Garrard wants Peyton to teach him how to prepare

Jaguars quarterback David Garrard says he knows he needs to do a better job this year of preparing in the spring to be the best quarterback he can be in the fall. And he says he’s going to ask for some tips from a division rival: Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

“I do believe Peyton Manning is doing more than I’m doing or things I haven’t thought of doing before,” Garrard said Thursday. “It’s allowing him to be the player he is. I really believe when you are labeled the hardest-working guy in the film room, there’s some truth to that. That’s an area I can do better at myself. I’ve got the physical gifts. That’s not the issue. The issue is knowing what the defense is going to do.”

Garrard says he got Manning’s phone number and plans to give him a call soon.

The obvious question: What would be in it for Manning to help another quarterback in his division get better? While he’s at it, maybe Garrard should ask Manning to send a copy of the Colts’ playbook to the Jaguars’ coaching staff.

Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver apparently told Garrard he should emulate Manning. Interesting considering Weaver’s reaction to Manning’s Super Bowl interception.

Whether Manning is actually going to help Garrard or not, Garrard knows he needs to improve. In fact, Garrard said he thinks that if he doesn’t improve, he could end up losing his job to backup Luke McCown.

“I’m not stupid. I’m not naive. I definitely need to go in and play my best,” Garrard said. “Competition is always healthy and always a good thing. If I can’t do enough to outplay the guy that is backing me up, then absolutely it should be his job.”

Preparation only takes you so far. Talent has to play a big role.

The major thing that is seperating Peyton and Garrard is that Peyton dosent suck!

This is a very bold move
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Peyton will help him
The Jags need more than a qb….so there should be now harm
Big Ben should be asking Peyton how to act in public

While I can imagine that Peyton Manning would be willing to offer a fellow member of the fraternity his help, I think it’s ridiculous of Garrard to put himself in the public eye in discussing this with a reporter.
Makes him look like an idiot, both for not knowing how to get better on his own (gee, isn’t that what a coaching staff is for?) and asking a division rival, of all people, to help him improve.

Your comments show the shallow side of humanity.

What could “be in it” for Manning is a career after football for one thing.

Seeing how the Colts cut the six year backup to Peyton, Jim Sorgi, why didn’t Garrard ask the Jags to try to sign him? Sorgi would have known what Peyton does. The only other team interested was the Giants and I’m sure if the Jags put an extra $250K on the table, NY would have backed off. I think the chances of him getting help from Peyton are about as good as the chances of Gisele Bundchen leaving Tom Brady for Florio. In other words, zero.

    Ding ding, winner.
This is like last offseason, when Garrard realized it probably wasn’t a good idea to play fat.

Maybe if college teams would stop bringing up African American quarterbacks as athletes instead of pure passers, they’ll eventually be a good one. Until then, you’re just going to have a plethora of Vicks, V. Youngs, and Dennis Dixons.

I’m sure Peyton Manning isn’t too worried about that.

Isn’t this what coaches are supposed to do?
I mean, surely sometime in his history with football, someone had to show/tell him how to prepare and study film.
Maybe the Manning family just took more time and interest in their kids.

  16. overkil2 says: Mar 12, 2010 8:45 AM

Let’s get real, Manning would only do it if Garrard payed him. He’s all about the Benjamins.

I absolutely agree with you RICH for 1 this is not like asking for help on dealing with an injury, and 2 he is not a rookie or second year player if your asking Manning for help keep it to your self.

I’ll bet anything Manning would help him, no questions asked.
The problem to me is, I really don’t think Garrard has enough upstairs to understand what Manning would be telling him.

  21. NFLGhetto says: Mar 12, 2010 9:01 AM

Garrard is going to teach Peyton how to scramble and in return Peyton will teach Garrard how to throw a football.
What Manning does in preparation to be successful is – He’s really good !
Garrard could prepare his ass off and he’ll never come close to being a very good all around QB.

  22. JAG880 says: Mar 12, 2010 9:05 AM

Not a NFL players are dicks like the commenters here. Players of different teams help each other all of time.
Many of them train together in the offseason.

  23. BleedGreen says: Mar 12, 2010 9:06 AM

So 1 bad throw by Manning makes him not one of the greatest QBs ever to play the game? He DID win the MVP award this year did he not?

