Nick Collins signs three-year, $23.4 million deal with Packers

Nick Collins has agreed to a long-term deal to stay with the Green Bay Packers.

Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel is reporting that Collins signed a three-year extension worth $23.4 million, including $14 million in the first year.

The extension comes the same week that Collins, who has started every game but three during his five-year career with the Packers, signed his restricted free agent tender.

Collins has 13 interceptions over the last two seasons, second on the team behind the 16 picks by Charles Woodson since 2008.

    7.8mil a year, isn’t that Polamalu/Reed region ?

  4. packerswin says: Mar 12, 2010 7:25 PM

Wow, I mean holy crap that is a lot of money for a safety not named Reed or Polamalu. Nobody can really say that TT won’t spend money to win, he just prefers to give it to his own players in most cases. Holy shit thats a lot of money.

There aren’t too many safeties still in their twenties in the NFL who I’d take over Nick Collins. It’s good that most of the money is paid this year in the uncapped season. Packers also locked up Pickett and reportedly close to resigning Mark Tauscher today.

  6. FLYBOY says: Mar 12, 2010 7:28 PM

Collins is a stud, but most importantly, word around the league is that he feels Big Ben’s idea of changing his name to Ruthlessonfurberger is a bad idea.

  7. Packrule12 says: Mar 12, 2010 7:31 PM

Look no further then the queens roster for all examples of overrated. Collins is underrated and a great safety that isn’t injured every week like Palalalalalammmmmau or Sanders. Collins makes Rolle look like a chump!

Honestly looking at the free agents that were out there this offseason – besides a few guys like Peppers, what great players were out there to sign? Nick Collins would have gotten a deal this big or bigger if he would have been an unrestricted free agent this offseason. He is a better player & playmaker than Rolle.

Obviously you don’t know much about football. 2 consecutive pro bowls, 2nd in the league in interceptions over the last 2 years… not the Packers, the NFL.
He’s fast, hits, and is in his 20′s… hat trick for the win.

If Rolle is worth $7.4 million a year, Collins is worth twice that, so the Packers got him at a bargain.

I’m shocked that TT loosened the purse strings.
Too bad all it will net him is 3rd place in the division!

  16. P-Slice says: Mar 12, 2010 7:56 PM

A players rating and money are not equal. You cannot overpay this year for the waterboy. It’s uncapped year so who cares what any team does.

  17. internettoughguy says: Mar 12, 2010 8:03 PM

I hate the Packers but this guy could be the most under-rated safety out there.

  21. MrHumble says: Mar 12, 2010 8:12 PM

Collins is good one game and stinks the next, no consistency whatsoever. Guess if TT isn’t gonna spend $ on improving the Packers with free agents , he’s gotta spend it somewhere to make it look good. The only numbers of Collins that compare with polomalu and reed is his salary. There’s a rather simple process in the nfl, if you’re gonna just keep the same players you can expect to receive the same results.

  22. 1stngoal says: Mar 12, 2010 8:20 PM

First Pickett, now Collins. Great moves Teddy!!! Way to get those queen fans all hot under the collar as their ship gets prepared to set sail for LA soon…;-)

  23. DB26 says: Mar 12, 2010 8:28 PM

I am glad to see that his character pays off, not gets taken advantage of. He did the right thing by showing a commitment to the Packers in signing his tender, and the Packers showed the teams commitment in return with a lucrative deal!
I wish the remainder of the players in this league, their agents, and the GM’s/Owners all did more representation of this fashion. If so, this would still be a respectable league worth putting the money we put into it.

  24. Bob Nelson says: Mar 12, 2010 8:28 PM

In the uncapped year higher revenue teams like the Pacekrs can spend as much as they want.
Especially on their own players with multiple Pro Bowl starts.

Love the hate normally, as Green Bay has its share of idiot fans, but the guy had, what, 13 picks in the last two seasons, a couple 3 -4 for TD’s?
The guys talks like he’s dumb as a stump, but he can play………….

  33. Free Ryan Leaf says: Mar 12, 2010 11:10 PM

Its a 3 year extension to his tender contract of 1 year at $3.3 million. So he is now signed for 4 years at $27.7 million. That is under $7 million per year, less than Rolle’s deal. But Collins got more money upfront, including a whopping $14 million in the first year.

  34. PackFanNChiTown says: Mar 12, 2010 11:18 PM

Regardless whether or not Nick is worth what he got, everyone knows some other team wouldn’t paid him equal or more…
    Congrats Nick!

  35. CaptainFantastik says: Mar 12, 2010 11:25 PM

This is rich, Vikings fans spent their time going into the off-season claiming the Packers would move backward because they “wouldn’t be able to re-sign guys like this”…..and now that they HAVE re-signed them these same Vikes fans are trying to diminsh the player by calling him “over-rated”. LOL.
Oh, and PackerHater28 reminds me of Brick Tamlan from Anchorman with his feeble barbs. “Hey where did you get those clothes…the toilet store?”.

  36. Johnnyb612 says: Mar 12, 2010 11:35 PM

    Bob Nelson,
I don’t agree that higher revenue teams like the Packers can do whatever they want in an uncapped year. Don’t forget that all of these teams are owned by rich billionaires where money is no object. Since the Packers have no owner, they don’t really have as much money as all these other teams. The sad part is the fact that since the Packers do turn a profit every year, they have to give up a percentage of it to share with rich billionaires whose teams have a shitty fan base and can’t even sell out a playoff game(Viqueens). I think this is possibly the worst situation that a team with an ownership structure like the Packers can operate in.

