If no deal gets done in Minnesota, L.T. will head to NYC

L_Tomlinson_1.jpgAs it turns out, L.T. could be returning to the Meadowlands.

Not the original L.T., who played for the Giants.  The new L.T., the nine-year veteran tailback and 2006 NFL MVP who is perched at eighth place on the all-time rushing list.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Tomlinson is scheduled to visit the Jets on Friday, if no deal is consummated in Minnesota.

But if the Jets weren’t willing to pay Thomas Jones $5.8 million for 2010, they likely won’t cough up big money for L.T.  (It’s also possible that the Jets had a chance to pay Jones the same two-year, $5 million package he received from the Chiefs; if they opted not to do so, it’s unlikely that they would make a similar offer to Tomlinson.)

Apart from the money, Tomlinson wouldn’t be overshadowed by any of the team’s other running backs in New York, and he possibly could set himself up to make a bunch of extra cash in the many off-field opportunities that the Big Apple presents.  Also, the Jets climbed as far as the Vikings did in 2009 — and there’s every reason to believe they’ll be right in the thick of things in 2010.

And if playing the Chargers is a factor, it’s a wash in either city; both the Jets and the Vikings are next scheduled to play San Diego in 2011.  (Of course, either or both teams could play the Chargers in the 2010 postseason.)

Either way, the Vikings have gotten the first crack at signing L.T. — and the key factors remain price tag and buy-in by L.T. regarding his second-fiddle role to Adrian Peterson.

The Jets are a much better fit for LT than Minn.

  4. Bun McSticky says: Mar 11, 2010 11:38 AM

If Minnesota lets LT leave without a contract tonight, that tells me everything I need to know as a fan….it would mean they think he doesn’t have enough tread left on the tires or his attitude isn’t in alignment with what they need from him.

  5. hizzle1281 says: Mar 11, 2010 11:42 AM

No way he signs with the Jets, Greene=starter, Washington=3rd down

  6. Franchise says: Mar 11, 2010 11:42 AM

    LT will sign in Minny.
    Book it.

  7. Hauschild says: Mar 11, 2010 11:42 AM

I still don’t understand what Minny needs with a worn NFL RB that finds it increasingly difficult by the year to WANT to play NFL football.
Call me no fun, or old-fashioned, but it ain’t rocket science, folks. LT’s about as useless as teats on a boar.

  8. FlorioFanClubMember says: Mar 11, 2010 11:43 AM

L.T will be a Viking by the end of the day. Favre will be back and AP and LT will win their first Super Bowl rings in their home state of Texas.

  13. jetters149 says: Mar 11, 2010 11:47 AM

that would be a good pick up for the jets he can out the backfield for sanchez add another weapon for him. lt, greene, washington if healthy that a decent rb squad. the jets should sign marshall and then trade to the hawks for the 14 overall, 2 picks in the first round to goo with all the talent already can you superbowl. Muhaahahah

Why does NY want all of the players who failed to beat them in the playoffs???
If I was in charge of a team, I would try to get players that always put a beatdown on my team….Not NY, they see Cromartie do everything in his power to not tackle my running back, and then think, damn, we need that guy on our team……
Then they see LT accomplish nothing against us in the playoffs, and think, man, just think, we could have that guys lack of performance on our team next year….
It doesnt make sense. Rex Ryan and the Jets front office have done a terrific job of making that team a contender, and now they want these kinds of players….???? Doesnt make sense

  15. DonTerrelli says: Mar 11, 2010 11:52 AM

LT will sign with the Vikes, Favre will be back, they will make it back to the NFC Championship game and will end the same way. LT punches Favre in the face and is released the next day.

    ——————-
LMFAO Peterson will fumble it away and IF Favre comes back he will choke as he always does in the playoffs. LT is a shadow of himself and you could draft a rookie in the 5th round with more impact than you will get from LT and his 3.4 YPC.

Lets see, they lost their 3rd down pass catching/blocking RB, and have arguably the best RB in the game as their #1 who could use a guy to teach him how to hold onto the ball.
LT knows that he isnt a starting guy, and would fit perfectly into that roll.

  21. WarrenMoonGOAT says: Mar 11, 2010 11:58 AM

Why fight it? Just get out at the top of your game like MJ did, while you still have some dignity.

  26. this class sucks says: Mar 11, 2010 12:06 PM

I think LT makes more sense in Minn than NY. LT was still good at pass catching and that’s what they need. My has washigton (right now) I think they would want more of a change of pace guy than a guy who has the same style at Greene.

Vikings Fans are going to be happy that they signed LT down the road, assuming they do. He will impress in workouts, running in a dome will help him also, as well as an offensive line that knows how to block.
    Vikings/Chargers Superbowl 2011
    Book It.

Hauschild: //I still don’t understand what Minny needs with a worn NFL RB that finds it increasingly difficult by the year to WANT to play NFL football.//
Well, they desperately need a 3rd down back. If you go in the draft, which I think is a better idea, then that’s fine. But as talented as Peterson is, he’s not an every down back and the Vikings don’t seem to trust him on 3rd downs. This is where Tomlinson accels.
As far as wanting to play, you’re way off base here. He’s in his 30′s. His play has dropped off. But if you can find people with more heart or a bigger chip on his shoulder to prove he has something left, aside from Favre, feel free to find one.

