Vick says he displayed courage, sportsmanship, leadership

In a setting that for some reason reminds us of the old Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, here’s Eagles quarterback Mike Vick receiving the team’s Ed Block Courage Award in Baltimore on Tuesday night.

“My peers felt like I was doing the right thing,” Vick said.  “Felt like I displayed courage and sportsmanship and leadership.”

Still, it’s hard to call a guy courageous when the obstacles he overcame were the product of a six-year lifestyle premised on gambling and animal cruelty.  Of his own making.

Any mention of Michael Vick still makes me reflect to that scene with Aunt Edna scowling Clark after he “accidently” left the dog tied to the rear bumper in, “National Lampoon’s Vacation”.
    “Doggg Killler!”

Is this sort of like giving Nobel Peace Prizes to Al Gore and Barrack Obama?
Stop the world, I want to get off.

  8. Bun McSticky says: Mar 10, 2010 12:04 PM

What is he supposed to think? Everyone around him told him how ‘courageous’ he was during this….surround yourself with yes men and this is what you get.

  9. SterilizeTHenry says: Mar 10, 2010 12:04 PM

Well said Florio. Vick is a scumbag. Always has been, always will be. If he knew he could get away with dogfighting, he would still be doing it. He hasn’t changed at all.

  10. metalhead0043 says: Mar 10, 2010 12:04 PM

Well, it sure is nice of him to say those things about himself. What an arrogant tool. I wish he’d just shut up.

  11. Catamount says: Mar 10, 2010 12:05 PM

Courage? Maybe, owning up to and paying for his crime. Sportsmanship? You rarely played! You had no choices to make. Leadership? Look that word up, Vick. You have never been a leader.
Bottom line: You are trying to milk a contract out of someone before you are too old. You will ultimately be a rags to riches to rags story, a suitable premise for Steve Martin’s sequel to “The Jerk.”

SO should he continue to be a THUG????? Does he move forward and CONTINUE to do the things he has been doing……
Again if you are willing to give your child another chance and support him/her in a rode to recovery then whats wrong with Vick trying to correct his past by living a much better future???
you know sometime I feel people want some of these guys to continue to get in trouble just so all can hear “I TOLD YOU SO”

Vick is a charasmatic sociopath. His propaganda (AKA The Michael Vick Project) is a complete play at getting sympathy from the black community. That show is vomit inducing fabricated fiction. I hope he gets a chance to start and falls right on his face. Then he’ll find someone else to blame because he thinks he is the greatest of all time.

  17. bluestree says: Mar 10, 2010 12:08 PM

Then again, what does that say about his peers? Maybe they should have voted for someone more deserving.
Big Ben might get this award in 2012.

Where did Vick say that HE displayed those qualities? That’s ok. You just misquoted him. That’s like me taking the following blog entry, “Vick says he displayed courage, sportsmanship, leadership,” and I come out and say, “Mike Florio thinks that Vick displayed courage, sportsmanship, leadership.”
Vick is a scumbag, but that doesn’t mean you have to misquote him.

  28. chem says: Mar 10, 2010 12:11 PM

If he had any courage at all, he would have declined the award and deferred to a deserving individual. That would been the mature, sportsmanlike thing to do in this circumstance. And, it would have been an indication that he was “getting it.” Totally classless and clueless. Seeya, wouldn’t wanna beya!

  54. KingJoe! says: Mar 10, 2010 12:35 PM

What Vick did to dogs is beyond horrible. However, society’s attitude towards convicted felons is counter productive and perpetuates crime.
Vick is courageous given the circumstances. His ability to stand up to relentless ridicule is hard even for someone of his previous stature.
What does our society want? Do we put all criminals on an island and blow it up or are we truly about rehabiliation? If our society wants to rehabilate, we need to show those convicted of crimes that if they work hard and stay clear of further issues we will accept them back into society.
This badgering of Vick demostrates to other felons that they might as well not change their ways and continue to commit crime, because it will never get better.

The fact that Vick, the Eagles, or anyone else for that matter, believe that paying your debt to society and making good on your promises only after criminal charges makes you courageous illustrates the ignorance of a certain group of people in this country. You put yourself in this position, nobody did this to you, it’s your damn fault.. you do the best you can going forward but nobody is going to give you a gold medal for working toward being a respectable human being. I commend Vick for correcting his past mistakes and hope he is successful both in his personal life and professional, but to think you deserve an award for doing it is disgusting.

These same nitwits have no problem that murderer OJ stays in the HOF but for God’s sake don’t let Pete Rose in HOF because of…gambling??!!

The team signed Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson for last season. That about sums up the moral fiber of the Cowboys. Saying that they’re not on the current roster doesn’t mean the Cowboys have changed their philosophy on scumbags. It just means that they cut the scumbags because they couldn’t play.

