Cowboys planned well for the uncapped year

Many league observers have wondered why the Cowboys haven’t spent much money in free agency.  The “Final Eight Plan” only goes so far in explaining the lack of activitity, especially since the Cowboys are in the bottom half of the octet, allowing them to sign at least one player for more than $5.8 million in the first year, and as many as they want for $3.8 million or less in the first year, with 30 percent annual growth.

The bigger reality is that, as we’ve previously mentioned, the Cowboys already have committed plenty of cash to 2010, in the event that 2010 would proceed without a spending cap.

As pointed out in the team-by-team cap list, the Cowboys would lead the league in cap dollars, with more than $153 million already committed in 2010.

But the Cowboys wouldn’t have been forced to dump players en masse if a new labor agreement had been negotiated before March 5.  Per a league source, many of the big-money deals contain terms allowing the Cowboys to convert money due in 2010 into guaranteed payments, which would have helped the Cowboys get under the cap by pushing current cap charges into future years.

Anyway, that’s why they aren’t spending big money in 2010.  While building their current team, they already have.  As a result, owner Jerry Jones will spend well over 10 percent of the full cost of the North Texas Football Cathedral on player costs this year, as he tries to ensure that his team will qualify to play the first Super Bowl hosted in his new stadium.

Then, if a cap returns in 2011, the Cowboys will be able to maneuver more easily because they had pushed a bunch of cash obligations into the uncapped year.

Did you just use 6 paragraphs of explanation to try and compliment the Cowboys on planning well, without actually saying something nice about them?

If you are a Cowboy fan and you can’t see that the team has become a (failing) extension of his ego, I pity you. Jerry Jones: Billionaire, NFL Team owner and GM, ass.

Jerry Jones = “George Steinbrenner wannabee”

This team is so talented, it’s hard to see where they need an upgrade. Maybe free safety and some o-line depth, but there aren’t going to be a lot of free agents that can come in and start right away. Too many good players on the team.

  12. DoomsDayD75 says: Mar 14, 2010 3:48 PM

It’s funny how the only joy Redskins fans get is when the
Cowboys lose, since their team is always so mediocre.

    HAIL SKINS!

  15. falcon3 says: Mar 14, 2010 4:12 PM

Too bad they still have the same coaching staff that has failed them the past three years with roughly the same set of players.

  16. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 14, 2010 4:25 PM

The ‘boys have been very good in recent years acquiring and managing their talent so this comes as no surprise. I particularly like Jerry Jones or Tony Romo but I freely admit it would not be a shock to see them hoist the Lombardi next year.

  17. Quagmire says: Mar 14, 2010 4:28 PM

So basically they’ll be going in with the same team that ended their season getting stomped by the Vikings 34-3.
    Genius, pure genius.

we will win the SB this yr no doubt about it. This team is stacked and with last yrs and this yrs draft picks stepping in/up to fill the problem areas which are very few they will cruise to a home SB victory…..
    HOW BOT THOSE COWBOYS!!!!!

  19. Rickah99 says: Mar 14, 2010 5:18 PM

Who cares, it’s just the Dallas Cowboys. They have not been relevant in over a decade.

  20. .VoxVeritas says: Mar 14, 2010 5:41 PM

    I’d say that
    20-16
    24-0
    and 34-14
makes them pretty relevant. Unless you’d like to admit that the 0-3gles haven’t been relevant since way before the merger, Rick.

  21. mzezulak says: Mar 14, 2010 5:43 PM

    Superbowl?… Superbowl?

  22. .VoxVeritas says: Mar 14, 2010 5:55 PM

I think that refs blow whistles on every play whether there’s a penalty or not, but if you want to talk penalties, the Cowboys only had 93 total. Giants had 88, Redskins had 98, 0-3gles had 104, making them the worst disciplined team in the NFCE by far and in the bottom third of the entire NFL.

  23. mil2000 says: Mar 14, 2010 5:59 PM

Planned well? 153 mil. Hmmm, if they where trying to retain a team that just won a championship maybe.
Does anyone else get the housing bubble feeling when reading about owner Jerry Jones and his Cowboys Stadium? Don’t get me wrong I wish him the best, I just hope that the whole deal isn’t over extended. I think he has 800 million and Arlington has 300 million into it. I would like to know what is the collateral for the 800mil note? League, Team or other? I understand the team makes allot of money but you have all these other teams that get there stadiums paid for and have little too no expense. Then you have Jerry paying 2.5 times what city’s paid for. Not to mention the financial crisis, and pos. lockout looming. Makes your head spin.

You wish the Failcons could put together a record like the Cowboys have over the past three years. In fact I believe that the Failcons have never put together three winning seasons in a row in their entire history.

