Jets' claim on coin toss called into question

On Saturday a story on the Jets’ official web site reported that a coin toss would be used to determine whether the Jets or Giants got to host the first game at the teams’ new stadium.

The league office says Commissioner Roger Goodell, not a coin, will make that decision.

The New York Daily News reports that an NFL spokesman (who curiously isn’t named in the report) said on Sunday that Goodell is the one who “determines the schedule,” and that “Other than that, we have no announcements on the schedule now.”

A Giants source told the Daily News that the Jets have been pushing the coin toss idea because they think the league is planning to give the game to the Giants.

The Jets, however, stand by their story, and team spokesman Bruce Speight says, “We look forward to the coin toss.”

  3. PatsRPerfection says: Mar 14, 2010 3:37 PM

Giants should get the first game, the Jets, their fans, and Mike Tennenbaum are all scum bags. Plus Giants are a far better franchise.

  4. BornSlippy says: Mar 14, 2010 3:43 PM

Jets are the second class team, i love how they think they are big time.

  6. tacious says: Mar 14, 2010 3:47 PM

As a Jets fan… I could care less who plays the “first” game there, as both teams will have a chance to debut their new stadium!

  7. Tr3pidation says: Mar 14, 2010 3:47 PM

Jets should open the season. They made the playoffs, they made it to the AFC Championship, they deserve it way more than the Giants.

  8. Bob S. says: Mar 14, 2010 3:47 PM

Fact is the first game is the first PRE-SEASON game played there.

  9. Krow says: Mar 14, 2010 3:48 PM

The Jets have always had a jealously problem when it comes to the Giants. They really need to stop defining themselves that way… and to move on with their own identity. You can’t go back in time… the Giants will always be the older, storied franchise.
Most Giant fans don’t have a problem with the Jets. We wish them well… and hope they have success. Too bad it’s not reciprocated.

  10. tacious says: Mar 14, 2010 3:53 PM

I still think it would be great if the Jets & Giants partnered with Jet Blue Airlines for the naming rights to the stadium… “Jet Blue Stadium” would be perfect; however, I have a feeling that Giant fanbase out there wouldn’t be able to deal with ‘Jet’ coming before ‘Blue,’ and would thus throw a ‘Giant’ tantrum.

  11. eagleheem says: Mar 14, 2010 3:56 PM

Let them play each other so they can both shut up!!!

  12. brownsfn says: Mar 14, 2010 3:57 PM

  13. PackFanNChiTown says: Mar 14, 2010 4:04 PM

Goodell will give the glory to the Giants and the Jets will get sloppy seconds…

  18. dlr4skins says: Mar 14, 2010 4:21 PM

Why are they allowed to share a venue?
It is a disadvantage to all teams in both divisions as it complicates the schedule, thus it also indirectly attributes to bye weeks to those teams.
Stop being step children and build your own!

  19. markwhct says: Mar 14, 2010 4:23 PM

It ain’t called GIANTS stadium no more. A coin flip sounds better than letting the politically motivated Goodell figure it out.

  20. Devils Advocate says: Mar 14, 2010 4:24 PM

  25. mrzazz41387 says: Mar 14, 2010 4:43 PM

Giants don’t deserve it after the performance they gave to close out the old stadium. The Jets had to do it for them.

  26. Bigbluefan says: Mar 14, 2010 4:49 PM

Who really gives a shit what the jets want
They are the redheaded step child they will get what the Giants dont want

  27. Bubby Brister says: Mar 14, 2010 5:04 PM

Well, you can guarantee the first preseason game will be Jets/Giants. They should just try their best to hype that up as the grand opening. There’s no real fair way to solve this.
If the schedule is ever expanded, I’ve always hoped that the extra games can be correlated amongst the teams, the way preseason and college games are. You could get some cool rivalries (Jets/Giants every year, Steelers/Eagles every year) out of that and avoided this issue…

  28. Master Bates says: Mar 14, 2010 5:07 PM

They should just have both teams play each other on the opening day.

