Big Show might not be done acquiring quarterbacks

Now that the Browns have resolved a three-year conundrum regarding Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn by choosing none of the above and replacing them with two guys who aren’t necessarily any better, team president Mike Holmgren isn’t necessarily standing pat.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Holmgren said he’ll consider draft a quarterback with the seventh overall selection, and that he’ll consider trading up to get one, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Holmgren also said that he likes Oklahoma Sam Bradford “a lot.”

Though this is the time of the year to roll up pant legs and/or wait for blue eyes to turn brown, Holmgren has been a straight shooter so far.  So we’ll believe he’s interested in drafting a quarterback at the top of round one.

Then again, with Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme as the current options, we’d believe it even if Holmgren didn’t say it.

Holmgren, are you sure you don’t want to trade for Vick? Then you could have 3 mediocre QBs!

  2. ChunkyAssVomit says: Mar 15, 2010 5:26 PM

ANYTHING is better then what we had.
I would give either of these guys the keys to
the offense over D.A. or B.Q.
Quinn never had a fair shot and D.A. had one good year.
I wish them all the best but In Mike We Trust.
[he can't stink any worse then the rest of the sludge we've drug through here].

  6. cizzie4shizzie says: Mar 15, 2010 5:31 PM

There is no franchise QB in this draft. So of course Holmgren would want to draft a bust to go with the other two bums he already has.

Hey, late round QBs (Anderson) can suck just as much as first rounders (Quinn) so why not a couple more? Whatever happened to the one from KY that weighed about three bills? Is he available?

Blindly following the unproven guy…It’s incredible how optimistic Cleveland fans can be after all these years.

  11. SprintPhoneFTW says: Mar 15, 2010 5:37 PM

Seneca Wallace is much better than you think. The kid is a playmaker. He was just never as cerebral as Hasselbeck.
It’s no small coincidence that Holmgren made a b-line for him once the gates opened up.
    Definitely an upgrade for Cleveland.

  12. Good Lord No says: Mar 15, 2010 5:37 PM

  13. trickbunny says: Mar 15, 2010 5:37 PM

I think it’s funny how all the trolls rag on the Browns getting Wallace and Delhomme…
    A) as if there were better, available free agent QBs out there to get (and not completely overpay for).
    and
    B) as if either one of those two scrubs weren’t BETTER than having DA or BQ. They are.
Face it chumps, as sad as Wallace and Delhomme may be, they ARE an upgrade over BQ (bust and always will be) and DA (potential that will never be reached in Cleveland).
Say whatever you want, the total stats for both Wallace and Delhomme blow away the pathetic stats of Anderson and Quinn, even when you take Delhomme’s last two shitty years into account.
And I applaud the Browns for not doing something stupid like overpaying for the on-his-last-legs McNabb or the utterly unproven Kolb.

  14. Brownie says: Mar 15, 2010 5:37 PM

Prediction – Seneca Wallace starts the whole year and has a better passer rating than Hasselback for the 5th straight year, as well as 40%+ of the league’s starting QBs…..not bad for only having to give up a 7th round pick. He and Holmgren will mentor Sam Bradford who will take over the team in either 2011 or 2012, depending on how well Seneca does.
(Keep in mind, I was the first person on this site to predict Seneca would be traded to the Browns….just sayin’)

  15. Chapnasty2 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:38 PM

Can we please for the love of god stop calling him “The Big Show”? I don’t even know where it came from but this website is the only place I have seen it and it isn’t accurate and sounds comlpetely dumb.

  16. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 15, 2010 5:39 PM

I don’t know. St. Louis, Washington and Seattle all have their eyes on QBs. They’d have to trade places with St. Louis in order to make sure they got the pick. That’s going to cost a lot.

  17. netdawg says: Mar 15, 2010 5:39 PM

they better NOT be done!!! Delhomme and Wallace is a combo that has ZERO long term potential at all.
A QB in the draft isn’t the story, the story is only if the Browns stay pat at #7 and take one or if they trade up higher than #7 to get one… it’s inevitable that they DO get one in those three days though

  18. TheRedBengal says: Mar 15, 2010 5:39 PM

With all the draft picks the walrus has, he’s probably considering trading up for Bradford. But that won’t happen with the Lambs wanting Bradford. So, the walrus better draft real well, and not pick guys like Veikune or Robinskie

  19. Browns314 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:42 PM

He also said he would consider lots of other options at number 7.

just sayin’ trade big baby and our #1 and a couple 3′s to the lambs…take bradford and run, draft all defense with the rest. How much fun is that!