  24. Tetrahydrocannibinol says: Mar 12, 2010 9:38 AM

Manning can teach him how to put up crazy good stats in the regular season. He can also teach him how to choke and throw costly interceptions in post season games. He and Brett Favre are a lot alike.

You all forget who the QB Coach for Jacksonville used to be. Ken Anderson was an excellent QB for Cincinnati for a very long time. However, as a coach, he ruined David Klingler (tried to make him a 5-step drop QB) and Akili Smith (OK, maybe he didn’t have much with which to work). He then moved on to Jacksonville and survived the coaching change somehow. Daunte seemed to go a little downhill the last couple of years there. Anderson is now in Pittsburgh. It’s a great time to be a fan of every other AFC North team but Pittsburgh.

  26. Jag4Life says: Mar 12, 2010 9:42 AM

Come on David. I understand what you’re saying and what you’re thinking, but don’t go to the enemy, especially the one man roster Peyton. Granted, yes we all know Peyton’s good at his craft, but that’s why Waever brought Del Rio back right. Put the coaching staff around Garrard and coach’em up. Besides, screw the Colts. They’ll be back as bottom dwellers in 3-4 years once Petyon get’s long in the tooth then we’ll see all the so called Colts die hards fans wither away just like in the 1990′s.

Ketchman said he was going to keep an eye on McCown in camp and the preseason. You never know when a guy will make a move.
That’s how Garrard got Leftwich cut.

  28. LovinBlue says: Mar 12, 2010 10:24 AM

I believe Peyton would help him, because he understands that elevating other players’ games elevates the entire league. Imagine if the Jags could become competitive… more butts in seats in Jacksonville… increased revenue… eventual trickle-down to the players.
Peyton’s smart enough, though, not to give away specifics. He’ll probably just discuss routines more so than film interpretation.

  29. robigd says: Mar 12, 2010 10:26 AM

Wayne Weaver NEVER celebrated when he threw that pick. This has been verified by more reliable sources than the hacks on PFT.

Joe in Toronto, I’ve never read or observed anything related to Garrard’s intelligence level. I’d be interested in knowing how you came to this conclusion?

  31. Didier says: Mar 12, 2010 10:39 AM

A QB in your division is going to coach you into being a better player? Right.
The very suggestion amply demonstrates why Garrard won’t be the Jags’ starting QB on opening day.
First, Del Rio disses Garrard as soon as the season is over.
Then, Wayne Weaver essentially issues an ultimatum that the Jags make the playoffs next season.
Now, Vic Ketchman is praising, of all people, Luke McCown, who couldn’t even beat out Byron Leftwich, who was unceremoniously dumped by Del Rio almost as the team was suiting up for opening day.
David, with your $60 million contract, even you should be able to add these two things together.

  32. Thingamajig says: Mar 12, 2010 10:43 AM

If Peyton won’t help him maybe another AFC great QB, JaMarius will.

  34. tombrookshire says: Mar 12, 2010 11:09 AM

Uh, what have his coaches and trainers been doing all this time to help prepare him for the season and for games? Is the owner suggesting that he reach out to Manning? That’s a pretty telling indictment of his coaching and training staffs, the lot of which will probably be gone this time next year anyway.

  35. FireJerryJones says: Mar 12, 2010 11:20 AM

Maybe he should ask Jim Sorgi how Manning prepares.

“Garrard says he got Manning’s phone number and plans to give him a call soon.”
If I was Manning, I would answer the phone and say, “Ryan Leaf, how can I help you?”

  37. Seeryer says: Mar 12, 2010 12:47 PM

Folks, he is just talking about the above and beyond things that Peyton does in the offseason. It is simple. “Well, David, I invite the WR’s and TE’s down to New Orleans each offseason for a 5 day session. We eat together, we watch film together and we go through the route tree hundreds of times. During training camp I call my own meetings after each 7on7 and we watch everything together. Not Qbs in one room and WRs in the other but together. And I get a good 45 minute on field workout with my top 3 WRs before I put on a single pad on SUN.” And then Garrard can incorporate those types of things. Getting a sold interior OL, improvement from the tackle position and a little explosiveness in the WR corps would go along way in having a 103 QB rating and a 6 to 1 TD to INT ratio, like he had in 2007. I’m not sure he relied on Peyton for advice that year.
