Quinn's future in Cleveland could be tied to Delhomme

4149.jpgDespite rumors that quarterback Brady Quinn is available in trade, team president Mike Holmgren essentially says that Quinn’s status hinges on whether they can find someone better.

It all depends on what else we can do,” Holmgren told Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

By all appearances, “what else” primarily means “sign Jake Delhomme.”

“Delhomme is still an ongoing discussion,” Holmgren said.  “He still is on radar.  But I did tell this to Jake:  while you’re debating what you want to do, I’ve got to keep going.  We’re not just sitting on our hands waiting for something to happen.  I don’t want to be left standing at the altar.”

Though Holmgren said that Delhomme would not be promised the starting job, it’s obvious that he’s got a better chance of winning it with the Browns than with the Saints.

“I think if we’re competing with New Orleans, I think
it’s safe to say he will not be the starter in New Orleans,” Holmgren said.  “I think he
certainly has the potential to be the starter here.”

So it sounds as if Quinn will be moved if Delhomme chooses to take his turnover show to Cleveland.

Maybe Seneca Wallace really is the best option.

makes no sense, quinn MIGHT be a bum but delhomme definitely is

hmm, lets see… a young former 1st round pick thats barely had a chance to prove himself, or a washed up interception machine that has proven himself as finished… keep in mind, this is the browns, so nothing should be a surprise, while any other franchise that’s building for the future would put delhomme out to pasture.

this doesn’t make sense, trade a guy who actually could be good and replace him with a man who throws a ton of interceptions.

    Quinn won’t be moved.
He’ll be cut, but not “moved”

I just cannot believe that, out of the millions of football players out there, the Browns can’t uncover a QB. They won’t give Quinn a legitimate chance but they can focus on career backups and has-beens. As mader1896 says, it makes no sense.

  10. gm12086 says: Mar 12, 2010 9:30 PM

Dear God, no!!!!!!!! Jake Delhomme is just awful. I would be a sweet QB if I had DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield and Steve Smith as my go to guy. Delhomme was an abomination with that same group. Steve Smith told him to his face he didn’t like him as a Quarterback. Can someone please send that video to Mike Holmgren in an e-mail attachment?

  11. MasterShake says: Mar 12, 2010 9:36 PM

Could this be the start of Vick to Cleveland? I don’t know if that’s funny or sad. No matter how much people want to say that it can’t happen, at the end of the day (someday) it can.
Hopefully Cleveland will call Jeff George before they go down that slope. Bernie is looking for work right?

  12. Jack Acid says: Mar 12, 2010 9:40 PM

It’s a sad state of affairs when Delhomme is your targeted QB.
He’d be a decent backup, but I pity anyone he starts for.

  13. roland2305 says: Mar 12, 2010 9:43 PM

I don’t get this. I’m no Quinn fan but how is Delhomme a better option? Signing Delhomme would also make Quinn’s trade value even lower than it is because everybody knows that Wallace wasn’t brought here to be a #3 meaning that they would HAVE to trade Quinn now. Delhomme was awful with an all pro WR & 2 1,000 yard rushers playing w/ him in Carolina, how bad is he gonna be with talent challenged Browns offense?

  14. BigMikey says: Mar 12, 2010 9:43 PM

If the Saints offer you a job, Jake, you should take it.
Life will be better for you in Lousiana than it ever will be in Cleveland. As evidenced by Comment #1, they don’t deserve a class act.
Let Holmgren trot Quinn out there this fall. Hahahaha…….

  15. BigEasy says: Mar 12, 2010 9:45 PM

Delhomme is 35………Quinn is what 22-23 c’mon man! Sennaca Wallace…lol…..great decision Scott Fujita….Leave a Super Bowl team to cash out with a team that has been sucking and will suck long after you have gone!

  16. colenutt3 says: Mar 12, 2010 9:49 PM

Delhomme is garbage. Hands down. Confidence is shot and Clevland can’t afford to waste time or money with this guy.

