PFT Daily: Chiefs rebuilding doesn't guarantee Cassel a job

Last month, Rosenthal pointed out some stuff about the contract given last year to Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel.

Bottom line?  He might only have one more year to turn things around.

And there are some interesting alternatives available, if Cassel can’t improve in 2010.  For more, we give you PFT Daily.

I wonder if Florio wears pants for these “segments”?

    Brady Quinn, Charlie loves him.

    MC > BQ

If Weis had much success with his ND QBs he wouldn’t have been fired.

I think Cassel will be fine. He just needs some talent around him. KC’s getting there.

They’re paying Cassel somewhere around $10 million a season, but yet his job isn’t guaranteed? That’s the exact reason why the Chiefs won’t get anywhere. You don’t rebuild a team by having the most expensive player on your team COMPETING for a job. Cassel isn’t nowhere near the problem, it’s the lack of playmakers on offense (except for Chris Johnson’s clone) and the OL. Had they kept Gonzalez, then they wouldn’t be so far off like they are now.

Who was a better college QB stat wise? Quinn or Clausen?

The Chiefs don’t need a new quarterback. They need to protect the quarterback they already have. I think they should trade with Tampa Bay and go from #5 to #3 and take Russell Okung.

I can see them trading for Quinn but not drafting Clausen. Charlie isn’t the head coach or GM. The GM and coach went out their way last year to grab Cassell. They’re not going to sabotage him by drafting Clausen. Grabbing Brady doesn’t seem like too hostile a move.

    USC > ND…
    Pete Carrol > Charlie Weis…
The simple math makes everything easy.

I don’t get why Cassel was ever coveted. Because he excelled under a good offense for one season? Holy Rob Johnson Batman.

  12. TheGooch says: Mar 11, 2010 3:03 PM

they should trade cassel to denver and draft clausen

  13. clintonrb says: Mar 11, 2010 3:08 PM

cassel is fine,he improved as time went on ..
he had a terrible team around him in the beginning,no running game while lj was starting and people like devard darling and sean ryan as some of your starting receiving options..
the line was constastantly changed, new player being brought in weekly..
when jaamal got the carries and we kept the o-line consistent ( not to mention the aquisition of Chambers ) he improved

Pioli, Cassel and the Chiefs will NEVER match the Patriots success until they get Ernie Adams.

It’s obvious Florio doesn’t watch the Chiefs much.
First, his entire segment rests on the assumption that Weiss determines all the players we get, and that he might not think MC can be the guy.
MC was the quarterback when Weiss took the job. He knew this. He surely met with him beforehand. He also knew that we signed MC to a big contract. Is Weiss really stupid enough to go into a situation where there’s a QB he doesn’t have confidence in determining his effectiveness as a coordinator?
Also, Weiss doesn’t pick the players, Pioli does. Does anyone really think that Scott Pioli defaults to the opinions of the coordinators on all his player acquisitions?
Second, he claims it wouldn’t surprise him if we took Clausen. Well my that’s probably true because nothing surprises him. How can a football “analyst” look at the Chiefs and think they are going to go quarterback? They have way too many other needs that can be filled in the first round. They need G, C, S, LB, DT, TE, T.
Very weak understanding of Chiefs football. He should show a little respect to small market teams by actually doing research. Well, I’m sure he knows about the ones that are on TV all the time.

i can’t see them giving up on Matt Cassel, in my view giving up on him would just be stupid, if on the Broncos, he would be a star. The Chiefs line and offense needs work.

  17. Brewster says: Mar 11, 2010 3:32 PM

Florio, whattsa matter wich u boy, your logic is a little flawed on this.
On 7/14/2009 Scott Pioli the new KC GM signed Cassel to a six-year, $63 million contract. The deal contains $28 million guaranteed, including a $10 million roster bonus in the first year.
Do you really think Pioli is willing to admit less than a year later his first big, actually huge, signing was a mistake? Even if it was? And that he just pissed away $28 mil of Clark Hunt’s money? Not likely.
If, and it’s a big if, they have lost confidence in Cassell there is a way to bring in a backup that is less intrusive to both Cassell’s development and does not highlight Pioli’s big mistake.

  18. Damn it Chiefs!! says: Mar 11, 2010 3:46 PM

If they draft a QB before the 3rd or 4th rd I’ll pull my damn hair out. They have MUCH more pressing needs

  19. chief says: Mar 11, 2010 4:05 PM

This is sooo far happening its kinda crazy you made a video. This will never happen Cassel is the man.

  20. Eazy E in KC says: Mar 11, 2010 4:28 PM

no. you can’t have a team go backwards w/ a new starting qb and especially a rookie who’s never played a down in the NFL. cassel needs help around him. i think the chiefs had the most dropped passes in the NFL, and if they didn’t have the most, they were in the top 3. no qb would look good with those types of players surrounding him.

  21. Icon says: Mar 11, 2010 6:22 PM

utt ca$$el is H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E…the epitome of mediocrity. Brodie Croyle outplayed him last year yet the $63 mill man (who played like 63 cents) kept stinking up the field in KC for my Chiefs. He must be excised – NOW.
Draft Jimmy Claussen (Brady Quinn I never liked, even at Notre Dame, my alma mater.)
If ‘The King of Missteps’ egoli is as stupid as he evidences (and, I think he is), he will lose another 16 games in 2010 with mutt.
FIRE egoli & hailme – STAT!

  22. dudeustupid says: Mar 11, 2010 7:24 PM

they wont trade cassel to a division rival and they WONT draft claussen, weis doesnt make the personell decisions in kc, florio is talkin bout him like hes the HC

  23. sullijo says: Mar 14, 2010 1:38 PM

I’m 37 and never seen the Chiefs play in a super bowl.
I have a 16 year old dog that’s never seen them win a playoff game.
I have a 3 year old kid that’s never seen them win more than 4 games in a season.
    That’s ridiculous.