  29. FireJerryJones says: Mar 14, 2010 5:22 PM

Maybe the JETS are saying that Roger flip flops on some issues….

  30. JD9493 says: Mar 14, 2010 5:37 PM

I feel like the Jets should get the game, the Giants had Giants stadium and I just think it would be cheating the Jets for the new stadium. Yes, they will share the stadium but I think it’ll be better for the Jets. Not to mention, the Jets had a better season last year. But they should have the Jets and Giants play each other. It would be a pretty cool way to open the stadium.

  31. KingJoe! says: Mar 14, 2010 5:48 PM

maybe they should just play each other.

  32. Paulitik says: Mar 14, 2010 5:56 PM

I’m no fan of either NY team, but the Jets are going to be the dominant team in that city for the next decade. That Defense is going to be unstoppable. They might as well call it Jets Stadium.

  33. Sock_Puppet says: Mar 14, 2010 6:15 PM

They should just both play each other, and whoever has the most PSLs sold is the Home team. Sorry Jets fans, you’ll still be the visiting team to your own opener. Losers.

  34. NYG27343856869007 says: Mar 14, 2010 6:17 PM

The Giants are a cornerstone NFL franchise. They have 7, count them 7 NFL titles. They’ve won a title in almost every decade. They’ve won 3 super bowls. They are amongst the most storied, if nt the most storied NFL franchise.
Are the jets dumb enough to think they will open the stadium? The jets are bunch of classless bumbs. Go gestablish a fan base before u worry about the first game at……GIANTS STADIUM.

NYG32737238 you sound like such a smart person, sorry but stadium is 50/50 now buddy no more giants stadium. nice close out of giants stadium by the giants by the way, the Jets closed out that stadium perfectly

  37. ajrod says: Mar 14, 2010 6:36 PM

  38. kev86 says: Mar 14, 2010 6:50 PM

heads Giants win, tails Jets lose.
whose practice facility is next to the new stadium?
jets need to win another SB before given anything. maybe just an afc championship or a couple afc east titles to start. gmen even had to beat the undefeated pats.
giants should get the first game because of who they are.
    sorry jetsies.

  39. Bigbluefan says: Mar 14, 2010 6:56 PM

For you idiots who say let them play each other it still has to be a home game for one of the two teams.
As the home teams fans would have the right to the seats.
Trust me I wish the Giants did have there own place the stench of decades of jets losses is hard to get out of the air.
And for the idiot who said it is unfair that they share.
In the NYC area with the highest cost of land and labor in the country it was a smart idea.
Maybe the Raiders and 9ers should catch on and do the same thing. But that would require Al Davis to get his head out of his ass.

  40. Sock_Puppet says: Mar 14, 2010 7:18 PM

The Jets are like the 40-year old, recently divorced brother in law that you originally said “sure, you can stay with us until you get your crap together”, and 2 years later he’s put on another 200 lbs, is unemployed, reeks of cigarettes & fried chicken and has a permanaent encampment in your basement. Damn, tenants.

  41. Krow says: Mar 14, 2010 7:53 PM

“nice close out of giants stadium by the giants by the way, the Jets closed out that stadium perfectly”
This is what I mean… no matter how good the Giants do… and that includes Superbowl wins… they never come and try to rub it in on the Jets. It’s really weird that Jet fans can’t shake this inferiority complex. It’s been 40 years… c’mon.

  42. FootballFanatik says: Mar 14, 2010 8:13 PM

The MEADOWLANDS opening game should be between the two teams. Team that had the best record last season should be the home team.
I am a fan of neither team, but Giants fans: shut up and check out your team’s record from last year. Cupcake teams started you at 5-0, then the REAL season started and you CHOKED!!
The laughter over your team’s performance was like sweet music. And, great way to end your career in your stadium. That last Giants game was awesome!! ….(cue laughter again.)

