Broncos pay $3 million roster bonus to Champ Bailey

bos_a_bailey_300.jpgThough he has spent 11 seasons in the NFL and has eased beyond the edge of his prime, Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey is still regarded as a quality player.

As a result, the Broncos picked up a $3 million roster bonus earlier this week, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

Klis reports that roster bonuses also were paid to running back Knowshon Moreno ($3.775 million), linebacker D.J. Williams ($3 million), and receiver Brandon Stokley ($500,000).

In addition to the roster bonus and another $500,000 in bonus money, Bailey will earn a base salary of $9.5 million.

It’s the final year of a contract extension that Bailey signed when he was traded to the Broncos in 2004, in exchange for running back Clinton Portis.

There have been no talks regarding a possible extension.  “We’ll see,” Bailey told Klis regarding the possibility of a new deal.  “If not, I’ll still be paid a lot of money this year.”

He definitely will be; at $13.1 million he was the highest paid cornerback in the league last year.  At $13 million, he’ll be near the top of the heap in 2010.

    Is he really worth it?

Hall of fame player, probably will retire without a ring though. I don’t see Kyle Orton leading the Broncos to the promised land anytime soon.

Yeah, Clinton has just been tearing em up lately……
Try and make that trade now. Sheesh.
Champ is still a premiere corner who sticks his nose in there and makes tough open field tackles.
He is a leader and a good human being.
He’s everything Cromartie wanted to be, but never will be.
He probably only has two years left, but he’s much better than what you could replace him with right now. Finally a good move from McD-Bag & Co.

Champ didn’t allow a single TD pass this year…he’s still in his prime

The Redskins definitely did NOT get the better end of that trade. I hated it then and it still annoys me to this day. I would love to see Champ come home to DC to end his career. How perfect would it be if there was a scenario in which Portis was released in order to sign Bailey? I can dream.

    I’ll go in order:
1, not worth every penny. he’s not the same player he used to be. he’s a top 10 corner, maybe. but playing against JaFatass and KC twice a year helps his stats. Also, 13 million for a top 10 corner is a LOT of money.
2, I hope that’s sarcasm as it sure isn’t sense.
3, Champ hasn’t been in his prime in 2-3 years. Like I said above, he’s a top 10 corner, but in his prime, Champ was THE corner.
Darrell Revis, Charles Woodson, Al Harris, Nnamhdi Asomugha, Ron Bartell, Cortland Finnagen (when healthy), DRC (Dominique Rogers-Cromartie) are better, and those are just the names off the top of my head. of course, this is only my opinion. :D

Hard to say if he is worth it or not. Nobody throw in his direction. Oh–wait.
He is worth it. Too bad Orton blows and we have no Center to snap the ball.

  11. BleedGreen says: Mar 13, 2010 5:30 PM

Thats actually the proper attitude for a football player to have. “If I don’t get an extension, I still make a LOT of money this year” rather than the normal “WAHHHHH! I ONLY MADE $6Million THIS YEAR! WAHHHHHH!”

  12. kurtismantronik says: Mar 13, 2010 5:42 PM

At this stage of his career, he’s only behind Revis and Asomugha as a shutdown corner and in the discussion with Winfield as the best tackling CB.
Outside of Revis, I couldn’t think of another CB I’d rather have on my team in 2010.

    Get that money Champ!!!

  14. mfclock says: Mar 13, 2010 7:18 PM

portis was done as soon as he stepped off the plane in DC. tatum bell was a decent replacement and shanny was tired of manning blowing us out in the playoffs. champ was one of the primary reasons why we went deep into the playoffs in 05, remember the near pick six against the pats.

  15. broncoman224 says: Mar 13, 2010 8:38 PM

How can you say that the Redskins got the better of that deal? Champ Bailey is the one of the best Cornerbacks of all time and was a huge reason they were in the AFC championship a few years back. What has Portis done in Washington? Oh I know what Portis has done… collect big paychecks while he sits injured on the sidelines! Champ is a stand-up man who has shown nothing but class and dignity! It’s nice to have a leader like Champ on the team!

Yeah thank gawd we got rid of that weird self obesessed cross dresser. Clint is just way tooo weird….
But sadly Champ is reaching the end of his “shutdown Corner” status. I am excited to see his (ala Rod Woodson) transition to “Shutdown Safety” :) :)

Revis, Woodson, Asomugha are the only better CB’s and not even by that much.
have you watched Bailey play recently? QB’s are still afraid to throw his way, he’s rarely challenged and when he is he makes plays still. Sure he’s not at his old level but he can still ball with the best of them.
On the redskins getting the better end of the trade?
No chance…after Portis left Denver went on to have Reuben droughns, mike Anderson, olandis gary, and tatum bell all post 1000+ yard seasons, making the shanny look like a genius.

  18. DeeDubb says: Mar 14, 2010 11:32 AM

For those few that are so delusional to think the Skins got the better end of the deal:
    Champ Bailey – HoFer
    Clinton Portis – NOT