“So basically they’ll be going in with the same team that ended their season getting stomped by the Vikings 34-3.”
Basically the same team that got beaten 44-6 by the 0-3gles once upon a time, too. How’d that work out for you in ’09?
    20-16
    24-0
    34-14
    That’s how.

  26. .VoxVeritas says: Mar 14, 2010 6:11 PM

“How much is RW getting paid this year? 11 million?”
Not exactly sure. Probably less than Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas and Marko Mitchell made last year for their 6 combined TD catches. Which is less than the number of TD passes that Roy Williams caught (7).

True, but not many teams can see revenue upwards of $350 million per year brought in by their stadium. That’s Forbes’ estimate. They say that after debt payment, the stadium will provide an estimated $280 million.
    http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/30/football-values-09_Dallas-Cowboys_300988.html
The Cowboys new stadium will be a gold mine this season. The team has sold most of the premium seating and sponsorships to their new stadium. Annual revenue from the stadium will be around $350 million, before debt payments. During the next couple of years Cowboys will be hosting an NBA All-Star game, NCAA Men’s basketball Final Four and a Super Bowl. Look for team owner Jerry Jones to wait for the economy to improve before selling the stadium’s naming rights for a record amount for a football team.

and why not, with a stadium filled with drunk, stupid rednecks willing to pay $60 for a pizza, $66 for a 12-pack of domestic beer, or $29 for a “Party Pass” where you can’t see the field and you walk about in piss, puke and spilled beer.

VOX, you dont get any kind of trophy for your team beating the eagles last season.HaHa! And last years team wasnt the same Eagles team that beat your cowboys 44-6 either. No Dawkins, but more importantly no Stewart Bradley! He’ll be back next season though! And you cowboy fans watch romo win 1 F’n playoff game and all of the sudden you guys are Super Bowl bound???? lol. What is he, 1-3 in playoff games, and you haters wanna talk shit about McNabb?? Romo has ALWAYS had multiple playmakers around him with a decent defense too. Now go ahead and talk about your teams history. All you cowboy fans sound like Al Bundy talking about his 4 TD’s and how good things USED TO BE at Polk High!! Get over it.

  35. Big Tex says: Mar 14, 2010 9:26 PM

Well buddha, you’re right. It has been awhile since the Cowboys’ last NFL Championship. BTW, how long has it been since the Eagles’ last NFL Championship? Wasn’t Eisenhower in the White House? Were you even alive?
Let’s see, the Eagles have been around almost 80 years and they have 3 NFL Championships. Jerry has owned the Cowboys for 21 years and yet, he has the same number. Scoreboard.
So it was Brian Dawkins’ fault that the only team the Eagles beat who had a winning record was the Falldowns? And that was without Matt Ryan. Stewart Bradley won’t solve the match-up problems that Philly’s DL has with the ‘Boys OL. Lost to the Raiders, the 7 straight double-digit losing season Raiders. The JaMarcus Russell, worst starting QB in the NFL, lead Raiders.
Sorry buddha, but it appears as if you have a ways to go before you reach enlightenment.

I love the cowboys fans obsession with eagles. It cracks me up. I am still waiting for vox to answer the question about how they havent improved the team after getting smoked 34-3. Please answer the question. The eagles have nothing to do with it…..were waiting?????
1 playoff win in 14 years. If you think the eagles are terrible, what does that make the cowboys over the last 14 years of disappointment.
No one cares about 30 years ago.
PS. I have seen a photo circulating around of you. Long hair went out about the last time dallas was even relevant. So what whatever you say back about your boys, I just think about that picture and laugh….HAHAHA!

  37. Daddy Mateo says: Mar 15, 2010 12:36 AM

whocaresaboutdallas…for starters, if your name on here is whocaresaboutdallas then anyone here that has the comprehension of a 5 year old knows that you obviously care a little more about Dallas than you want people to know. It says a lot when your moniker on this site bashes a team and a city instead of actually being a fan of someone else.
That being said, the same Dallas team that closed out 2008 losing to the Eagles 44-6 came back in 2009 with little improvement and won the NFC East at 11-5 winning their first playoff game since 1996 (which so many people have pointed out). So yes, us Dallas fans are expecting to see improvement once again this season because for the first time in a while, we are seeing an actual TEAM come together and get better every year.
You ask us why we obsess with the Eagles, well for over a year we have been tormented by the 44-6. So in 2009, we didn’t beat them once, we didn’t beat them twice, we beat them down THREE times so to us it feels pretty good, so why don’t you just let us enjoy it.
Oh and that “No one cares about 30 years ago” crap, it was actually only 15 years ago that we won 3 out of 4 Super Bowls…I know that was a completely different team, but it still happened. How many fans of other teams can say that they saw something like that???