Well said. But the Vikings are still a really good team. If they’re smart they’ll go the draft route. My guess is they aren’t.

  37. nyjshane88 says: Mar 11, 2010 12:38 PM

As a Jets fan idk what to think about this. I’d rather have Thomas Jones but it is exciting to think of LT being on the team just cuz he’s LT. The Jets owner prob wants to sign him just cuz hes a huge star and they’re moving into a gorgeous new stadium this year and need to sell those evil PSL’s. Same reason they traded for Favre, traded up for Sanchez, and encouraged Rex to make all those ridiculous statements last year, to generate buzz and sell tickets.

  38. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 11, 2010 12:39 PM

  39. J Dub says: Mar 11, 2010 12:41 PM

  41. mixman34 says: Mar 11, 2010 12:47 PM

Yeah and Favre was washed up too old couldn’t do %$*^ anymore. Remember that haters? Howd that go with something to prove? Oh yeah, best statistical season ever! Keep hating haters. It makes it all the more funny when the Vikings dominate your squads…. again. (looking at you cheesballs)

  42. petersonfumblesagain says: Mar 11, 2010 1:12 PM

maxipad, it’s funny, favre had a great statistical regular season, which is expected, the even funnier part is how the season ended, which again was expected. your season ended with favre throwing yet another playoff ending interception, which WE ALL SAW COMING. that’s gotta burn more than 98 doesn’t it?

  43. dlmcc0909 says: Mar 11, 2010 1:28 PM

Its hard enough convincing Favre to hand the ball off to a good player like Peterson, you want him to hand off to a washed up L.T. now too? Thats not going to work. Neither is L.T. on the Jets. they just dont need him. Greene and Leon Washington are a perfect compliment to each other already.
I am sure L.T. realizes he is a backup at this point. But hes not exactly going to want to sign for the veterans minimum either. How funny would it be if he winds up in Atlanta, as Turner’s backup lol

  44. mixman34 says: Mar 11, 2010 1:39 PM

98 hurts worst cause the Falcons didn’t deserve to be in the bowl, they sucked we lost, it hurt. The Saints had every right to play that game and even won the thing . So no I can respect that lost as bad as it hurts.
BTW nice play on my name. See how you changed it from mixman to maxipad… thats clever, howd you come up with that one!? Wow.

  45. mixman34 says: Mar 11, 2010 1:42 PM

And by the way… I’ll GUARANTEE you and 99% of the non-viking fan haters didn’t even come close to EXPECTING Favre to have that statistical season last year. Now that just makes you look dumb… as hell.

  46. jokendave says: Mar 11, 2010 1:54 PM

I remember alot of comments saying Farve was washed up, over the hill couldn’t go a whole season. And what a season. In the right setting, any job is perfect for the right man. But you don’t know till you do it.

    mixman,
So what is more important? Regular season stats or playoff and Superbowl wins? It is funny how with nothing else to hang your sorry teams jersey on, you resort to quoting “best statistical year” garbage on us “Viking/Favre haters.”
Let me put it another way….everything was placed on a silver platter for Favre and the Vikings last year…one of the easiest schedules, 2 outdoor games after October 1st, best running back in the NFL, top ranked defense, Favre’s revenge tour fueling his delusional actions…..and in the end, Favre puked all over your glorious silver platter and all you have now is “best statistical year” crap to quote. Keep it up…..who looks dumb?

  49. purpleguy says: Mar 11, 2010 2:23 PM

I’m not sure NY wouldn’t work just as well as MN for LT, although with Washington, I’m not sure his role would be as clearly defined in NY.

  50. dave says: Mar 11, 2010 2:24 PM

i think the vikes are his best fit when it comes to give and take, he will get alot of goal line opps and minn will benefit from him teach AP how not to fumble
in ny though, the benefit for LT could be increased playing time than minn.
but then in ny , will the new stadium be on real grass? he struggled with tripping over the real stuff the past two seasons

  51. mixman34 says: Mar 11, 2010 4:23 PM

J Dub. You obviously don’t respect what it takes to win in this league. The Superbowl is coveted but we all know there are no paper champions, you still have to go out and win it. Unfortunately the Vikes didn’t but they obviously gave it a fighting chance. Only one team wins the bowl, 31 do not. Being top 4 was fun to watch and was a very successful season. Of course we would have liked to win. But us real fans know it’s tough, and not everyone can win it regardless of how good you are on paper.
To answer your final question: You do… big time.

Mixman….you sound like a beaten down Vikings fan who has had to watch year after year after year of choking in big games. What makes last year even more sweet, was having to endure the 24/7 Favre talk out of Minny, the MVP talk later in the year, the stupid footage of Favre in the locker room after wins…..and then all culminated in the biggest boneheaded throw I have ever seen….from a 19 year NFL vet.
No-one….let me repeat….no-one was talking about the Vikings last year as paper champions. EVERYONE was talking about the remarkable season Favre was having and how the Vikings were blowing through bad football teams on their way to the Superbowl. You, like so many other people, forgot who Favre was as he clouded your mind with his usual great regular season stats and awe shucks attitude.
Why do you even ponder passing?
