Rumors swirling that Tomlinson will sign with Jets

Free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson hasn’t found a new team just yet. But as he visits with the Jets, the rumors are swirling that he’s close.

We’ve caught wind of a rumor that Tomlinson will, in fact, sign with the Jets. Although you should file this under “rumor” rather than “report” right now, suffice to say that it’s a strong rumor coming from a good source.

Tomlinson was meeting with the Jets this afternoon, and the New York Daily News reports that Tomlinson is spending another night in town.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan are trying hard to get Tomlinson, who’s also considering the Vikings, to commit to the Jets, and the indications are that the Jets are going to get their man.

I don’t get this signing. Shonn Greene looked good last year. And don’t they still have Leon Washington?

Oh well, the Vikes are not desperate at runningback. Corner, Safety, DT, and OL are their primary needs.

  4. SoCalSean says: Mar 12, 2010 6:39 PM

Nice! As a Vikes fan that unfortunately had to watch the Chargers last year, this is great news! The dude is done.

Why on earth would you cut loose a healthy and productive Jones to replace him with a rickety and largely unproductive LT?

  6. markwhct says: Mar 12, 2010 6:41 PM

If LT signs he WILL be a 1,ooo yard rusher again.

  7. Cannon says: Mar 12, 2010 6:42 PM

Disappointing but like Mike Mayock said, New York is probably a “better fit”

  8. Dolphinatic says: Mar 12, 2010 6:42 PM

1 yr with Brett,,, or maybe 3+ to end his career with Sanchez. Plus he will get MANY more carries from the Jets. Carries and window for a ring probably are factors, the Jets are better off in those catagories. God I hate the Jets.
If I was him, I would pick the Vikings, they might win the whole thing next yr if Brett comes back. That being said, the Jets are the better 3 yr fit.

  9. KILLER FIN says: Mar 12, 2010 6:42 PM

They can have him!!! He won’t stay healthy all season anyway!!!

Good. The lowly Jets are a great place for an egomaniacal RB with no gas left.

yeah, but wait until rex ryan takes his shirt off; LT will be begging for the quickest flight to MN.
I think Thomas Jones would be a better fit for the Vikings. did he sign anywhere?

  18. Jack Acid says: Mar 12, 2010 6:54 PM

If the Vikes were serious, they should have never let him walk.
Still, NYJ has Shonn Green and Leon Washington. Seems like their needs are less for a guy like LT, who may be a regular season marvel but nothing more than a shrinking violet in the playoffs.
His best days are well behind him.

It may be a rumor, my gut feeling is he will sign with the Jets. He went to Minnesota just see what he was worth, and use that as a starting point. He had NO intentions of signing with MN none! Why would LT want to play behind AP. I was wanting LT to prove me wrong. What I have been saying all a long is looking good so far.

Better go back to Minny so you can play indoors, oh classy one.

  29. Skeety says: Mar 12, 2010 7:12 PM

That’s too bad, he would have had a chance to actually play in a Superbowl in Minnesota.

  30. last starfighter says: Mar 12, 2010 7:13 PM

Is it just me or the Jets getting softer this off-season?

  31. ZN0rseman says: Mar 12, 2010 7:13 PM

That doesn’t make any sense for Tomlinson because he would be their 3rd best option behind Leon Washington and Shonn Green, both younger, more powerful and faster backs with lots of life left in their legs.
To be quite frank, LT is a downgrade from either of them, and a slight downgrade from Chester Taylor for that matter, but at least with the Vikings, LT would get a large portion of the carries on 3rd down as a backup to AD. Qhereas with the Jets, all he would be is a publicity stunt who’s carries would hurt the team because he would be the least capable back on their roster. So, even though you’d like to think it’s not about the money, clearly in this case it must be, otherwise LT’s clear-cut choice would be the Vikings.

  35. nflhof says: Mar 12, 2010 7:28 PM

  36. Smitty Gill says: Mar 12, 2010 7:29 PM

LT is playing it cool because the Vikes offered him a very nice contract and he left saying “I’ll let you know”. Same will happen in New York cause LT wants to become a Saint and get his ring. No better place to do it !!!!!!I say……….