  17. trickbunny says: Mar 12, 2010 9:51 PM

Though once upon a time he was decent, Delhomme has obviously been horrible the past couple years. Absolutley horrible.
But here’s the thing. If the Browns WRs play better this year, the running game is better (which it will be, because Jamal Lewis won’t be there to get one yard per carry like he was the first 10 games of last year), and the O-line plays at least as good as it did last year (when the Browns protected the QB better than 21 other teams in the league)— I’d rather have Delhomme back there.
Brady’s problem is BRADY. He flat out blows. It doesn’t matter if the players around him improve- he’ll still suck. Look at the win against the Steelers last year for proof. Everyone in that game really stepped up… except Brady.
At least Delhomme has BEEN good in the past and maybe, with a change of scenario and an improving surrounding cast.
So yeah, Delhomme sucks. Just not as bad as Quinn.
See ya, Brady. The gay porn industry is probably hiring.

  18. Jordon Cooper says: Mar 12, 2010 9:52 PM

Depending on what Cleveland wants for Quinn, a trade to Denver makes some sense. Kyle Orton isn’t the long term answer, Quinn is familiar with the Denver offensive scheme (well, it appears to running the “bubble screen” over and over again so maybe Quinn is over qualified).

  23. toonster says: Mar 12, 2010 10:43 PM

Delhomme isn’t any good, but it seems clear that many in the league have decided that Brady is pretty much toast. While I think Lombardi probably took it a bit far in his commentary (suggesting that the Browns may cut Quinn), Quinn really hasn’t done anything yet, and with basically a new regime in, along with the fact that Mangini wasn’t that high on him, I can understand the desire to turn the page.
If they go Delhomme/Wallace/youngster, then it’d be to hold the fort until they can get a young QB ready. That would probably mean they’d try to go after a QB, probably in the 2nd, someone like LeFevour or McCoy perhaps. I doubt Holmgren has any illusions on Delhomme. I think he understands that it’s a stopgap situation, and what we’ve seen this offseason from the Browns has been an effort to build up everything else and hope they can find a QB to develop. They still need secondary help, another WR (but that could come from Robiskie or Cribbs, although another piece wouldn’t hurt), a platoon/backup RB to Jerome Harrison, but the OL is solid, the DL is solid, and the LB crew of Roth/Fujita/Jackson/Wimbley looks solid.
    Some thoughts:
Quinn – I agree that Denver should pursue him. He knows enough of the system. Denver also needs more WR talent, but if they are pondering adding a young QB this year, adding Quinn for what would likely be a low cost (I can’t see Quinn getting more than 3rd round value) would seem like a smart move, considering the difference between Quinn and, say, Clausen, is, IMO, minimal. I’m not a fan of Quinn, but this isn’t a strong QB class, so if you can land him for anything less than a 2nd, it’s a worthy gamble, IMO.
Cleveland – Honestly, I think if the Eagles made Kevin Kolb available, a lot of teams would come calling (Seattle, Cleveland at the top, but others as well). The league is somewhat dry on young backup QB’s that have high value and seem ready to emerge. There’s Kolb … there was Moore (but he’s not going anywhere) … and ? There really isn’t much, and the Eagles could net a huge return for Kolb, IMO, if he’s available. Put him up against the top two QB’s this year, and considering the cost, Kolb, IMO, would be a better gamble than spending a top 10 pick on either one of those two guys (though I am a fan of Bradford, the overall cost of the salary makes it so that, as a top 5 pick, Bradford would need to be good, otherwise the team is somewhat hampered, to say the least).
I keep wondering whether if something like swapping firsts and 2nd’s, along with getting a 3rd, would be enough for the Eagles to make a deal (that would place Kolb’s value at around a mid-first, which I think is plausible, although maybe less would get it done, as Matt Schaub was traded more for late first value IIRC). The Eagles would move up and perhaps be in position to shore up their defense, the Browns would get their QB and have the picks to shore up the rest of their squad (late first value on WR’s should be solid).

  24. Dixon29 says: Mar 12, 2010 10:55 PM

I am not a “Quinnbot” as some Browns fans are, but he is a WAY better option than Delhomme.
14 starts. That is all Brady Quinn has had. Just put him out there next year. At worst, Jake Locker is our new QB in 2011. With Delhomme, Jake Locker is our guy for sure in 2011.
Don’t bring Delhomme to Cleveland. I would rather have Jeff Garcia, who was here, and sucked, before I would ever want Delhomme.
I WOULD TAKE JAMARCUS RUSSELL OVER DELHOMME. BEING SERIOUS, COMPLETELY SERIOUS.

