Rex Ryan underwent weight-loss procedure

As it turns out, the “scheduled procedure” that Jets coach Rex Ryan underwent Saturday was intended to assist with weight loss.

Specifically, the Associated Press reports that Ryan had “lap-band” surgery on Saturday at NYU Medical Center.  He was at home in New Jersey the same day.  The procedure, which is less invasive and risky than gastric bypass, places an adjustable band around the stomach.

In 2002, Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis nearly died after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.  He later called it “probably the biggest mistake of my life.”

Ryan reportedly weighed 340 pounds at the start of the 2009 season, gaining at least 30 pounds since becoming the team’s head coach.

Hey, i just posted this in the last post you had about this.
Screw you for turning this into a negative comparing this to Weis and his experience.
Weis suffered from mal practice. Cmon Mike, stop being…well, you

Rex should just stuff a sock in his pie hole Will lose weight and improve his image. Could use killing 2 birds with one stone here but I’m sure he’d just eat it.

  4. BonnieD says: Mar 14, 2010 5:38 AM

First of all, it’s his personal business about his own health, so it’s really, really, cheap and low class of you to put this on here. You continue to sink to new lows since you sold out to NBC.
Second, lap band surgery and gastric bypass are not the same. Why compare them? Lap band surgery is much less evasive and risky.

  5. OscarMooseFarmer says: Mar 14, 2010 5:49 AM

    @BonnieD.. evasive huh?

  6. Krow says: Mar 14, 2010 6:02 AM

Anyone else get the impression that Rex is crazy?

  7. TampaJoey says: Mar 14, 2010 6:35 AM

Rex Ryan is fat loud-mouth jerk. Now that he’s working on fixing the fat part, when is he gonna work on fixing the loud-mouth jerk problem?

  8. Ken Grant says: Mar 14, 2010 6:53 AM

The lap band is a better tackler than their new corner.

When writing this article Florio….Did you stop and think for a second?….It’s 3:30 in the morning and i’m writing about some guy who had a rubber band placed in his body so he doesn’t gorge himself to death. And, getting paid for it….Nobody could have ever predicted this as a career move.

@tampajoey. rex ryan is a fat loud-mouth. i’ll happily join you in calling him a jerk if he doesn’t bring winning football to a super bowl starved franchise.

In what was considered a routine part of the procedure doctors successfully removed… 1 Christmas ham, 4 egg rolls, 3 Big Macs, 1 apple pie, 1 coconut cream pie, 6 deviled eggs and a partridge in a pear tree.

  15. Ralph Gre Nader says: Mar 14, 2010 7:56 AM

Did they place a band around both stomachs or just the one?

  16. shadowman1433 says: Mar 14, 2010 8:11 AM

That’s gotta be one BIG procedure.

  17. monropoobah says: Mar 14, 2010 8:22 AM

  18. Raven Maniac says: Mar 14, 2010 8:37 AM

You think it would be easy for him to lose weight with all of the sh!t contantly spewing out of his mouth when he talks…

  19. blackglass says: Mar 14, 2010 8:38 AM

I hate the Jets, and Rex, but good for him for trying to lose weight. The last thing any of us want to see is him drop dead of a heart attack on the sideline.

  20. The Jimmy says: Mar 14, 2010 8:51 AM

I often wonder why coaches can’t just lose weight. They have daily access to trainers, nutritionists, and the best work out equipement in the world.
That said I hope he does well. He needed to do something for his own well being.

  21. ampats says: Mar 14, 2010 8:55 AM

Hopefully they also put a lap band around his mouth so it can prevent him from continuing his stupid remarks.

  23. MSWRavens says: Mar 14, 2010 9:22 AM

Will Rex now be placed on your “Turd Watch” as part of his post-surgical follow-up???

    Great Posts Ralph.

  25. FireJerryJones says: Mar 14, 2010 9:28 AM

Sad. He’s got access to trainers, dieticians and resources nobody else has.
Put a little duct tape over his mouth. Should solve all his problems.

  27. droppingloads says: Mar 14, 2010 9:32 AM

The guy works in a building that has the top of line exercise equipment. How about working out in the offseasin, how about not stuffing his face, show a little restraint and diet. It is funny a guy who demands discipline from his team cant do it himself.

  28. hotchick says: Mar 14, 2010 9:49 AM

Two biggest idiots on these comments. The ones who constantly complain about the subject matter, yet constantly return to read and complain about it. If the place sucks, go away.
Then there are those that state things like “why compare the two procedures, one is much less invasive then the other” When in the story mentions that fact.
If you are going to complain about something, at least be somewhat accurate.

Nice job taking the easy way out Rex. God forbid you working hard to accomplish something. Even the Biggest Loser contestants have more motivation than you!

What about Andy Reid? He needs it too!

  34. Filbertkiwi71 says: Mar 14, 2010 10:29 AM

If the procedure works for him, his bellybutton will probably be dragging on the ground from all of the loose skin.
Yes, I know they can do something about that, I was trying to be funny.
On a more serious note, I don’t think that this will be a quick fix. IMO, the vast majority of people who overeat, don’t just overeat because they want to. There has to be more going on there. Too many people in general have lost weight using a variety of methods just to end up putting it back on. It is not necessarily just about discipline.

  35. FootballFanatik says: Mar 14, 2010 10:36 AM

Isn’t it fun making jokes about someone who needs a surgical procedure to improve their quality of life, and their life span? A lot of doctor’s visits and monitoring over a year goes into the planning for this, and I am glad to read that Rex went through with it.
Hope the procedure is a success for you, Rex!

  43. cgower says: Mar 14, 2010 11:40 AM

@ monropoobah: No, it’s not a coincidence that ads next to articles often relate to the articles themselves. They do it on purpose. It’s called “the Internet.”

  44. BuckFigBen says: Mar 14, 2010 11:44 AM

The guy can afford a personal chef and has access to some of the most state of art workout equipment in the country. Yet he can’t motivate himself to do it the right way, The lazy fat bastard gets surgery?
Now he’ll go teach discipline and commitment to his team.

I’ve heard just as many bad stories about lap band surgery as about gastric bypass. I still think the best thing is just to keep your mouth closed.
Come to think of it, that’s probably why Rex chose an alternative procedure …

They are also under an extreme amount of stress. Some people eat when they are under heavy stress.
