Coin toss to determine whether Jets or Giants get dibs on first game at new digs

So with a brand new stadium opening soon in New York Jersey and two teams sharing it and no NFL equivalent of calling shotgun, the Jets and the Giants needed to come up with a way to determine who’ll play the first home game there.

And in this age of high technology, they have resorted to a decidedly low tech device.

Flipping a coin.

Per the Jets’official web site, the league has said that a heads-tails contest will be used to decide who’ll get the right to christen the new venue.  The Jets, according to the report, have presented a plan for the flip to be held in the coming week.

They need to do it soon; the league will be unveiling the 2010 schedule in April.

The fact that a decision has yet to be made likely means that neither team will be hosting a prime-time event there in Week One.  If history holds, the games played under the lights during the first weekend of action will be announced during the annual league meeting that opens on March 21.

We’ll post on the outcome once the coin toss occurs; hopefully, there won’t be any interference.

Should have put the 2011 schedule in place for the 2010 schedule, and had the Jets play the Giants on Thursday night opening the season.

flipping a coin is 50/50 what do you want them to do hire a team of monkeys and put them in a room full of typewriters for an infinite amount of time?

Oh man I hope the Jets get it. It would be a nice FU to the Giants.

Love the coin toss. We learned in second grade that there’s nothing more fair than a coin flip. Good enough for deciding the first game, good enough for overtime.

  8. LetsGoPens says: Mar 13, 2010 8:36 PM

This is stupid (or stoopid for you Florio).
Maybe they should just adjust the schedule so the Jets-Giants faceoff in week one. Duh. That’d be a pretty nice way to break in the stadium.

I hope it’s the Giants vs the Cowboys so the Pokes can return the favor. :)

Or vice versa. Great idea. But in New York they would fight over who gets the Sunday game. And how they decide that…..?
    Coin please.

Another great idea. But the argument is over opening the REGULAR season. A tacit admission that pre-season games are useless drivel.
Let me just say, based on how the Giants closed out the old stadium, they probably shouldn’t be allowed to open the new one.
Patriots at Jets to christen the new digs!

  22. Zaggs says: Mar 13, 2010 9:20 PM

Well if the Jets had any real draw they would have their own stadium by now. So since they constantly have to rely on the Giants for a home, it should go to the Giants.

Here is an easy way to do it what team has won more SB?
What team has more players in the HOF.
What team has won more playoff games.
What team has a history as being one of the founding members of the NFL.
Easy answer the NY Football Giants
The JETS are now and always will be the second rate team the redheaded stepchild.
JETS fans became Jet fans because it was as close as they could get to real football.

  27. dhrodgers52 says: Mar 13, 2010 9:44 PM

Why don’t the Jets just play the Giants in the first week of the preseason so both teams set foot on the field at the same time? That way it won’t matter about the regular season. Or whoever gets the first regular season game, the other team should get the first preseason game.

  28. packfan4ever says: Mar 13, 2010 10:22 PM

Have them play each other week one. Would need beefed up security though.
One team plays Sunday other team plays Monday, both teams had decent seasons last year and would be fine playing Monday night.

After letting the Jets close the old GIANTS Stadium, the Giants should open the new Meadowlands.

  32. cizzie4shizzie says: Mar 13, 2010 10:51 PM

At least there being fair and not calling it Giants Stadium and having the G-Men hosting the first game

  33. Jaydub says: Mar 13, 2010 11:04 PM

This shouldn’t even be an issue. It was Giants stadium, and it will always be Giants stadium. The Jets finally do something after 40 years and they’re all of a sudden relevant?! Pay the rent on time and maybe…..just maybe….you might rise above the handle of tenants.

  34. MagicMan407 says: Mar 14, 2010 12:15 AM

The Jets shouldn’t even be brought into the convo! Obviously the Giants are a more respected team than the lucky Jets. It takes the Jets ALOT of luck just to make the playoffs…

  35. bh103 says: Mar 14, 2010 12:44 AM

Can’t wait to see how many empty seats there’ll be with their overpriced tickets.