  37. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 12, 2010 11:46 PM

Glad the Pack has locked in Pickett and Collins – great players, solid, hard-charging and dependable.

  38. Majik Bullet says: Mar 13, 2010 12:28 AM

You’re right. Collins is the man. Without him, they probably would give up 68 points to Minny in 2 games, or 500 passing yards to Big Ben, or 51 points to the Cardinals. That secondary was amazing, thank god they resigned Collins to shore it up again…..
Thompson is a fool for letting all of them reach free agency, got lucky with the CBA, and now is overpaying all of the free agents, i.e. Collins, Clifton, and Picket. Speaking of Picket, nice work on using 2 1st round picks in 3 years and now another huge contract all on 1 position.

  39. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 13, 2010 1:03 AM

GB Press Gazette reporting the Collins contract is for FOUR years, not three.

  41. Charisma says: Mar 13, 2010 1:17 AM

    Majik–
All those stats and you missed that Green Bay was still top 5 in pass defense.. Without 2 starters for half the year each. Terrible argument. So yeah, thank god they signed Collins.
Thompson PLANNED on no new CBA. Just like everyone else in the NFL did. For the last 2+ years. He thought ahead. Something you clearly weren’t able to do and still aren’t able to do.
    Your arguments are awful.

Great signing. Unlike Reed, Collins is not 75 years old. And unlike Palumalumalu, Collins actually stays on the field for most of the year.

  45. SwedishMurderMachine says: Mar 13, 2010 6:37 AM

Give credit where it is due Viking bros. This is a good signing for the Cheesedicks. Let Packer fans continue their domination of the retarded troll posting category.

Now if he’ll spend some of his money and learn how to tackle.

  47. GirthyOne says: Mar 13, 2010 8:15 AM

Pro Bowl doesn’t mean a whole lot, it’s a popularity contest voted on by fans and since some of you must have voted, it explains why he made it. ALL PRO is the award that actually means something.
Nick Collins is a poor man’s Darren Sharper and he’s completely over-rated. Get an INT one play, only to give up a TD the next.
Good offenses lit up the Packer’s defense. Where was Collins in the playoff game? Terrible was the word that came to mind.
Was there much out there in free agency, not really. Rolle is a better player. Paying Collins this kind of money though, ouch.
Thompson won’t pay for free agents to come to Green Bay, but he over-pays for his own. Nick Barnett ring a bell?
Watch this year as they play a more difficult schedule. A bunch of you turds will start blaming the poor play on something I am sure.
Looks like 9-7. Lucky the Packers have Detroit to roll over twice.

I love how Viking fans were saying how Thompson wouldn’t be able to keep all of our free agents, and how stupid he is for letting Collins become a free agent(before the uncapped year took place).
    ——————————-
You forget these are the same guys that called Packer fans whiners for pointing out the bad calls in the ‘Zona game, then the very next week followed up their loss with whining that is still going on today. This thread and the one about the Ryan Pickett signing tell you everything to know about the Viking fans that post here. From the narcissistic homers (Pervy), to the purveyors of pseudo analytical football pretzel logic (Majik), to the guys TT must have given an atomic wedgie in the high school gym (FoF). I don’t think you have to worry about anyone taking these guys seriously.

  49. pakrguru says: Mar 13, 2010 9:39 AM

Couldn’t be more incorrect Johnnyb612. Although the Packers do have to share revenue regarding TV rights and ticket sales, like all other teams do, they make a substantial amount of their revenue off the refurbishment of Lambeau Field.
Like it or not, Lambeau is a tourism draw with its restaurants, tours and bars. Different social events are held there almost every single weekend of the year, hosting business meetings, weddings, etc. That revenue stays rights with the Pack, giving them dollars to spend like they did on Collins and Pickett. I don’t see anyone lining up to go to the Hubert H Heftbag on non-football game weekends, adding $$ to the Vikings coffers.
In order for a smaller market team to compete, they have to draft well (see Collins, the Claymaker, Finley, etc), and then wrap them up to longer term deals as they improve. Great signing for a quality player who contributes on a weekly basis.

  50. Majik Bullet says: Mar 13, 2010 11:40 AM

That’s great they had a highly ranked defense. They played very well against Cleveland and Detroit. What I was pointing out is that when facing an offense that actually has a pulse, they folded.
And yes jimmy, they had the #1 rushing defense. But how did they perform when it mattered, in the playoffs? They gave up 150+ yards to the league’s 28th ranked rushing attack. Where were those three stalwarts when the season was on the line?
Maybe you should think ahead to next season, now that GB’s defense has been exposed.

  51. 1mge says: Mar 13, 2010 2:06 PM

Did the Vikings win the Superbowl last year?? With all their jackass fans posting’s you would sure think so!

  52. shaggytoodle says: Mar 13, 2010 3:12 PM

For all the people who say Collins is too expensive, can you name ONE FA that the Packers could sign in front of him that would do better the next two-three seasons. They may try drafting a safety but theres is no gurantee he will be a starter and they would probably get a SS, because Bigby gets hurt alot. Collins does get burned at times, but so do all safetys.
