Welker also recovering from torn rotator cuff

W. Welker.jpgWes Welker’s offseason of rehab just got a lot harder.

The Patriots wide receiver is recovering from a torn rotator cuff in addition to the reconstructive surgery he underwent on his knee.

The blog Big Rips had the news first, and multiple Patriots reporters have since confirmed it.  The Boston Globe reports Welker has already undergone surgery.

It’s unclear how this will change Welker’s recovery timetable, if at all.  In most cases, his knee rehabilitation would still be his primary focus.  The severity of his shoulder tear is uncertain, but the message is clear:

Julian Edelman better get ready for a major role in 2010.

The knee will still take longer to come back from that this shoulder. He’s likely to miss the beginning of the season with the knee anyway. Not that shoulder surgery helps.

as if his career wasnt f–ked enough as it was.
thats right, florio, youve reduced me to censoring ‘profanities’ to express my semi-pro opinions. hope youre happy.

With Welker probably out till Novemeber (effective) and whats now an Average Defense the pressure really comes down on Tom Brady next year.
It doesn’t look like NE is going the FA route for another receiver so they probably will look for one in the draft. They have enough picks to grab one or two with potential.
New England’s success next year probably hinges on Moss’ performance as it looks like Brady will run out of weapons.

His career is in danger. The Patriots should have traded for Q.

It will be really tough season for NE, especially since the other teams in that division are finally getting good

Fearless across the middle for a guy his size, I am amazed that he lasted this long. I don’t think we will see the old Welker when, or if, he returns.

Today is March 13th. Rotator cuff surery is not a long healing process. Within two months he should have full range of motion. Also, he is not a QB.
The bigger issue is his ACL and will likely start the season on the PUP.

Crazy to think but how much does this affect his speed and agility in the long run?

Bad news. Another thing he has to overcome.
Good news. He can do while recovering from knee surgery.
He won’t back on the field any time before week 7. That is 7 months away. The shoulder won’t be a problem by then. The knee still will.
While this is interesting news, it’s not a setback.

Not a pats fan but I love me some Welker.
    Godspeed Wes!!!

If he gets surgery the rotator cuff should be healed and ready to go in 6 months… though he should be able to resume running and everything other than blocking and upperbody weight training in a month. His rehab after the surgery should start immediately after the surgery.
I would say there is no doubt that the rotator cuff injury is not a concern when compared to the recovery of his ACL which will take him 9 months until he should safely be on the field.

Wes Welker is one of those guys I can’t stand when he catches the ball over and over again against my team. If he was on my team, though, I’d be very proud to cheer for him, for playing hard every single play, getting that extra yard when others just step out of bounds.
That’s my idea of a great football player.

I don’t think we will see the old Welker when, or if, he returns.
Or maybe, you hope we won’t?

It is indicative of the pounding Welker takes virtually every game. Another reason why Brady needs to spread the rock.
Welker has the heart of a lion.
To some extent he has learned to protect his body, which will help when he returns. Whereas Edelman kept fighting for yards after stepping into the slot role and had his head handed to him on a number of plays.
The smaller guys need to protect themselves and pick and choose when to give up the body.

Two HUGE injuries. He’s on his way out. Edelman will have to step up.

  17. FireJerryJones says: Mar 13, 2010 11:39 AM

That is one tough SOB in a pint sized package.
Still can’t believe he got up after the hit he took against Steelers.
Too many guys won’t pay the price over the middle. Maybe he’s just not that smart.

As a dolphins fan, I should be happy about this. However, someone with Welkers personality and abilities is hard to root against. I wish the Fins never would have traded him…especially to the Pats. I never like to see injuries to players of Welker’s caliber. Best of luck to you Wes! If you want to sit out the two games the Pats and Fins play next year…I guess I wont complain…

Best case scenario is that he’s back for the playoffs.