  36. FordPSD60 says: Mar 14, 2010 12:49 AM

You guys who say they should play each other have looked over a major obstacle that the NFL already knew. It’s the ticket holders. They both have season ticket holders with the same seats. Of course they could flip a coin to see who stands and who sits.

  37. funi says: Mar 14, 2010 1:30 AM

Shouldn’t they be worried who will host 1st PLAYOFF GAME! Oh wait, neither team will make the playoffs so it does not matter! Or what coach will weigh less gets 1st REGULAR SEASON GAME!

  38. nyjshane88 says: Mar 14, 2010 1:50 AM

Of course the stuck up, snobby, multi generational, obnoxious Giants fans who look down their nose at the Jets are saying it should be them. Well newsflash, the Jets are the show in town now. I dont dislike the Gmen and I respect what they’ve done. However, this is NOT Giants Stadium anymore. You guys closed out the old place with a joke of a performance and we closed it out with a 38-0 win. The Jets are in better shape moving forward with a younger, more exciting, hungrier team and their rise continues at home in week 1 against either the Pats or Fins.

  39. dhrodgers52 says: Mar 14, 2010 3:01 AM

You are all morons anyway. The Jets don’t play the Giants this season. Only in the preseason. They should play preseason week 1 and the winner will host the first game of the season…

  40. D Hawk says: Mar 14, 2010 4:25 AM

dh, you are calling others morons, but your response is let a game in pre-season determine who gets a home game the first week? How is that at all possible, when the schedule is released in a few months?

  41. BroncoBourque says: Mar 14, 2010 9:10 AM

    Who cares?!?!?
Does it really matter who gets the first regular season game? It might mean something if it were actually the first event in the new stadium or even the first game but it’s neither, so what difference does it make.
And for all the Giants fans bashing the Jets and vice versa, YOU BOTH PLAY IN NEW JERSEY! Neither of you even plays in New York State, let alone New York City yet you are fighting over who is New York’s team for the right to play the first game in your new stadium in New Jersey.

  42. Jaydub says: Mar 14, 2010 9:33 AM

“Well newsflash, the Jets are the show in town now”
    ————————————–
They are merely the opening act, Shane. The headliners will be back on the main stage before you can blink an eye. One winning season doesn’t make the Jets any more relevant than they were at this time last year, just like one losing season doesn’t make the Giants as irrelevant as you want them to be.

I see you’ve been getting your history from Mike Greenberg. The New York Giants AREN’T one of the founding members of the NFL but ironically, the Jets, as the Titans, was one of the founding members of the AFL.

  47. nyjshane88 says: Mar 14, 2010 12:25 PM

    Jay,
A typical response from a typical Giants fan. I’ll make an educated guess here and say you’re prob a Yankee fan as well, displaying the same arrogance towards the Mets. The past is the past, and although the Jets have had more down years, they’ve certainly had their moments (as in arguably the most famous moment in football history). The reason for this is fear. No one disputes that you have the history and have been top dog. But now that the Jets are threatening you all get defensive cuz god forbid the Giants lose the spotlight for 3 seconds, “gotta put those damn Jets back in their place.” Let us have our fun the next couple years and you enjoy your upcoming 8-8 season.

I’m guessing that you must not understand the word FOUNDING because there’s NOTHING in that word that applies to the Giants.:
Found – To establish or set up, especially with provision for continuing existence
    Synonyms: create, establish, institute, organize.
Any of that apply to the Giants? The answer is not only no but HELL NO.
The Jets were part of the AFL in 1960, the same year that the league started playing – hence FOUNDING.

  50. Jaydub says: Mar 14, 2010 10:36 PM

Except I’m NOT a fan of either “New York” team, butt head. I was pointing out the fact that the Giants weren’t a founding member of the NFL, which is something that Mike Greenberg keeps saying (and he’s wrong, as well).
