Redskins sign Sean Ryan

In an off-season when many expected them to break the bank, the Washington Redskins have once again made a small-time free agent signing that demonstrates they’re going to be fiscally conservative this year.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Washington has signed former Chiefs tight end Sean Ryan to a one-year contract.

As Schefter points out, in the first week of free agency the Redskins have now signed two players, Ryan and offensive lineman Artis Hicks. So much for Dan Snyder going hog wild in an uncapped year.

Ryan is a 29-year-old veteran who bounced around the league as a backup with the Cowboys, Jets, Dolphins, Saints and 49ers from 2004 to 2008. In 2009 he signed with the Chiefs and had his best season, starting eight games and catching 14 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

I think this clearly indicates Cooley is done; he’ll be traded for picks before this thing is over. Fred Davis is now the man, with Yoder and this cat backing him up.

    umm…What about Maake Kemoeatu?

  3. Outsyder says: Mar 11, 2010 8:28 AM

A few years ago, people were saying Snyder learned because he did not go crazy in free agency.
Give him another year where they are 8-8 and he’ll break the bank again.

    Goodbye Yoder…Cooley trade anybody?

  5. EShine says: Mar 11, 2010 8:33 AM

Two players? I thought the Redskins signed Maake Kemoeatu the other day

What this really indicates, is that the Redskins are overly deep on tight ends. Can this guy be made to play the line? Or are the Redskins getting ready to deal one of the others? No team will keep Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Todd Yoder, and then sign Sean Ryan also…………..Plus I think they even have another backup whose name escapes me……..yep, something’s coming. Report that, Florio

  7. DonTerrelli says: Mar 11, 2010 8:39 AM

So, now they have Cooley, Davis, and Ryan. Who’s getting cut or traded?

  8. OranjelloJones says: Mar 11, 2010 8:40 AM

O.K. this one needs some splainin. They have Davis and Cooley and Yoder. Two of those guys are very good pass catchers and one guy is a very good blocker. There are no cap benefits to cutting any of the 3 so why sign a 4th and not a blocker at that but a pass catcher by all accounts?

  9. Tony Alexander says: Mar 11, 2010 8:41 AM

Rex Ryan can still play? Who the….

  10. mooremi9 says: Mar 11, 2010 8:41 AM

Does this mean they are getting rid of Cooley or Davis?

  11. RIP__21 says: Mar 11, 2010 8:46 AM

Only question now is who gets traded…Cooley or Davis?

  12. Will_i_am says: Mar 11, 2010 8:52 AM

    I believe you mean 3 free agents, lets not forget the big man coming off the achilles injury;
Redskins sign NT Kemoeatu for 2 years, $6.975M

  13. rickskins says: Mar 11, 2010 8:52 AM

    Does Maake Kemoeatu not count?

  14. ~AD says: Mar 11, 2010 8:59 AM

They also signed Ma’ake Kemoeatu yesterday…

  15. CaptInsano says: Mar 11, 2010 9:12 AM

Yoder is an unrestricted Free agent and this guy is a primary blocking tight end so it seem he is replacing Yoder….but I still think a Cooley trade is not a bad idea for the right picks.

for all the people talking about the Skins having 3 TEs already, Yoder’s a UFA as far as I can remember…

been nice knowing cooley, anyone want to buy a #47 jersey, stitched on numbers, really nice. call me

Shanahan has had success converting Tight Ends into O-Line players. History also shows that Shanahan prefers faster, smaller O-Line players. Perhaps one or more of the current Tight Ends are destined to be guards or tackles.

No one is getting traded. Yoder is UFA and hasn’t even resigned with the team.

All this means that the Dan Snyder you see on TV is an imposter. The REAL Dan Snyder is being held in the drawer of an alligator skin desk at Fedex Field until free agency ends.

Sean Ryan also played ILB (6’5″ 260lbs) at Boston College. So look for him to make a position change when the Foreskins move to a 3-4 defense…………man…you people will believe anything….stupid Redskins fans.

Yeah….I will trade you straight up for my Fred Smoot jersey.

oh boy….with these two signings the 4skins are going to the SB. Everybody needs to wake up and understand this team has so many holes and will finish last in the NFC East for the next couple of seasons leading weasel midget boy wonder to can the entire coaching staff and start over.
There is no talent, depth or hope that they are competitive. I predict another 4-12 season.
HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!!!!!!!! SB IN BIG D TOO BABY.

  24. smiley says: Mar 11, 2010 9:54 AM

It’s called blocking….no one is getting traded.

Is this guy still DRUNK from last night? We aren’t trading Cooley…. what the hell
    HAIL SKINS!

boysroll , Tell Jerry to go get another facelift. My god is that man fugly.

  27. GoCaps8 says: Mar 11, 2010 11:20 AM

Cooley, Devin Thomas and Carlos Rogers for Brandon Marshall and a 3rd round pick.
Then the Redskins can draft Eric Berry or Joe Haden, beef up the O-line in Rounds 2, 3.

  28. Ryan says: Mar 11, 2010 11:25 AM

Yoder is a free agent, he is not currently on the roster. I would much rather have resigned yoder though, he was a college WR that was undervalued at TE and could also play FB better then sellers.

  29. brianc2540 says: Mar 11, 2010 11:31 AM

Cooley & Davis are receiving TEs, and Yoder is a UFA. Sean Ryan will take Yoder’s spot as the blocking TE…

  30. Hap says: Mar 11, 2010 11:52 AM

I didn’t think anybody blocked on The Skins. Neither did Jason Campbell.

  31. Ryan says: Mar 11, 2010 12:09 PM

Cooley is a great blocker, that is what makes him better then davis. Davis is obviously as good or a better receiving TE.

  32. Veritas Amber says: Mar 11, 2010 12:09 PM

I wonder what the eal with Todd Yoder is… Yes he’s an UFA, and is a blocking Tight end, but he can catch the ball pretty well too. Maybe he’s too slow for shanahan’s system?

  33. DontBEHating says: Mar 11, 2010 12:18 PM

Maake Kemoeatu signed too. Maybe the approach is more calculated and not about the splash? Seems to me like they are thinking things out.
This does not mean the end of Cooley. Skins have two of the top young TE’s in the game. Maybe Shanny jr. is excited about putting them together and making you stop them.
    Should be interesting.
Oh an about the SB being in Dallas, who cares? Cowboys will just get punished in opening round of the playoffs as usual. Only difference is Wade and Romo will be watching SB from there home stadium next season.

    boysroll… (aka: idiot)
I signed up to this site just to remind you, as many already have, of what a troll you are. Obviously you have some deep rooted insecurities about yourself as you seem to never have anything relevant to say…except random babbling over the underachieving Cowturds. Get a life, or better yet, schedule some psychotherapy.

  35. artkang says: Mar 11, 2010 1:00 PM

c’mon folks. do some research. yoder is an UFA. he’s not coming back, and the redskins typically keep 3 TEs on the roster. cooley and davis probably aren’t going anywhere.
