Jets, Giants resolve turf battle over their new turf

To cap a day that began with news of a coin-flip that reportedly left Jets owner Woody Johnson outraged, the NFL has resolved the problem of two teams sharing a new stadium, with each wanting to be the first to play a regular-season game there.

According to various members of the New York media, the Giants will host a game on a Sunday, and the Jets will host a Monday night game that same weekend.

It doesn’t mean that the games will be played in Week One.  There’s a chance that the new venue will be dark during kickoff weekend, with the Giants and the Jets each playing on the road.  Then, the opening of the stadium would be one of the highlights of Week Two, with the Jets hosting the Monday nigh game that concludes the second slate of games.

The Jets also will open the preseason at the new stadium.

Meanwhile, look for the prime-time games to be played in Week One and the Thanksgiving games to be announced next week, in conjunction with the league meetings in Orlando.

UPDATE:  Some of the reports indicate that the two-day christening will indeed occur in Week One.

SECOND UPDATE:  Yep, it’s Week One.

Why don’t they just play each other?

  2. ttommytom says: Mar 15, 2010 5:01 PM

Jets fans are usually drunk . They won’t know it is the 2nd game if you don’t tell them.

  3. DieHardSkinsFan21 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:03 PM

Why didn’t they just settle it by record of the final season in the Meadowlands? I love that both the cowgurls and the giants lost their last games in their old stadium. Hopefully the giants will also lose their opening game in their new stadium.

  4. footballrulz says: Mar 15, 2010 5:06 PM

Why don’t they just let ‘em play each other. How will they handle that–surely at some point they will meet in the regular seadon. Who gets to be the home team?

  5. cizzie4shizzie says: Mar 15, 2010 5:09 PM

To be techinal ttommytom, the Jets got the first game in the preseason douchebag.

  6. hufcane says: Mar 15, 2010 5:10 PM

or they can just settle with which team won more super bowls–sorry jets fan u are in a football giants town–just face it u r a second class citizen–like the beaner trying to border jump

  7. laison says: Mar 15, 2010 5:12 PM

Wasn’t the other field a Giants field?
That really sucks if you are a JET fan. What they should have done is switched. Whoever had home field on the last field the other team gets it this time.
What was it “A TWO SIDED COIN”?

  8. dboom92 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:12 PM

“Daddy of the Year” should’ve built his own stadium when he had the chance….

  9. nyjshane88 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:13 PM

I suggested this solution back on the 1st article on this topic, maybe someone from the league office reads this stuff lol. As a Jets fan I’m very happy with this decision, no hard feelings, I think both sides are cool with this. I wish the Giants well. Now that this little misunderstanding is over, we can go back to hating NE and MIA and you guys can go back to hating Philly and Dallas lol. Is it September yet?

  10. madsqgrdn says: Mar 15, 2010 5:14 PM

Awesome!!! I’d much rather have the Monday night game. Man we are going to be loud!!!you know that means patriots! It makes sense because giant fans are way too old and quiet for Monday night games.

  11. dontbhatin01 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:14 PM

It would be cool if they could play each other.

  12. Politely Stoned says: Mar 15, 2010 5:15 PM

Very excited to see what gets released for week one and Thanksgiving next week.
I read that it was Patriots turn out all of the Lions home opponents to play on Thanksigiving, we’ll see if that is the case. I’m guessing we’ll get:
Minnesota at New Orleans (Thursday 9/9)
Eagles at Giants (9/12) early game
Seattle at San Francisco (9/12) late game
    Ravens at Jets (9/19)
No idea about Week One Sunday late game.

  13. habibfromnewdehli says: Mar 15, 2010 5:15 PM

Of course this will occur in Week 1.
But way to “keep us guessing” on your super secret schedule making, NFL!
I really have no idea that the Vikings are opening at the Saints, or that the Cowboys and Lions will continue to get their stupid Thanksgiving games even though it would be much more beneficial to everyone to switch it up. Even those Detroit fans would probably enjoy a year that they can sit at home instead of going to the games.

  14. jimicos says: Mar 15, 2010 5:21 PM

The Jets don’t want the Giants’ sloppy seconds, but if it’s hastily-prepared sloppy seconds that’s fine?

Why don’t they just play each other?
    ……………………………………………
perhaps because the AFC East doesnt play the NFC East till 2011?

  16. funi says: Mar 15, 2010 5:26 PM

I guess that Jaworski request of Pitt at Balt as 1st MNF game won’t happen. Dallas at NYG and Pats at Jets looks like the matchups.

  17. Beef_It says: Mar 15, 2010 5:28 PM

Will the Jets sell beer for MNF?

  18. troke says: Mar 15, 2010 5:28 PM

    @ DAAAA BEARS
Not a bad idea but the Giants are scheduled to play the AFC South and the Jets play the NFC North. Had they started construction a year later that would have worked perfectly as the NFC East plays the AFC East in 2011, assuming there is no lockout and the league continues the rotational schedule they’ve used since 2002.
A preseason bout is possible however.