  25. OLDCRACKER says: Mar 12, 2010 11:01 PM

Where’s Charlie Weiss? Maybe we can ship BQ there and maybe he can turn around his career. Maybe just a change of scenery. The Browns and the carousel at HC & OC hasn’t done BQ any favors.
Big Mike knows a lot more about QB’s than any of us here. However the pickings (QB) in FA & this year’s draft may not leave him many options.
Why not bring in someone like Zorn or Mariucci to work with BQ and see if there is anything there? Give him a legitimate shot, the worse we could do is wind up with the #1 pick next year.

  26. fleet10 says: Mar 12, 2010 11:26 PM

Browns fan here, and agree mostly with the vibe of the comments……………..Quinn has 12 starts in 3 years……..which is not enough to qualify as a “shot”…..particulary with the revolving door at GM, Coach, Offensive Coordinator, bye bye Braylon, I’m a soldier Winslow, poor right-side of the offensive line, and Jamal “hey, I run a 12 second 40-yard dash” Lewis. Massaquoi and Robiskie just got here last year, you’ve converted undrafted return man Cribbs (see NEVER PLAYED THE POSITION), and then wonder why he has no chemisty with his receivers. Particularly when you wait till the opening kick off to announce him as the starter. Yeah, I support Mangini, but dude, did you really “psyche” the Vikings out?
Give him a shot. I’m not sold on drafting a QB high, because we’ve constantly shown we’re unable to properly groom one. Case in point, the high draft pick of which we speak. Also, if your the Big Show, and you’re turning this around, why even speak Delhommes name, unless it’s for some smoke screen to get the guy your looking at. I don’t know, that’s all I can figure. You just dumped Anderson because of his turnovers. Well, I didn’t care for Anderson, and supported the cut, but why drop a 6’6″ 25 year old QB with a rocket arm because of turnovers, then turn around and look at a shorter, older, weaker-armed QB who is worse……………..I just don’t get it……………………………..

  27. JJMADDOG says: Mar 12, 2010 11:45 PM

Quinn hasn’t played becasue even the coaches knew he was worse the Anderson. If Quinn is in Cleveland next year he will be lead clipboard carrier if not running the scout team. He slid down in the draft for a reason, and now we know why. No accuracy for the check down king.
As I remeber Charlie Weis had a pretty high opinion of him when he was talking Romeo into taking him. Where is Jabba the coach now. He can have his “most NFL ready QB” back.

  28. jamaltimore says: Mar 13, 2010 12:14 AM

RE Holmgren/Delhomme – “… I did tell this to Jake: while you’re debating what you want to do, I’ve got to keep going. We’re not just sitting on our hands waiting for something to happen. I don’t want to be left standing at the altar.”
Got a kick out of reading these words coming, ironically, from MHolmgren. Maybe he should fax a copy of his remarks over to BChildress, current coach of one of Holmgren’s old students. Back in Brett’s GB days with Mike, the two were frequently locked in mortal combat, the talented, intractable kid and the apoplectic Santa Claus.
How different the two coaches are, in much the same situation: Holmgren says I need to know but I won’t wait forever. Childress says take your time, no matter the cost.

  30. DB26 says: Mar 13, 2010 1:32 AM

    2010 – Seneca Wallace = Starter
    Jake Delhomme = Back up
    2011 – Tony Pike/Colt McCoy/Jarrett Brown (whomever they draft) = Starter
    Seneca Wallace = Back Up
    Delhomme = 3rd Stringer
Browns will draft Pike, McCoy, or Jarrett Brown to be the future of the franchise, learning from Mike Holmgren and Gil Haskins.

  31. gm12086 says: Mar 13, 2010 2:47 AM

Delhomme = shit show. Would have rather tried to restructure Andersons’ deal and keep him than sign this colostomy bag……..

  32. toonster says: Mar 13, 2010 2:54 AM

Btw, Weis is in Kansas City. I wouldn’t rule out a Weis/Quinn reunion, although I find it unlikely. That said, from what I recall of the Cassel contract, Cassel has to step up this year, or he could be at risk.

