Delhomme to visit Saints next

Jake Delhomme may be coming home.

After spending Thursday in Cleveland, NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports that Delhomme will take a visit with the Saints this weekend.

A native of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Delhomme started his career as a practice squad player with the Saints and then a backup under offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy.

Delhomme has an interesting choice to make if the Browns and Saints both give him a contract offer.  He could have a chance to start in Cleveland or chase a ring as a clear backup with his hometown team.  (Wonder which choice his extended family is rooting for?)

Delhomme’s scheduled visit is the clearest sign yet the Saints would like to upgrade from Mark Brunell at their backup quarterback spot. It’s about time.

UPDATE: Delhomme is also expected to visit Denver and Green Bay, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.  That’s a lot of visits.  Bet he doesn’t make all of them.

UPDATE II
: He won’t visit the Packers.  Do we win the bet?

as long as he doesn’t play, i’ve got no problem with this. he can hold the ball for Garrett Hartley, right? right?

Delhomme is not what I call an “upgrade” from anyone

Please, please, PLEASE, Saints, offer him $1 more than Cleveland.

    Welcome home Jake

This makes more sense than Cleveland. Jake might actually have to play in Cleveland. He would never sniff the field in New Orleans unless Drew Brees was carted off with multiple broken bones.
It would even be sort of feel good story if the Saints manage to win another SB, given that he’s from Louisiana and all and that he started his pro career there.

Please Holmgren do not sign this guy. He’s an older version of Anderson. I dont think Seneca is the answer or Quinn but geeeez are u serious with Delhomme? Are u high…This would be worse than draftng David Veikune in round 2 last year.

What, Brees didn’t throw enough INTs last year so they’re bringing in Jake to teach him better technique ?

Hey everyone calm down he still has to visit the Broncos and as a Bronco foan I hope we DO pick him up. Definite improvement and I won’t say where the improvement is :} I supose everyone else will be loud enough about who he can replace…..

I think this would be a solid addition. Delhomme is a backup at this point of his career anyway and is a much better option than Brunell. He also has plenty of experience in the nfc south if (God forbid) anything happened to the Breesus. Come on home Snake

he will start at least 6 games for the saints

In a time of high gasoline costs, can someone truly justify this trip?

    @Riddlecleve
No doubt,…I had to look Veikune up and he was a second rounder,…unreal!

I think he is an improvement over Brunell. He’s younger, and while he may have had an off year last year I believe he can at least be a very good backup QB. I’d have a lot more faith in him than Brunell if Brees ever goes down. Delhomme might not have been stellar last year but at least he started a lot of the games. When is the last time Brunell started a meaningful game?

Well…if Drew gets the Madden cover (GOD FORBID) or gets injured without it anyway, Jake can fill in quite well, as long as we run the ball more. He did lead the Panthers the SB in ’05, but Carolina never had a decent offense ever since then.
How sweet is it we had to deal with Jim Haslett playing an injured Aaron Brooks those measly 4 seasons when Delhomme should’ve been playing, only for Drew Brees to come in and lead the team to NFCC games & a SB championship, just for Jake to come back and be Drew’s clipboard holder. LOL

Not relace Orton, Simms is awful on a good day. Simms has ZERO confidence after that spleen injury. Orton is no Montana or Elway, but better than Delhomme. KyleOrtonsArm yelling anything doesn’t change the truth. Why defend Simms anyways? Odd……….

So many Delhomme haters here. The guy is better than most backups and just needs to get in a new situation. HOWEVER I think he needs to go to a team with a true #1 threat (which the browns don’t) because Jake is not great after his first read. (See: Jake forcing it to Smith so often). Even when Moose was the #1, Jake could never develop well with the other receivers brought in (although he made Keary Colbert look great as a rookie). Give Jake a chance!!

Saints would be smart to sign Delhomme. I know Brees is a top tier guy, but if he got hurt, the drop off wouldn’t be that severe with Jake, as oppossed to Brunell which would be a loss against 75% of the NFL.
