Wilfork says, "If you don't want to win, you don't need to be here"

NFL_wilfork2_250.jpgPatriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork, freshly signed to a long-term deal, conducted a conference call on Wednesday with the media.  Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald attended, and he has transcribed the part where Wilfork talks about doing whatever needs to be done to win.

Pats fans, enjoy.

“As players, we’re going to have to start in the offseason training, and basically, everybody is going to have to be accountable,” Wilfork said.  “If you’re on the field, you have to give me 100.  You have to give me 100 percent.  Always.  We have to weed out the bad seeds, point blank.  If you can’t give me what I’m giving you on the field, I don’t need you on the field with me.  Point blank.  That’s how you win.”

We’re not sure whether Wilfork is talking about any specific player, but given that one of the more notorious players on the team was perceived to be dogging it in 2009 and recently claimed that the Patriots don’t pay anyone, we’ve got a feeling that Wilfork might have one or two guys in mind.

You’re barking up the wrong tree, Florio. He’s talking about Derrick Burgess and Adalius Thomas, for starters.

    Randy Moss?

Nice speculation except for the fact that he specifically listed Moss – along with Brady – as one of the leaders on the team.

  8. Mikey D says: Mar 10, 2010 12:19 PM

Er, Mike? Except he goes on to cite Randy as one of the respected leaders of the team.
He left Minny five years ago Mike. Time to let go.

Easy for Wilfork to say now that he “got his”…….I wonder what tune he would be singing if the Pat’s wouldn’t have just given him the big new contract.

He’s a nose tackle. He’s not likely to have 10-12 sacks per year. His job is to clog the middle, stop the run and occupy 2 offensive lineman. LOLOLOLOLOL. Whatever.

He’s got to be talking about Adalius Thomas. Although Moss appeared to be dogging it, post season info revealed an injury.

    @ Watson
You’re showing a total lack of football knowledge with your comments. By 7.5 “stats” I’m assuming you mean “sacks” First of all he has 7.5 sacks in his career, only 4 in the past 3 years.
Casey Hampton has 4 in the past 3 years
Jamal Williams has 1.5 in the past 3 years
Aubrayo Franklin has 3 in the past 3 years
All of these guys are regarded as some of the best NT’s in the league. NT’s aren’t there for stats, they’re there to stuff the run and clog the lanes for the LB’s to run free

  29. TommyEhrlich says: Mar 10, 2010 12:35 PM

He probably got more sacks for him while he was playing Madden though…hah

  30. Katmanduu says: Mar 10, 2010 12:35 PM

What a typical Patsie douche. Isn’t this the same clown who was pissing and moaning about being underappreciated and not showing up for activities until he got a new contract? Now that he “has his”, he’s now the team spokeman on knowing what it takes to be a Patsie.
Too bad this team is headed for sucksville.

  31. Paul_R. says: Mar 10, 2010 12:38 PM

“A lot of guys are not used to seeing young leaders,” he said. “All the leaders we had was older guys. Rodney, (Richard) Seymour, Bruschi, Vrabel. You name it, they were older guys not here anymore. But now you’re starting to see younger guys becoming leaders earlier. It don’t take seven, eight, nine years now to be a leader. We’re a young ballclub. But guess what? These young players we have — (Jerod) Mayo, (Brandon) Meriweather, Ty (Warren), myself, got Tom (Brady), got Randy (Moss). You have guys in this locker room that knows what it takes to win. You just gotta trust it. And we as players and as the leaders of our team. We got to ask more of ourselves and of each other. Coaches coach, players play. … We all got to be on the same page.”
I think you may have missed this, Mike.

  35. Snowplow says: Mar 10, 2010 12:44 PM

7.5 stats? Can you name them? What’s a half stat?
BTW- Vince Wilfork has no business carrying the football.. No wonder he fumbled. I agree with you on that one.

  36. pfii63 says: Mar 10, 2010 12:45 PM

This is the type of leadership we need from Vince. Now that he has the contract, it is time for him to take over the locker room. Since Burgess isn;t under contract and it is pretty clear that he is talking a defensive player (let it go, Florio), I hope Adalius is on notice. Play or retire, but we own your sorry rights.
And everyone has done a good job of calling out Watson on not knowing what role a NT fills in a 3-4 scheme, but I just gotta say – wow, what an idiot!

  40. troy brown80 says: Mar 10, 2010 12:47 PM

randy moss was dogging it so much that he played (at a pretty high level) most of the season with a separated shoulder that required offseason surgery. most likely vince is aiming more at some of the younger guys who need to step it up, especially on d

  41. Deeznutz says: Mar 10, 2010 12:50 PM

He is talking about Adalius, you dumbasses, not the guy who led the league in TDs this year.
Florio, cut the shit with Moss. You selectively edited the interview to make it seem like Moss was bitching when he wasn’t. I know you want page views and making up controversy will get that (and got me), but stop it already. Its borderline obsessive at this point.

  45. Schwankdaddy says: Mar 10, 2010 1:03 PM

He should be talking about himself. He’s overweight and looked overmatched against the Ravens in the playoffs. Adalius may be the scapegoat – but NE’s D is bottom tier, and Wilfork will be a bust for that money.

Vince never held out and participated in activities etc. and stated that he intended to honor his contract no matter what. He did say he felt undervalued, and that he deserved better than the franchise tag, and he was correct. He was patient and got what he deserved. Get your facts straight before commenting on a team you don’t follow. Big Vince has always been a locker room leader and I am very glad that he is taking a stand.

  54. JakeDSnake says: Mar 10, 2010 1:57 PM

Ever since Florio got paid by NBC he shoots his mouth off about Randy Moss.
I read the title and Wilfork’s (partial) quote and was thinking about Adalius Thomas the entire time, then Florio throws out his Freeman card (again, for the comments hits) – then to find out that any half-assing slappy who can read would have known that Wilfork specifically cited Moss as someone who does lead…?
But that said, I agree who the other guy who said Wilfork should not be carrying the ball, but only one fumble in three years isn’t too bad. The half stat Wilfork had was for the knee shot to Losman, who was only half a QB.

I really can’t believe PFT seems to hate Randy Moss so much. Did he break your heart when he left the Vikings years ago?
The most talented WR ever to get over 100 TDs in his career and a random blog trashes him. Sad.
I completely agree with Wilfork though. Some people need to stop going through the motions.

  57. azure says: Mar 10, 2010 2:10 PM

Every single player needs an attitude like that. Randy (I play when I want to play) Moss needs Wilfork to pile drive him into the ground. These damn greedy, crybaby, “need” more money players need to understand that it is a PRIVILEGE not a right to play in the NFL. I am hoping for a lockout season to teach these crybabies a lesson. The only way to make people learn is to hit them where it counts, their wallets.

I would have to say that being the 5th best in points allowed, considering they could rusher the passer to save their lives, was pretty impressive. It is only going to get better if they get some pass rushers….just saying

DoctorK when the Jets actually take the division from the Pats then they are the class. Hasn’t happened yet.
The Jets D is mighty scary, I’ll give you that, but let’s see how this actually shakes out. Everyone thought the Phins had the division dominance but they took a step back. The division got much better in the last two seasons which is a good thing…