  26. jimmy_b says: Mar 15, 2010 5:56 PM

I can understand getting rid of Anderson and Quinn. But I don’t get signing Delhomme. Maybe he will be the comeback player of year, I hope so.
My guess is the Browns QB conundrum has remained unchanged – unless they trade up and get Sam Bradford.

  27. shaslers says: Mar 15, 2010 5:56 PM

  28. Citizen Strange says: Mar 15, 2010 5:57 PM

This is a little off topic but in the early 90s when the first “Melrose Place” was on my wife (at the time) used to like to watch it and I would watch the opening credits with her just so I could make up “funny” middle names for the actors in the cast.
My favorites were Grant “No” Show and Doug “Idiot” Savant.

  29. Pigskin09 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:58 PM

I think it was too early to give up on Quinn. I would have kept him and Delhomme to work with, and try and draft another QB or something… but to go with only S. Wallace, and Jake… hmmm not sure about that… I mean, I’d go with Quinn and Jake over Wallace and Jake… Wallace has proved over and over he is not an NFL QB

  30. brownsfn says: Mar 15, 2010 5:58 PM

que blue eyed devil… with his racist comments about the conspiracy of having 2 white qb’s rather than picking up vick *eyes roll*

  31. craigja says: Mar 15, 2010 6:03 PM

He’ll draft a QB in round 2 or 3. Holmgren has never drafted a QB in round 1, ever. Pike, McCoy, someone. The drafted QB will ride 3rd on the QB list and learn.
The Browns are MAYBE a 7 win team next year and 8 the year after. Delhomme can run this for 2 years. Remember, the Browns are building a football organization, (finally) not just a football team.
I remember the early Steelers teams, horrible. Remember how a trip to New England meant a win for sure. Those two organization built foundations that are bigger than any one player or coach. That’s what Mike Holmgren is attempting to do. Give him time.
It took a long time for this team to become what it is, it’s not going to change overnight. The good news is the fans just want to competitive. Nobody in Cleveland is asking for more than that right now.
    In Holmgren we trust….

  32. Drat says: Mar 15, 2010 6:05 PM

Seneca Wallace will be better than fine. He will be good. Not superduper great. But really good. (those are technical scouting terms.)

  33. Crabcake says: Mar 15, 2010 6:10 PM

    Make an offer for Troy!

  34. Laxer37 says: Mar 15, 2010 6:12 PM

Like clockwork – the calls for Troy Smith.
Typical Browns fan, a third string NFL QB is the answer just because he played for the Buckeyes.

  35. JaggedMark says: Mar 15, 2010 6:14 PM

Mike, you really are the King of Snark. I mean you really are. Louis Black isn’t half as snarky as you.
Of course, Holmgren will consider drafting a quarterback. He’ll consider every position. In the 7th spot, everyone would.
However, I don’t believe he’ll be trading up from the 7th spot, for anyone.
Although, the Browns have accumulated enough draft picks for 2010 to do whatever the hell they want to do, and then some.

  36. BRUTUS9448 says: Mar 15, 2010 6:27 PM

I think seneca wallace is not a bad QB. He’ll probably be the starter next year.

  37. mwcarolina says: Mar 15, 2010 6:31 PM

unless they trade up for Bradford (which i can NOT see happening), the Browns will either draft Clausen (if he falls) or use a 2nd rounder on McCoy or wait a year and get Mallet.

  39. Good Lord No says: Mar 15, 2010 6:39 PM

Troy Smith has a HUGE heart and is a baller. He never had a fair shot in Baltimore and would be an automatic fan favorite in Cleveland. Do I like him because he was a Buckeye? Of course, but he’s also from Cleveland and has done some pretty good work w/at least one of the Browns.

  40. 86postpattern says: Mar 15, 2010 6:45 PM

DO NOT move up to draft a qb. There’ll be options later on. The Browns have 12 picks and need help in too many other places. Because of the possibility of a lockout next year this daft is loaded.

  41. JP says: Mar 15, 2010 6:46 PM

Given that they are in the midst of a major rebuilding, it would be crazy for the Browns to give up what they would have to give up to move up high enough to pick Bradford. And if the Rams decide to take Bradford at #1, then there is probably no package of picks they could put together to get Bradford.

  42. cizzie4shizzie says: Mar 15, 2010 6:55 PM

The Browns were going to go after Vick, but they were afaid he was going to murder the dog pound!

