching them lose every year bit I did see the potential against the steelers

  54. aceman309 says: Mar 10, 2010 6:42 PM

    NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy is a proven interception machine.
You just got rid of Anderson, and now you want to bring in a guy who throws even more picks per attempts.
Please . When will this nightmare end????
Just start BQ if that is the best you can get.

  55. momar3000 says: Mar 10, 2010 6:52 PM

As a Ravens fan, this is not good. I know Delhome was bad last year and Wallace isnt that good, but DID ANYONE WATCH ANDERSON AND QUINN LAST YEAR????
This is easily an upgrade, and it shows me that Holmgren is atleast smarter than the last guy running the Browns (not a tough thing i know). In person, I saw Quinn throw an INT on a 3 yrd pass!! And Kyle Boller is better than Derek Anderson (also got booed while hurt).
    LETS GO FLACCO!

  56. Joe Abraham says: Mar 10, 2010 6:53 PM

I don’t think the Browns are going to find their answer at QB this year… But if they can realize for a second that they have holes to fill OTHER than the QB- they might actually get better for once… Why couldn’t I be a freaking Steelers fan or something…

  57. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 10, 2010 6:54 PM

Delhomme fits in with the current offensive roster. The Browns have a big offensive line, good pass protection, good running game, tall receivers on the outside.
Seneca Wallace knows the West Coast system cold but the Browns don’t have enough receivers to make that work properly.
So probably Delhomme, if he signs, will be named starter with Wallace coming for ten plays to run a wildcat/spread option variant with Josh Cribbs. If Delhomme crashes and burns or Wallace really catches fire, Wallace will be promoted to starter. Similar story played out with Trent Dilfer/Matt Hasselbeck in Seattle.

  58. pilot08 says: Mar 10, 2010 7:05 PM

I hope Jake gets the job.

  59. aceman309 says: Mar 10, 2010 7:06 PM

The thought of Derek Anderson no longer in a Browns uniform troubles us terribly.
DA has been instrumental in our careers. I believe about 75% of our pick sixes have been gifts from DA.
    He will be missed.
Signed Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed.
P.S I think we can work with Jake Delhomme though.

  60. diegoecheverria says: Mar 10, 2010 7:59 PM

if delhomme stays healthy the browns could go with a really good season, at least over .500
delhomme has been inconsistent because of two things mainly,
    1) injuries
    2) bad playcalling
the thing i like most about jake is his spirit, he can lighten a locker room, and those things you can`t see in stats. he is an example of working up his career, whith not much athletic talent but a lot of temple and head.
i think he could fit well into holmgren west coast style

  61. RavenFan says: Mar 10, 2010 9:33 PM

  62. tobago says: Mar 10, 2010 10:16 PM

Holmgren knows best, and best is NOT signing this guy

  63. Haverstaken says: Mar 10, 2010 11:00 PM

I hope if they bring Delhomme to Cleveland, he serves as a mentor for Quinn, and use Wallace only for wildcat… then release Ratliff. If Holmgren dont want go with Quinn, so trade him and release Ratliff and draft a QB. The solution for the QB position, isnt Delhomme, not even Seneca.

  67. Dawgpound2009 says: Mar 11, 2010 3:13 PM

Quinn is bad. Anderson was worse and you are looking at bringing in Jake Delhomme? Right now Seneca Wallace is looking like Joe Namath.
Delhomme’s best days are far far behind him. There will be no Favre-like Renaissance! I guess Holmgren Roethlisberger-esqe spill on his motorcycle like weekend and conked his coconut majorly. And there is anyone resembling Steve Smith on the Browns roster. Let alone a running game behind whomever the Browns name their starting QB. They might as well start shoveling the dirt on Mangini’s coaching grave again in Cleveland.
I am not sure Troy Smith would be much better but he has to have a hell of a lot more upside then Jake Del Homme. It would be hilarious if between Quinn-Delhomme and Wallace, Delhomme won the job! lol The Titanic sails again !