To that idiot who said aren’t the jets getting soft the offseason..
Shonn green is Thomas jones only younger and better
LT is the perfect mix of Leon and green. He brings the versatility that tj didn’t have he couldn’t catch a pass If his life depended on it.
Lito tackles just as badly as cromartie but cro can cover someone and Rhodes I’d the softerst safety in the league we replaced him with a fearless battering ram…the jets are doing sn outstanding job what final 4 rule?

  40. sportsd says: Mar 12, 2010 7:47 PM

LT is crazy to go to NY, play outdoors every home game and live in that conference where only Miami has decent weather. Remember him up in Foxboro in the snow? He’s nuts to pass up a dome and swing passes from Favre

  41. mnmaverick says: Mar 12, 2010 7:50 PM

  43. anjelmanning says: Mar 12, 2010 7:56 PM

People are talking about Leon Washington as if he has already proven something. Didn’t he tear up his knee last year as well?

  44. jetermkt55 says: Mar 12, 2010 7:58 PM

The Vikings are only a better contender if Favre comes back, and that is far from a certainty.
LT saw first hand how good the Jets defense is.
    LT knows the offensive system.
The Jets run the ball 30 times a game, and both of the teams options constantly get banged up.
NY has a new stadium, and essentially a new training facility.
He gets to end his career in a huge market, where he can then transition into his next career.
I refuse to believe LT has nothing left in the tank. The man was an absolute beast only a few years ago. More time to heal and a reduced role could do wonders for him.

  46. stetai says: Mar 12, 2010 8:04 PM

I hope he signs with the Vikings, but if he does sign with NY, it’ll be because they are paying him more than Thomas Jones which is plain dumb.
TJ is already in the system, was the most productive guy they had and could’ve been re-signed for less money than LT.
The Jets peaked last week when Jones was still a Jet and they traded for Cromartie. That lasted a week.
Cromartie now seems like not a great move, Jones signed with the Chiefs, and they’re going to depend on a broken down 32 year old LT to carry this team in snowy December.
    Jets 2010 record: 8-8

I would be first to say that Jets fans will miss Thomas Jones. He was a great Jet. He gave us all he had and probably desired better; however, he did run out of gas in the playoffs. I wish him all the best. He was a class act!
LT is a perfect fit for the Jets. Why? because Shonne Green and Thomas were similar backs.
LT is quick and will get alot of touches behind the best offensive line in football. Did anyone say 1,000 yards rushing and receiving? 🙂
He is a threat catching the ball out of backfield and on screen passes.
Finally, he is a stand up player. I saw his interview after the Jets beat the chargers in the playoffs and he man up and said that the Jets were the best defense he seen all year. Here will be a productive Jet, you can believe that!!
    Go J-E-T-S!! LT, Welcome Aboard!!

  49. realitypolice says: Mar 12, 2010 8:16 PM

  51. MrHumble says: Mar 12, 2010 8:18 PM

LT would be making a huge mistake if he signs with the Jets if his priority is getting a SB ring. Some people have very short memories. Yes the Jets made the playoffs last year and even won their first game against the gutless Chargers but don’t forget, the Jets didn’t even deserve and would not have made the playoffs had the Bengals and Colts not rested their starters in the last two games.

  52. Joewilly1969 says: Mar 12, 2010 8:19 PM

Let’s also not forget that SD offensive line wasn’t the best. If LT signs with the jets, he’ll be running behind one of, if not, the best offensive line in the league. And Brian schotty was in SD during some of LT’s best statistical years. I’m sure tannenbaum and Rex have plenty of bulletpoints for reasons LT should be wearing green and white next year

As a Jets fan, I don’t know what to think about this move. We are on the verge on signing, arguably, the best running back of the past decade. The problem with that is, he is the best running back of the PAST decade.
I think he can still be productive, and I know he thinks he can still be productive. That’s why choosing to sign with the Jets is a smarter move than signing with the Vikings. He is going to split the carries with Shonn Greene and probably be the third down back, depending on Leon Washington’s future. If he ended up in Minnesote he would be nothing more than a glorified mascot.

Come on it’s 1-2 million, but a cheapowner (because of a crappy stadium deal) fears paying market value.
Hopeflly when the Vikings move to California we can have the $$$$$$ to compete.

