Kevin Mawae re-elected as union president

Kevin Mawae, the 16-year veteran free agent center who played the last four seasons with the Tennessee Titans, was re-elected on Saturday as president of the NFL Players’ Association.

I’m thankful and humbled by my re-election as President of the NFL Players Association,” Mawae said in the union’s official announcement. “I believe it shows the faith and belief that the board has in me and my ability to continue to lead the players of the NFL through a period of uncertainty.”

The vote was taken at the NFLPA Board of Player Representatives Meeting in Maui. More than 100 players were present, and the union announced that the election was unanimous, although it’s common for both labor and management to announce all votes as unanimous to present a united front to the other side.

Mawae was first elected to a two-year term as president in 2008. He has served on the NFLPA Executive Committee since 2002 and was a player representative for five seasons before that.

The union also announced that Charlie Batch, Scott Fujita, Sean Morey and Brian Waters were elected to the Executive Committee, joining current members Drew Brees, Brian Dawkins, Domonique Foxworth, Tony Richardson, Jeff Saturday, Mike Vrabel and Mawae.

I saw an interview with him and De Smith when they were asked about the rookie out of control salaries, said “Not our fault, we didn’t create it and its not our problem. The owners can figure it out.” But then went on to say the owners need to take care of the retired players as that is there fault as well. He blamed every issue on the owners not willing to budge from there position.
Hmmm, who is not willing to work with the other side? Makes me really sorry the owners have to deal with these cry baby millionaires who just want more then what more, more, more. While the owners are billionaires who don’t want to give up more of the pot to the players, they have should realize what a sweet deal they have now. There getting paid a butt load of money to play football! Sure, its a short career span, but give me a break already. Most all got a free ride in college, all the breaks in life due to there athletic talents, and they still want more. Try that at a real job and see what happens. See how many people are waiting to replace you. Good luck, now suck it up princess and see how the real world works.

Ya, because unions are the employers, duh.
Wake up son, it’s companies that make money who hire people to work.
What unions do, besides drive up costs, is protect workers who otherwise couldn’t hold a job.
    Like you.

What makes me laugh are all the anti-union guys here and around this country. Since most of you have listened to management’s arguments about why a union is bad, you don’t even understand why unions are around in the first place. Many of you think of unions as Communist and the irony is that Karl Marx wrote his manifesto because of how the workers were being treated and if any of you believe that you’ve ever been treated badly by your bosses, you don’t even have a clue as to how bad it was (or will become). You may look at your benefits as manna from heaven but if the union hadn’t fought for them, you wouldn’t have them in the first place (as a part of management, you would have gotten them but not as an ordinary worker). Along with those who fought to upgrade the food standards in this country (something that those same managers are trying to make an end run around), the unions have done a lot to double the life expectancy of people since 1900.
I’ve heard some people tell a lot of stories against union but MOST are second and third hand. Let me tell you one that’s first hand: my mom’s boss wanted to fire her. Not because she did a bad job but because she was one of the highest paid workers and he wanted to give his brother-in-law her job and salary. He couldn’t demote her so he tried to trump up some charges to get her fired. The union fought him and she kept her job and he was forced to give his brother-in-law an entry level job, which paid good but about $5 an hour less than my mom.
Also, all the union workers’ kids got their shots and saw doctors regularly while our relatives, who weren’t part of any union, didn’t.
If management had ever treated their workers better, there wouldn’t be a union. In order to get unions out of their companies, management promises a lot of things to their employees and then gradually whittles these away without fear of a union.
I know that many people like to use the NEA or UAW or NFLPA as examples of how bad unions are but what about the mine workers union? Unions fought to try to keep children out of the factories and management fought it successfully until 1938. I wonder how many of you anti-union types would love to be taking the place of the Chinese kids that are making your Nikes, especially if you got paid like them.

We’re not a MFG country, genius, because we don’t “hire” 8 year olds to make sneakers.
