More impressive workout numbers for C.J. Spiller

Six months before he’ll be asked to perform in a helmet and shoulder pads in meaningful NFL games, Clemson running back C.J. Spiller is continuing to perform impressively in his underwear in front of NFL scouts.

Spiller leaped 10 feet, 6 inches in the broad jump at Clemson’s pro day, which would have been the best broad jump for any running back at the combine. Tennessee’s Montario Hardesty and Auburn’s Ben Tate tied for the longest broad jump among combine running backs, at 10 feet, 4 inches, while Virginia cornerback Chris Cook leaped 11 feet, the longest broad jump at the combine for any player of any position.

That pro day broad jump follows a combine performance at which Spiller registered a very fast official 40-yard dash time of 4.37 seconds — and several scouts clocked Spiller at significantly faster times than that.

Even before the combine, Spiller was widely regarded as the best running back in this year’s draft. He’s solidified that status over the last couple of weeks.

Everybody knows how well good broad jumpers translate to the NFL. There’s an old saying where I come from. It goes, if you can broad jump, then you can play running back in the NFL.

Can he take a hit though? I have never seen him play so I really don’t know. Any Clemson fans out there know if this kid can take a pounding?

he’ll look GREAT in a Niners uniform,… definitely will make Alex Smith a better QB, Jimmy Raye a better OC, & Mike Singletary a better HC

I hope the Skins can trade down to get this guy.

I’m thinking maybe the Browns should take him at 7. Yeah we’ve got Harrison, but look what Chris Johnson was able to do in Tennessee. Cleveland has a good O-Line and improved their QB situation.
On the other hand Eric Berry is a monster. Everyone fell in love with CB’s this year because of what Revis did. How quickly they forget what an impact Ed Reed and Troy M. have had with their defenses.
Final choice would be to trade the pick for Brandon Marshall and give Delhomme the long ball threat he needs.

    The underwear trials mean nothing.

He’s only the best RB in a weak class. Last yr, he goes 2nd rd.

Being a Clemson fan, I watched him play his entire career. He is going to be a good mid-first round pick. He is a playmaker and yes he can take a hit but he is also lighting fast.

If Williams and Bulaga are gone by 13 I hope he’s the pick, no question.

Started to wonder if GB was paying attention to Spiller, but then I caught myself. Silly! They’re way too busy hiring short WRs and checking out basketball players.

Luxury pick. Reggie Bush. Great complimentary back, not an every down back. He will be a gamebreaker given a decent line but don’t expect too much near the goal line.

he can give you field position, a shorter field, by his abilities to return kicks,…he’s Percy Harvin/DeSean Jackson, you can move him around on offense & get him in space on a LB or DB, where if they miss it could be a big play, with that type of ability to break a big play, how does that not help Gore, Crabtree & Davis to be more effective, knowing the defense has to account for where Spiller is lined up on offense?…Alex Smith will be a much more effecent QB w/a weapon like that…i’m thinking Spiller is a top 5, or top 10 prospect, and IF he’s rated that highly how do you not grab him at 13, and get your OT with the 17th pick? …are you listening SCOT McCLOUGHAN?

  16. Merton Hanks says: Mar 15, 2010 2:01 AM

Only thing is, if you’re taking an OT at 17 it’s probably Anthony Davis or Bruce Campbell, and I don’t know if either of them are worthy of that pick. Saffold or Ducasse or Veldheer in the 2nd if fine with me. Spiller and Graham/Wilson/Iupati/E Thomas is ok with me.

This kid is a stud. He reminds me of Brian Westbrook. Take away his running, he beats you with his receiving, take away his receiving and he beats you with his returns. He scored a td in every game he played in last season.I just hope where ever he ends up he doesn’t get over used the way A.Reid over used Westbrook. Also this years RBs aren’t as weak as some might think(organized chaos) While the top talent might not be overly studly, it is an overall deep RB class. Alot of players with good college production who also performed well at the combine. A few from the SEC come to my mind, maybe you should look at the guys and evaluate what they have done before you claim its a weak class. Last year he may have only been a 2nd rd pick but thats because Clemson had a talented and crowed backfeild.

At what point in an NFL game do any of the players perform a Broad Jump?

  19. Sasquash says: Mar 15, 2010 2:36 PM

Many scouts feel broad jump shows leg drive or explosion.

  20. Merton Hanks says: Mar 15, 2010 2:53 PM

I don’t think CJ Spiller, Ryan Mathews, Jahvid Best, and Jonathan Dwyer make for a weak RB class, but maybe that’s just me.
The broad jump might not appear in an NFL game but if you don’t think it’s a good bellwether for explosion and leg strength, then I just strongly disagree with you, good sir.