  61. moe says: Mar 12, 2010 8:55 PM

shonn green and leon are both injury prone and leon was my of a recieving back. L.T. would be a great fit because he give the jets depth and with there great o line he might have a good year. I think its better than having thhomas jones. i got so tired of watching him crash into the o line man instead of attacking holes. the oline was the reason they were the number 1 rush team

  62. kpweaver27 says: Mar 12, 2010 9:06 PM

LT definitely has a better chance at a ring in Minnesota. I’m a Colts fan, and we’re not exactly known for run defense here, but the Colts have throttled LT the last 2 or 3 times they saw him. I think he’s all but done.
The reason the Jets would cut Jones and sign LT is $$$$$$. I think he’d fit in best in Houston though.

You Viking fans amaze me. Your team has not even made a SB in 30+ years and you think a 40 year old with nothing left to prove has a better chance to win the SB next year. Favre has no chance in hell to put up those same numbers again. Try 25/20 if your lucky. If you do make the playoffs you will be outed before you reach the SB anyway. Come down to Earth fags!
    Well said!

  64. moe says: Mar 12, 2010 9:16 PM

Vikings are choke artists. There fans need to stop thinking they are going to the superbowl. Brett isnt coming back and if he does i doubt hell have the same year. He’ll wind up ruining the season for the vikings like he did for the jets. Packers are winning the division and the bears prolly have a better chance with the williams brothers out for 4 games. Jets got just as far and the vikings think they run things. LT is a professional and he wants to go to the team that give him a better chance to win a ring. He is gonna chose the jets and dont think you know more then someone in the leauge. by the way brett favre says that same “most talented team ive ever been on” stuff with every new team he joins

That’s why, except for the Yankees, titles are few and far between for NY teams. Take away the Yanks, and you have the 07 Giants and then……um….. yeah. Not much to talk about.

  80. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 13, 2010 12:01 AM

I thought the signing would be a good thing for the Vikings, but will not be surprised if he signs with the Jets. For one thing, I think the glamourous image of playing for a NY team will look appealing to LT, not to mention a sparkling new stadium, brand new workout facility, exciting young QB, the money, the strong Jets players, and the intoxicating fervor of Rex Ryan vs the Midwestern straightforwardness (if there is such a word) of Brad Childress.
All that being said, I’m not sure it would be a wise choice – there may be way too many touches for him to handle, and nobody gets down on a hero who doesn’t produce like NY fans.

Wow. Vikes fans are bitches. You talk like LT owes you something. Wow. Just wow. Y’all are fickle. You got the best RB in the league, and you’re going to bitch about THIS? Why aren’t you bitching about Chestor Taylor? He was awesome for you guys and you couldn’t keep him and he went to an inferior team in the division.
Vikes want to be REAL contenders SOOOO bad. Listen, when your QB isn’t officially playing this year, you are not a legit Superbowl contender and are NOT a good organization. Vikes fans catch emotions real easy.
Jets don’t get LT? Oh well, they’ll figure something out.
Vikes don’t get LT? LT’s kids get sent death threats.
Keep tellin yourself you’re on the same level as the Pats and Colts. Keep hypin yourself up and you’ll be the Chargers of the NFC. Except you’re old.
This isn’t me hating to hate right here, but, for real, I don’t know if the Vikes, WITH FAVRE, can win the division next year. They won’t be as dominant.

i think it would be a horrible mistake for LT to sign with the jets, but as a vikings fan i don’t really want him that much since i assume he is gonna get a better contract than TJ. i think that albert young may be able to carry the job, otherwise we can draft another back in a middle round. maybe vikes take a look at leon washington if LT signs with jets?

He better watch his ass walking around NY and NJ with the LT bullshit the real LT might just have to sack his ass
Yeah I’ve been thinking about that too. Think the local sports guys will call him that?
I don’t understand why so many people aren’t understanding that the Jets are establishing a 3 headed monster like the Saints and Giants had.

drooley etc. holy crap! he was due a 2.8m roster bonus which brought his 2010 cost to 5.8m! he signed with kc for 2 mil. a MUCH more rational number for a guy his age. he did run for a lot of yards; behind the best oline in football

Jets will miss Thomas Jones, but LT will help sell tickets in new stadium. Leon is coming back from breaking his leg.

    @ Adam
“keep telling yourself youre with the Pats and Colts”
Since when are the Pats on the same level as the Colts? The Pats fell off hard. They stink. Brady has declined. Moss has declined, Their best player Welker is done deal. Its over for those chumps in Boston. I’ll be so happy to hear them pout all season.