  33. alkibar22 says: Mar 13, 2010 3:25 AM

so cleveland fans are morons and dont deserve a winner. Delhomme maybe old, but one and half bad seasons? quinn is aweful, give him 500 games still a pile. quinn cant hold delhomme’s,anderson’s or maybe even couch’s jock. HE F**KING sucks. I’d pray to finally have some validity at quaterback, instead a bunch of retards want to see quinn ruin another year of cleveland football, time for him to go be a back-up. It’s not a coinicidence he fell in the draft, 20 other gm’s knew he sucked. D.A. had a qb battle thanks to dumb fans after going to a pro bowl and winning 10 games. GO D.A., win a championship and f**k cleveland fans

  34. dawgfan says: Mar 13, 2010 6:29 AM

Don’t think that the Cleveland fans gad anything to do with Modell moving the team… Modell is a greedy, scum sucking, low life piece of dog do do…
On to the subject… You can see if a QB has it from the start… Brady just doesn’t have it… Jake IS NOT THE ANSWER… Don’t make thing worse bringing him in… Vick or Kolb with Wallace as a Wildcat/backup… preferably Vick, he is hungry and wants to prove to everybody he deserves mega bucks….

  35. GoBrowns19 says: Mar 13, 2010 8:10 AM

Not at all, Art Modell left because he’s a horrible businessman that somehow was able to lose money despite a full stadium every Sunday. Taking out a loan to sign Andre Rison, for example. So Al Lerner and the city of Baltimore pounced on the opportunity and offered him the world to move his team, which he did.

  36. Dr Hiram J Puddlestone says: Mar 13, 2010 8:37 AM

Well shucks Cleveland! If you’re gonna be that generous we’ll trade you Troy Smith for a 3rd round draft pick and a couple of those funny rubber dog heads….dayum!

  37. Howboutdemcowboys says: Mar 13, 2010 9:36 AM

Sorry Cleveland fans you are going to suck as long as Holmgren is VP of football operations. As his next move he will hire Matt Millen as the GM.
    Holmgren’s Wonderlic Test
    Number 1)
    Which is better?
    a. A QB who starts 11 games throws 8 td’s and 18 int’s with one of the top 5 WR’s in the game.
    b. A QB who starts 9 games throws 8 td’s and 7 int’s with 2 rookies starting at WR.

  38. BroncoBourque says: Mar 13, 2010 9:45 AM

If they aren’t going to give Quinn a real shot then just trade him for whatever you can get and move on. Like fleet10 pointed out, the Browns have been a terrible place for a developing QB and constantly having to look over his shoulder hasn’t helped Quinn either.
If I am the Rams, I pick up the phone and offer the first pick of the 4th round for Quinn and bring him in as my starter for the next year at least. With the way the Browns have handled Quinn they can’t expect more than that for him and if they are considering signing Delhomme it is clear they don’t value Quinn any higher than that themselves.

  39. Grunt says: Mar 13, 2010 10:17 AM

Quinn is not a NFL QB he’s a career backup. He just wont make it as a starting qb. He’s lost his accuracy never had the arm to begin with and definatly won’t cut the air in the Nov/Dec in Cleveland. He’s a locker room cancer, he’s ridiculously big for a qb(EAS?). Bring in Delhome to be Seneca’s backup, it’s a good idea. Seneca will be the starter! It’s the same move Holmgren did in Sea when bringing the 5 yr backup Hasslebeck that not many people knew about to be his QB. Seneca knows the systems and has played well in it.

  40. scrapdawg12 says: Mar 13, 2010 10:52 AM

Delhomme or Quinn? Are the Browns serious? Quinn is young, Delhomme is over the hill. Surround Quinn with some playmakers and see if he can get the job done. Massaquoi and Cribbs are not what I call talent. Signing Owens for a year, drafting a WR might be something I call talent but they have so many holes it will take years to fill.

  41. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 13, 2010 10:53 AM

When Holmgren brought Hasslebeck to Seattle he also brought in Trent Dilfer to push him a little bit and serve as a veteran back up and mentor in case Hasslebeck wasn’t up to the starting job. Dilfer actually went into that season as the starter but eventually lost the job to Hasslebeck. Anyone else see the similarities here?
Sorry Quinn fans, you can argue that he’s only had 12 starts, but Wallace has had just as many over the same time frame and he’s looked brilliant by comparison. Wallace’s worst day as a starter far exceeds Quinn’s best. He more than passes the “eye” test.
Holmgren’s back-ups QB are future starters. Go down the list Steve Young, Steve Bono, Brett Favre, Mark Brunell, Hasslebeck. There is no reason in the last 3 years to think that streak is going to be broken.