They should have shipped his ass off to Iraq or Afghanistan then he could have seen what a real hero is like. He is a poor excuse for a black man and does not deserve an award for courage. He wasn’t so much imprisoned for killing dogs as he was for lying. Bottom line is that when you are asked by the feds about something you are so obviously doing wrong, DON’T LIE to them you stupid son of a bi^ch. I am not a cowboy fan nor a white man, but men like Roger Staubach embody what a man should be like and how courage should be determined in the NFL. The man served his country, won a Heisman trophy, and conducted himself with integrity and honor. This should be the standard, not just simply stepping on the field after serving time in prison.

Serious fixes are needed in the nomination process for this one…like the nominators being fired…right now.
In that perfect world, you’d have to show courage to be awarded for it…right?
What a slam to all the folks that actually earned this award in the past.

Ohhhhhh. I get it. Since people are dying and starving no one should ever complain about a convicted dog-fighting dog killer who receives an award for courage? Is that your point?
    If so, it’s wicked stupid.
And for the record, I think you can find multiple stories on Roethlisberger on this very site. And many people are condemning his alleged actions. I say alleged because nothing’s been proven.. Unlike Vick’s case.
And Ray Lewis? Really? That was about 9 years ago and Florio had a post on it THIS WEEK. You really think no one’s bringing it up? Open your eyes.

Rename it after a fallen HERO. The PAT TILLMAN AWARD would be a good place to start thinking. He is a man who embodied courage as well. Do you think that Michael Vick would ever turn down a contract in the NFL to serve his country? I doubt it.

Actually, Kyle Kosier won it for Dallas. They gave out a special one for JOE DeCamillis.

Oh shut up people, seriously. Does America need someone to hate that bad? OMG he did something against the law and went to prison for it, I guess he should never experience happiness again in his life huh? People can be so pathetic at times I swear…
    —————————
Yeah, that’s right. We don’t want him to be happy. That’s what this is about.
No, the outrage is about the decision of the Eagles players to make a mockery of what’s supposed to be an honor. And some of it is about Vick’s lack of common sense in his decision to accept it. Any rational, remorseful human being in his position would’ve declined. He should’ve realized he’d actually get a LOT more good PR by showing humility and turning it down.

Take a look at the PFT most commented. The 10 most commented posts over the last week or so. 5 of 10 are about Roethlisberger. 1 is actually about Ray Lewis, even though his ordeal was 9 years ago.
Care to revise your statement about no one caring about those guys?

So what? Probably more than 70% of the people haven’t given up their livelihoods in which they earn a fraction of those guys make to serve their country. It’s stupid to make that argument because it can be said about anyone. Probably yourself included. If you have served or are in the army, disregard the previous sentence. Other than that, the point that Vick wouldn’t give up a contract to serve his country only shows he and many millions of people don’t have the same mindset as Tillman. I’m sure there are a bunch of people in the army who would jump at the chance to make millions as opposed to serving their country. Doesn’t make them any less honorable.

I HOPE SOMEBODY GOES AND PROTEST Ben Roethlisberger FOR RAPING WOMEN LIKE HE’S Pepe Le Pew!!!!! and Mark McGuire to sense you missed heckling him because he left before you found out. If Ben can play then Adam “Pacman” Jones can to. They gave pacman an “Outside the Lines” report but Floyd Landis an Ben get a line across the screen. Look at the leader of 2 Superbowl for the Steeler taking Pu$$y but Nancy Grace comes out for Tiger Woods, Chris Brown, Kobe, Vick and even Charles Barkley but no Roethlisberger media monster to feed!! Where is Roger Clemens’ “Game of Shadows”. You haters are funny like that. The media monster is chasing Glenn Beck’s viewers and rating. I see now. Bottom line is that if Ben can be the face of a franchise then I think Adam “Pacman” Jones can play and Vick hurt dogs but Ben rapes women!!!!!!

    @midnite,
“This POS would still be violently abusing dogs if he had not gotten caught.”
That’s perfect – and 100% accurate – he NEVER did one day for setting animals on fire & attaching electrodes to their balls – he lied to everyone after he did it & would STILL BE DOING it if he hadn’t been caught.
I see a lot of posts here telling others to let it go but none of the MV support group will ever directly handle him setting sick animals on fire or electrocuting them. They blame others for being outraged. Anyone that defends MV is just like him a POS.
AS for Roethlisburger, go post there about what he did/does, Roethlisburger has nothing to do with MV except to use him as a deflection, smoke screen to try & minimize MV’s behavior.

  99. JunkYardDogg1156 says: Mar 11, 2010 7:54 PM

    @jimicos
He won’t revise that statement cause it’s not about Roethlisburger, it about just defending his homey, just another way to switch the focus from the horrific cruelty that is MV.

Google search animal cruelty – domestic violence link.
What happens when people no longer get satisfaction from beating animals? They move on to bigger things or do both simultaneously, just depends which one they get caught for first.

  101. SmackMyVickUp.com says: Mar 12, 2010 8:50 AM

It does take courage and leadership to sustain a dogfighting/gambling ring for so long. Just not much brains.
Wouldn’t call it a sport so wouldn’t say sportsmanship, but I am sure Vick can make the link it his own little world.