  43. bigtrav425 says: Mar 15, 2010 6:56 PM

NO WAY they draft a QB…we need to many other things especially Defense! and especially after last yrs debacle of a draft and missin out on all those Defensive players.we will not draft a QB with our first pick….maybe one of our 3rds but i wouldnt waste that one either

  44. Slow Joe says: Mar 15, 2010 6:57 PM

Mark this down: At the number three pick, the Bucs will wait to see if Suh somehow falls to them. If he doesn’t, the Bucs will trade the pick to the Cleveland Holmgrens, picking up their number seven pick and a second rounder (or something of value).

  45. Dixon29 says: Mar 15, 2010 7:14 PM

First of all, Troy Smith sucks.
Actually, that is really all I want to say, other then, he isn’t coming to Cleveland(thank God).

  46. orangeandbrown85 says: Mar 15, 2010 7:26 PM

Hey trickbunny- BINGO, dude! It was definitely time to m0ve on and despite what other guys are saying, both Delhome and Wallace bring things to the team- familiarity with the West Coast and Holmgen’s system (Wallace) and veteran, winning leadership (Delhome, despite his recent issues). Delhome is a good pick to mentor and teach a rookie QB, and I’m sure they’ll draft one this year, whether a first rounder or mid-round guy. I’d like to see us grab a couple of solid defenders in the first 2 rounds and find a QB in the 3rd, if possible.

  47. clevelandmetal13 says: Mar 15, 2010 7:28 PM

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As big as a Browns fan that I have always been and always will be, I think it’s amazingly retarded of all the lame asses on here calling for Troy Smith?
You guys hated to see Quinn go, saying that he didn’t get a fair shake, blah blah blah… but you think Troy Smoth will be the answer?!?!?!?
Why, because he has a crapload more experience in the league then BQ has? Think before you speak homers!
Delhomme and/ or Wallace will be competant until Holms and Heckert find their guy.
you would honestly think in Cleveland right now that we just traded Peyton Manning with the way everyone is going on. Amazing. At least we picked up a guy in Delhomme that’s done something in this league before.
This team sucked ass last year. WTF do Browns fans want, the same team every year hoping that one day it will all come together?
    Get a clue kiddies.

  48. ppdoc13 says: Mar 15, 2010 7:31 PM

For all of you Clown fans that want Troy Smith, we would love you to give a 5th round pick for him. He sucks. He has a strong but inaccurate arm. He is a clubhouse cancer that has a distorted self value.
And for the delude fan Craigja who thinks that the Clowns are a 7 or 8 win team, I would really like some of whatever it is that he is smoking.

  49. paranoidandroid says: Mar 15, 2010 7:33 PM

The best strategy for a team that needs help in all areas is to simply take the best player available with their pick. That is exactly what they should do.

Well, lets just go ahead and print this out and put it right up on the fridge then. on a site where countless people, including the authors, make wild ass guesses as far as to what will happen in the future, you where able to guess right. Maybe you should quit your day job and just buy that 1 powerball ticket that will make you a millionaire, tell you what, you tell me the winning numbers, and ill split it with you.
that would be like predicting that mangini would have brought in some guys from the jets when he went to the browns (he did) or that rex ryan would have brought some guys from balitmore (he did) or that chilly would bring some guys from philly (he did) of that wade would bring some guys from san diego (he did) or that pretty much any person moving from one team to another that is in contact frequently with the players, would bring someone along that he thought was a good idea. WHAT A F-ING GENIUS!!!

ANYTHING is possible, ask the saints

  67. Dawgpound2009 says: Mar 15, 2010 11:59 PM

Bradford will go to the Crams #1 and Claussen @ 4 to washington. Eric Berry would be a nice pick even if they have to move up a spot or two to take him . I would much rather have Berry than Haden. Knowing the Browns, they will trade down rather than up. Taylor Mays would be a good choice trading down.
I wouldn’t give you a steaming pile of deer $#@+ for Colt Mccoy or Tim Tebow either. Pike, Skelton or Brown would make sense later on in the draft.

  68. Subpar says: Mar 16, 2010 9:59 AM

@Dawgpound2009 – I couldn’t agree more. I like Sneed later in the draft too. Also even if Claussen is there I don’t want him at 7. Berry is my favorite in the draft for the Browns.
For people calling for Troy Smith, seriously what is the deal here? Browns fans will give NO chance to an unproven QB. Look at Quinn and how quickly people were calling for pulling the plug. Now look at Aikmen and Peytom Manning’s first few seasons. Noone was calling for their jobs because they knew they had to give them time to develop. Our fans arent willing to do that. Our option is always going to be proven QB’s that can win now because as 100% into it all of our fans are. Only about 50% of them use reason when looking at the team.
