After pursuing unsuccessfully former New England tight end Benjamin Watson, the Seahawks still had a need at the position.
And they filled it by signing another tight end who most recently played for the Patriots.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Baker signed a two-year, $4.75 million deal with the Seahawks. He’ll make $2.75 million in 2010.
The Pats made no serious attempt to re-sign either player — but they now need to take serious steps to upgrade, either via free agency or the draft.
Good signing for the ‘Hawks. Jeremy Bates wants to run his 2 TE sets and Baker is a nice upgrade over the back-up that we had behind John Carlson last year, John Owens.
Owens was a blocking TE that literally couldn’t catch. Baker is decent in both areas.
The third TE on the ‘Hawks roster is Cameron Morrah but he’s still a work in progress.
Low risk signing. Hopefully, he can help free up Carleson in the passing game.
Owens was a blocking TE that LITERALLY couldn’t catch. Baker is decent in both areas.

John Owens, although not great, did catch 3 passes last year and 8 the year before that.
So he CAN catch.
haha
3 catches omg
even adrian peterson had at least that many, and i wouldnt say he can catch either
hope mike bell is next, followed by brandon marshall…
@ Stealth Hawk
Sorry to rain on your parade… but Baker isn’t a pass catching TE… as well, he’s prone to back-injuries and a non-stop whiner… which is why the Jets ousted him from their roster 2 years ago, and why the Pats decided not to bring him back in 2010.
The Seahawks continue to amaze me with their inept ability to scout talent in the NFL
Too bad they couldnt sign Ben Watson, guess they’ll have to do with what there gonna get out of Chris Baker.
Hey Florio,
You’re correct, they didn’t try to resign either guy.
You see ,Watson was a UFA and Baker was terminated/released.
Come on bud, accurate reporting, don’t be a hack.
PBA2 ~
Ok, so I shouldn’t have used the word “literally” but compared to the amount of balls thrown his way, 3 catches is nothing.
I know he was a back-up and only came in to block but you need a back-up that can come in and be counted on to at least be decent out there.
I remember a game last season where 3 clanked right off his hands before Hasselbeck decided, “Yeah, maybe this guy can’t catch.”
I’m sorry Stealthhawk, I was in a bad mood.
“they now need to take serious steps to upgrade, either via free agency or the draft.”

No need, we’re going with 8 wides and no tight ends this season. Gonna light it up, arena league style.
Until Moss quits around week 8.
tacious- when did I say Baker was a pass-catching TE? I said he’s a decent blocker and receiver and a much better backup than John Owens (not saying much).
Quit putting words in my mouth, I know who he is.
Inept at evaluating talent? For God’s sake, they simply signed a back-up TE. That’s right, a BACK-UP TE. They didn’t sign him thinking he was Ozzie Newsome.
You should be saying the Browns are inept at evaluating talent as they outbid themselves to get Benjamin Watson.
Honestly, you just sound like a hater, probably a 49ers fan if I were to guess.
Besides, either way it doesn’t matter. We brought him in to BLOCK. Carlson is a perfectly capable starter.
I HOPE they KEEP developing TE Cameron Morrah, I believe that kid is going to be really good one day.
I’d rather get Baker at $2M against the cap next year than Watson with his 3 year $12M contract. There weren’t many TEs out there, and for the money this is OK. As for those that think they should fill this position in the draft – the Seahawks can’t spare any draft choices for a backup (except for O Line… like Tony Washington in the 5th Round).