“I am a fan of neither team, but Giants fans: shut up and check out your team’s record from last year. Cupcake teams started you at 5-0, then the REAL season started and you CHOKED!!”
And the Jets backed in with gift wins against the scrubs of teams that had it locked up.

It is… as long as Jet fans feel the need to make statements like this. Don’t blame your inferiority complex on us. We really don’t care any more about the Jets than we do the Dolphins or the Raiders. This is your problem… not ours.

  45. BoneCrusher says: Mar 14, 2010 8:41 PM

The Giants will OPEN the new stadium.
    Mystery solved!

Big Blue, Your wife told me the real reason they call you that, you cant get it up no more, so big blue balls is the real reason behind your gay ass username, the Jets had to close out Giants stadium last year, not your sorry ass Giants, we now own half, yes half, no more renting dickhead, say hi to the old lady for me prick.

  48. mrzazz41387 says: Mar 14, 2010 9:26 PM

I love how Giants fans make such a big deal about all the championships they have won. The one thing they fail to mention is that there were only a hand full of teams. The chances of winning something were pretty damn good. Enjoy your cracker-jack championships.

  49. NYG27343856869007 says: Mar 14, 2010 9:31 PM

TFBuckFutter: moron, the giants did win in the 20′s – 1927. They are the first franchise of the current MFL franchises to win an NFL title.
The jets weren’t around back then, so u clearly weren’t aware. Typical jets fan.
Go win 6 more titles and then compare your jets to the giants.

  50. Krow says: Mar 14, 2010 9:41 PM

“I love how Giants fans make such a big deal about all the championships they have won.”
Yeah… we do. It’s all part of that long history you Jet fans envy. Get over it… grow up… stop defining yourselves by how you relate to us. it’s flattering… but a little creepy too.

  51. Bob Nelson says: Mar 14, 2010 9:51 PM

The Giants have the third most championships behind the Packers(12) and Bears(9).
They are the senior team in New York and have the larger fan base.
The AFL/AFC conference will always be the junior conference.
The Jets are sharing GIANTS stadium and parasites should not be first to use the stadium.

  52. FootballFanatik says: Mar 14, 2010 10:05 PM

Krow….reading is fundamental. I am seeing Jets bashing by Giants fans and I responded, as a FAN OF NEITHER TEAM.

  54. DM725 says: Mar 14, 2010 11:32 PM

    Lets think about this….
The Jets play in Giants stadium, the Giants are the franchise with multiple superbowl wins, the Giants are the big ticket and the Jet fans think bc they got to an AFC championship they should host the initial game of the stadiums history?
The Giants won the Superbowl in 07 and are the #1 Football franchise in NY. The Jets are a joke…

  55. nyjshane88 says: Mar 14, 2010 11:35 PM

    FootballFanatik
Thanks for providing a neutral opinion. As a Jets fan its really not that big a deal who opens it up. They should give the Giants sunday at 1, and the jets a monday night game or other way around in week 1. Seems fair to me. The reason for the endless amounts of Jets bashing these days is because the Giants fans can see the enormous potential the Jets have right now and they’re scared they might lose the spotlight for a year or 2. The Giants are like a big corporation, they want all the power and god forbid anyone else rise up and take a drop away from them. Jets fans dont care or have anything against the Gmen, at least I dont. I was cheering for them to beat the Pats 2 yrs ago. Then again I’d root for Al Qaeda before I root for the Pats.

  56. nyjshane88 says: Mar 14, 2010 11:40 PM

    Krow
Giants fans dont rub anything in Jets fans faces? What planet are you on? Giants fans are just like Yankee fans. When they see they’re losing an argument, duuh duuh duuh 7 championships!!! Good one. They all disregard maybe the biggest game in NFL history in the Jets win in Super Bowl 3, yet they count they’re “championships” from the 1920s and 30s when there were only a handful of teams in the league and you practically started the season in the playoffs.