  19. SATAN567 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:28 PM

    @ DAAAA BEARS:
Given that you are from Chicago, or are at least a fan of the jackassy Bears franchise, I understand why you would ask such a stupid question. In case you haven’t noticed over the years, the NFL has always had very strict scheduling practices. The schedules are determined far in advance, rotating from division to division in both conferences and also playing the in conference teams that finished in the same position in their respective divisions. I further understand that since you are clearly retarded (otherwise you could not possibly cheer for the Bears), you may not understand what I just said.

  20. cizzie4shizzie says: Mar 15, 2010 5:35 PM

    GO LIONS! Ooops wrong article

  21. nyjshane88 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:40 PM

I’d say the Pats are the most likely opponent for the Jets. But dont totally rule out the Ravens with all the connections there. The dark horse is the Vikings. The Jets host them this year, you’ve got the whole Favre thing, LT coming to NY over Minny. The NFL jumps at any chance to get Favre in primetime so that could be the team.

  22. cizzie4shizzie says: Mar 15, 2010 5:42 PM

G-men lose to the Redskins week one, while the Jets destroy Vikings

want the other nfc east teams down in the gutter where you’ve been for the last 25 years?

  25. dcowboy7 says: Mar 15, 2010 5:55 PM

    To politely stoned:
The giants have to play 4:15 because cbs has the US open tennis at 4:00 so they have to show a game in NY at 1:00 & they couldnt if the giants are home assuming giants are on fox.
    Done people know this stuff.

  26. bspurloc says: Mar 15, 2010 5:59 PM

  27. downwithdansnyder says: Mar 15, 2010 5:59 PM

why not let them play each other and raffle between the two teams season ticket holders for the seats. flip a coin for home/visitor locker room. Huh…

Do Giants fans realize that if the Jets didn’t pay for HALF of the new stadium. The Giants wouldn’t be there.
The Jets were set to build on the West Side but same piece of shit that’s ruining the rebuilding at ground zero had his giant nose poked in the rail yards.
But don’t let the truth get in the way of Giants fans pissing all over themselves about the status of Jets fans financially or socially.

  35. Bigbluefan says: Mar 15, 2010 6:39 PM

Thanks to the NFL for picking the better team to open the place up on a Sunday
As the giants are the better team and always have been.
To Cizzie you must be a redskin fan
And to no koolaid it was a very smart to share as NY and NJ have the highests labor costs and land cost in the country.
The place is used for Football so to share it is a good business idea.
As each team only plays 8 home game in season that means there are 16 regular season games 4 preseason and one or two playoff games.
1.5 Billion for a place to have 20 to 25 games a year that means it is empty for 340 days a year.
If only one team played it would be dark for 350 + days a year.
While no fan of the jets I do understand the logic behind the sharing.
The 49ers and the Raiders should do the same thing so they can get new digs with out raping the tax payers.
The place was built on State Land but the place was paid for by the Giants and the Jets yes the state made road improvemnets but that will pay for it self in tolls and taxes.

  36. Deception says: Mar 15, 2010 6:42 PM

    @downwithdansnyder
They each have their own personal dressing rooms, and then their is extra for a true away team dressing rooms for other teams.
Almost as dumb as the bear guy
And bigblue fan, they do play each other every 4 years, switch home and away, so in 2007 Giants were designated home, in 2011, Jets will be designated home and their season ticket holders will get their seats and regular Giants season ticket holders will have to buy other tickets, just as if for example they traveled to buffalo to see the giants play

  37. ozu says: Mar 15, 2010 6:45 PM

Makes sense. Most Giants season ticket holders will be in bed by the time MNF starts. Or having their nurse change their diapers.

  38. Mike Daly says: Mar 15, 2010 6:51 PM

My prediction of this opening weekend at the new Giants Stadium -
    Cowboys @ Giants Sunday
    Patriots @ Jets Monday

  39. Mike Daly says: Mar 15, 2010 6:52 PM

“Why don’t they just play each other?” Because they’re not scheduled to play each other until 2011 – when the NFC East faces the AFC East.

  40. Bob S. says: Mar 15, 2010 6:55 PM

look at this ripoff – seat licenses are for sale now
the only seats even reasonable are $1000 seat licence for those sidelines seats in the 300s sideline terrace level at $95 – and looks like only a small percentage of the stadium. endzone terrace is same $1,000 seat license and ten bucks cheaper at $85 per game. i wouldn’t pay $85 to sit in the 3rd deck endzone let alone pay them a G-NOTE more for the privilege to do so.
the rest either you’re a company or bank the people bailed out thru the crooks in washington or you are in the elite upper class and you just like watching these lowly christians vs. the lions
just like attending the roman colisseum was only for the upper class.
mara and tisch, both these silver spooned sons, are common slime of the earth!

What kind of job allows you to post on football message boards all day? Can’t be anything important.

  42. funi says: Mar 15, 2010 7:06 PM

Why don’t Jet and Giant fans worry about who plays the 1st PLAYOFF game at the new stadium! Two years from now, noboby will care who played in the first game! Typical New York morons! As for this post:

You mean the Cards and whiners won’t play in the 1st game of the season for 5 years in a row? Cardinal should open at home vs Rams and retire Warners number then.
